Seems to me that the fact that someone can completely destroy a character of, say a year or more, bringing them down to 2 weeks of skill points is pretty lame. Is it just designed to exploit user error? the cost is negligible. I really don't see a point. I know new eden is harsh but sheesh. you mean you guys actually got together and thought well, when someone dies they should:
lose their ship.. okay lose their implants.. okay Return to starting station.. okay oh i know! let's make them pay a few isk and if they forget, they lose EVERYTHING!.. yeah totally! but but.. what about a player who has been a customer for 4 years?..
this has not been a problem for me.. yet. it is really easy to upgrade y'r clone, so easy that it almost seems POINTLESS hmmm?
If someone had a bad day and took a 10mil sp un-upgraded character out after being shot down and then gets shot again and podded, how likely are they to pay next month's subscription? A bit less likely i'd say.
has anyone actually destroyed their toon this way?

I know quite a few who did that. Most are still there. And those who don't would have quit for another reason.
Plenty of ppl play this game _because_ of the provided consequenses for bad moves. There is no reason to make the game even more boring.

That's the reason we play this game: it hurts to be stupid.
In every other game out there death means nothing. It should, for God's sake, YOU JUST GOT KILLED! Yet, we see death as a minor inconvenience... and it should hurt.
At least in EVE it hurts a little. ---

If someone has no clone at all they only lose something like a couple hundred thousand SP. To bring a character with millions of SP down to nothing would take weeks.

OP doesn't have a clue about what happens if your clone isn't upgraded. For example, a 50 mill SP pilot in a 900k SP clone when podded loses 50% SP from the skill where he has the most SP in. As in 1 mill and change SP from BS V and similar. You don't lose 50 mill SP just because you're a bit forgetful but it does hurt. The 'Fendahlian Collective' strikes again |

You lose maximum 50% of your highest trained skill or 10% of your SP if lower.
Op is wrong. Like most moaners basic research is too much bother for them.

To be fair to you:
1. If your a titan pilot or similar it still hurts.
2. It used to be more lost but it was changed.

Last I checked if your SP is higher than the clone you lose 5% of the difference between your SP and the SP covered by the clone, taken from the skill with the most SP in it, with a maximum of 50% of that skill's SP.

To be fair, I'm not sure where you would have researched this. I've been VERY careful against just that sort of thing, but it is good to know that you can't lose EVERYTHING just cuz you were momentarily stupid.

Just in case someone didn't answer this question: When you die with an non-upgraded clone you do not lose millions upon millions of skillpoints, you simply lose a level 5 skill (which one is random).
Besides, if you have enough skillpoints so that clones actually start costing something you should be experienced enough to A) stop getting podded or B) make back the money in a matter of minutes.
Problem solved.

When you die in a clone with less SP capacity than your current skill points, you don't lose everything. It's just 5% of the difference taken from the skill with highest total SP, up to a max of 50% of that skill.

In fairness, there is a situation where the OP is correct.
If a high SP character repeatedly gets podded, without a clone, they could theoretically be reduced down to about that point in SP.
Granted why the person kept clicking the 'undock' button after the 100th podding is another issue entirely...

I had fun doing that to a macro miner.
I killed his ship and pod then used my location agent to see where his clone was at. Sure enough, the macro program kept undocking him. I kept killing him till I got tired of it.

Yeah, he'd "ONLY" need to die about 50-100 times without upgrading his clone a single time.

I love to read people claim this. You must have been told someone else did it and now you thought you would claim you did it.
However, when you try to undock after being podded you get a popup asking you which ship to use. Since there is no way in hell anyone would write into their macro to pick a ship from the list and you won't undock till you do..... You sir are a liar

Funny thing is, unless my memory is being an arse, if i remember rightly "Way back when" after being podded you were automatically in a POD. And back before there was a warning popup for ABSOLUTELY FRICKIN EVERYTHING, you could undock straight after being podded (Session change timer notwithstanding) _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Personally i think you should just have to pay for being cloned. IE .. you dont have clone upgrades, just a cost associated with dieing based on your current SP. That way you'll never lose SP, and you cant forget to upgrade. I guess if you went into negative isk then you could lose sp instead.
This just seems a much more streamlined method of dealing with death and clone spawning to me.

Your idea is terribad. In 0.0 there are these strange things called "Outposts"... I believe certain organizations called "Alliances" wage wars over these outposts. Now, these outposts provide certain services to its owners and their allies and one of these services is called "cloning". It is possible to shoot and thus disable this service thereby preventing your enemy from upgrading their clones.
So what you call "pointless" (without actually knowing anything about game mechanics) is actually an important feature of this game.
Or in short: no, just no.
