"McDonald's Corp (MCD.N) said on Monday it would shutter its business in Iceland in the wake of the country's financial crisis, saying the economy and other challenges made doing business there financially impossible.
The world's largest fast-food company said all three of its restaurants in Iceland, operated by franchisee Jon Ogmundsson, would close at midnight on Oct. 31.
"The unique operational complexity of doing business in Iceland combined with the very challenging economic climate in the country makes it financially prohibitive to continue the business," McDonald's Europe said in a statement.
"This complex set of challenges means we have no plans to seek a new partner in Iceland," the company said."
And a city cry's out in horror as fast food quickly runs away!

Who do they think they are, dictating dietary restrictions to an entire country?
Iceland is OUR icebox, supposedly where we can freely decided not only what we want to eat but also how we eat it.
If they hadn't been busy pouring all of the money we spent into McDonalds frachises in other countries think of how the situation would be different... we should demand a refund!!!
Thanks McDonalds for ruining the open icebox concept. pffttt.

Iceland has what 300k residents?
What is alrming though is ..if Mcdonalds cant make a profit in Iceland, who can? I can understand why they are leaving though...it's hard to do business in a terrorist law siezed banking system.

McDonald's closed several restaurants in northern Sweden a few years back. Now there is only one left. They just can't compete with the local chains for some reason.

As did the Icelanders (well, most/many of them). The thing you have to remember is that Iceland pretty much consists of Reykavik and nothing else. Their second biggest city has a grand total of 17000 citizens. Reykavik and surrounding areas has 200k of icelands total population of 300k. I'm guessing that all McDonalds were located within the city of Reykavik itself.
Also. When McDonalds leaves Reykavik will still have TGI fridays, Burger King, KFC, Ruby Tuesday and Domino's (plus the local/non-franchised).
Hint: This is a barely concealed McDonalds announcement stating "We couldn't compete because we suck". ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

Which ones are those? Culverhouse Cross? I know Queen Street has a Starbucks at either end, and Subway have quite a few premises around Roath and Cathays.

While agreeing with the idea that this is no bad thing I think it shows just how useless the bosses of big compainies are.
So currently there is a little problem with the Icelandic exchange rate that makes it a bit hard to operate in Iceland just now. So instead of dealing with this problem, all the bosses at McDonnies can think of is cut and run. Yep, boys, that is really gonna grow your company and pay your pensions in the future.

I read on the BBC story that they were shipping in the food from Germany, and for a kilo of onions it costs the price of a good bottle of whiskey. No doubt sourcing the food locally is not possible.

Wow,
but that problem would go away if there was enough demand for the shipments.
if i was in iceland i would seriously consider starting up my own fast-food franchise sourcing local ingredients. you could even use 'support the local economy' as a marketing campaign, perhaps even get some government support. you would do quite well methinks.
on a side note, no wonder 'ol murdoch' hates the BBC, they are feeding us real information! the shear audacity!
sorry for not bothering to find a better link, but the objectivity should speak for itself. and as an australian, i would definatly prefer to receive knowledge from the BBC, than any of murdoch's publications.
//edit just to clarify, murdock reckons...
Quote: "The expansion of state-sponsored journalism is a threat to the plurality and independence of news provision,"
i think he ment to say...
Quote: "The existance of state-sponsored journalism is a threat to the monopoly and corperatisation of news provision,"
yes, he is scared that the ongoing push to privatise government institutions has been halted by the economic downturn.
as they say, "you dig your own grave".

Yeah, Murdoch wants you to pay for every scrap of news you are given. If there is one thing I pay the TV License for, it's for keeping the BBC News free for everyone. The News should be free for everyone to see, and preferably unbiased.
If Murdoch wants to charge for Fair and Balanced journalism, so be it, but don't call it either news or the truth.

well i updated and spelled it out for those who are unfamilier with the topic
Originally by: Xen Gin If Murdoch wants to charge for Fair and Balanced journalism, so be it, but don't call it either news or the truth.
sorry, but this statement bothers me.
i see what you're saying, but it could have been said without contradicting "fair and balanced" with "news or truth". i can read between what your saying, but there are younglings out there which might be confused.
to further clarify, most people who succeed in the capitalistic environment are total douches.
douche: noun: not necessarily stupid, but either socially ******ed, or self-worshiping.
