Many agents give me 5 jumps away missions (that's 10 with the way back) which means hours sitting in front of the comp doing nothing. Is there any wat to avoid that ? I'm learning MWD at the moment but won't get it for days...

Courier agents can be a chore if you do not like to travel. And if you join a player corp that is at war with people; being afk during long trips is a sure means to get pod killed.
If you like working for agents but would rather not travel so much I suggest finding a killjob agent -- most npc corps have them via their Internal Security or Public Relations divisions. Most of their killjobs take place in the same system as the agent or are at most 1-2 jumps out and back again.
Stick to level one agents until you get the hang of pve/rat killing and I would suggest using Calderi ships as you can missile kite with them and kill the rats with ease out of their weapons' range. A kestrel is an excellent overall agent runner/rat killer esp when you use kinetic misiles and get that added damage bonus.
Hope that helps.
Peace.

Also be sure to check your auto-pilot settings.
Goto the map screen, goto the options, goto auto-pilot and check for fastest route. When in empire if you are not in a player corp at war with other player corps there is no need to worry about a safest route. It's quite likely you are set to safest travel, which can more than double your travel time. However, if for some reason your route does do to systems with a security rating below .4 or so; it is possible there will be rats camping the gates, so be careful.
Just a thought.
Peace.

You should also look for higher quality agents. They have shorter travel times to their missions. Mine gives zero to 2 jumps for kill missions at Q20. Also, as your standing rises with the agent, your missions will get shorter.

Courier missions suck unless you find a run that lets you run 3-4 missions at a time. Do kill missions instead, theyre more fun. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

Some players that routinely run courier missions make it a point to create IBMs (Instant BookMarks) for all the stations their agents send them too. This shortens traveltime, but requires you to pay a little attention (like mining or something similar).
With IBMs, you should look for a station that has 3 or 4 agents giving courier missions and get missions from all of them at once. You should be able to complete them all within bonus time.
This is a rewarding way to run courier missions, but I admit, there's still a lot less excitement than in combat missions. Courier missions are for EVE players that do other EVE stuff on the side, like write websites, prowl the forums, or talk with corp members.
Greetings, Grismar.

Yep, you really need a good book or something to get the most out of courier runs. =)

Agents like to do their best to completely stitch you up. You will go to an agent fully prepared to do kill missions and they will sometimes give you several courier missions in a row. You will go to an agent that gives courier missions in a nice fast frigate, not really set up for combat and what do you get? Kill missions, obviously ;) It can actually be reasonably good fun getting the odd kill mission when you're prepared to do a courier mission. Even the easiest kill mission becomes a challenge in a seriously gimped ship. It can take a fair amount of time to kill rats with only one missile launcher and no guns though...
Travelling can be a pain in Eve and quite off-putting. Once your navigation skills are quite good, travelling in a frigate is not quite so much of a chore. On the other hand, if you think travelling is long-winded now, wait until you get into a battleship...I use the travelling time to chat with corp mates, read people's bios, look at the other ships, count all that ISK in my wallet, take in the scenery, study the map and see if any big battles have taken place recently, etc. Sometimes, when I just need to get somewhere it's just plain frustrating. Other times, I appreciate that you can relax with the game and it doesn't demand your full attention.
Travel becomes a lot more interesting when you travel through low sec space - you should have local open and be actively checking people to see if they might be hostile. Running a blockade can really liven up an otherwise dull journey. It is even more interesting when your corp is at war - all space is unsafe! All those boring journeys you take for granted suddenly become quite intense...
