Edited by: Dark Shikari on 01/11/2004 01:05:42 You have a group of pirates camping a gate, and they get quite a haul--185 ships (this is the gate in aunehen by AAS today--good job btw, you must have made a lot of cash). But how much loot does one get? The pirates are getting almost nothing in terms of loot unless they're lucky enough to catch someone with a named module that actually dropped or some idiot hauling megacyte through low sec space in an indy or cruiser/frig without dual MWD. So while these victims are losing billions upon billions of ISK (no, insurance doesn't nearly cover the full cost as insurance itself costs a crapload), while the pirates are getting scraps.
Now the question is, is this a good or a bad thing? I want an honest discussion here.
For the pirates, it sucks. You guys are getting hardly anything for what you do--and the biggest sacrifice that the most successful (well, most kills) pirates are making (lowsec pirates, see AAS above)... is your sec status. No more high sec traveling, at all.
Pirates have huge disadvantages--they are almost universally hated and any huge blockade is bound to stir up some pirate hunters. But they still get surprisingly little compared to what their victims lose.
Now lets say CCP made it so that ships dropped minerals or the like when they are killed (or say scrap metal that can be refined, maybe 1/5 of the ship's value). This would mean that killing would be much more profitable.
But could it backfire? If CCP made pirating considerably more profitable like perhaps the above, piracy would spread. And it would spread so much that people would consider 0.1-0.4 completely unsafe. And thus most of the players would carebear back to 0.5+, and pirates would again get very little.
I really don't know about this... but what do all of you think?
(btw, this is not an alt--I am coming back after 4 months without EVE and decided to make a new char :P ) -- The best description of alliances, ever:

Pirating isn't meant to be very profitable. There are many many other reasons why people turn pirate and stay like it..
---- My alt-mobile was a victim of Grand Theft Auto. Fear the vegetable. |

What is sadder about the Aunenen camp last night was that out of the 90+ people in Nonni, only 10 people where willing to take the fight to the pirates. However as we only managed to get two BS pilots against the pirates 6+ it was called off.
Carebears of Nonni hang your heads in shame. If CONCORD ever abandons the area I am sure two pirate BS could marude the area unchallenged. --------------------------------------------------

Well as a pirate, I don't usually make huge amounts of isk, with the occasional hauler snag that hoards 10BS worth of zydrine and megacyte. Sometimes bluprints. But more often where we make some good money is hacking apart battleships and picking up a good chunk of rare mods. Especially in empire since alot of pilots in travel equipped BS will engage you after you pick the fight and sentries are hitting ya.
Some pirates are indepently wealthy from prior carebearing adventures. But most pirates are not rich at all, we live and die by insurance. We keep just as many ships as we need and manage our money wisely. But all in all we do it cause we love it.

Piracy is what u make it to be, if u wanna make money as a pirate it aint that hard, u just have to use your brain.
