Just a few general points about being a good forum citizen. If you read this and say none of that applies to me, chances are it does.
Reading comprehension - How so many of you fail this point really boggles the mind. A poster is trying to make a point or whine and you craft a long deliberate response that is completely off base. If you are going to give some snooty response to someone please carefully read what they wrote. Nothing makes me hate you more than having to engage my own reading comprehension realizing that your post, written so seriously and sincerely, had nothingthe**** to do with what anyone is talking about. If you are posting to be silly or derail then by all means charge blindly onward.
Analogies - Chances are you that if you using one to reinforce your point, you are failing. Not that it isn't valid to use one, but how often do you read one that brings clarity to an issue (not counting your own)? Exactly. Statistically speaking you are probably failing. "It's like if you go to the store and ask them for change and all they want to do is sell you something and not make change but you really don't want to buy a popscicle for your grandma and that is why we need to change gate guns. Yes. Chances are your analogy is that dumb.
Idioms - Eve idioms... funny right? Too bad they are used so haphazardly. Someone asks "How do I disband my huge alliance?" and your answer is "cool story brah". Seriously. If you have nothing else to say don't just spin the wheel. Take a deep breath and think about it. Treat your five minutes like they are precious.
Sarcasm - I should never have to say "/sarcasm", "begin sarcasm here", "10 go sarcasm", whatever. Nothing makes me crazier than when people do not get sarcasm. I am not sure how to fix this one unless CCP makes me a forum admin and I can just ban people for not understanding what is clearly sarcasm. Perhaps as a community we should point out examples and shame the offenders into a corner? Nothing can ruin my forum day worse than someone whose pants crack is coming out of their noseholes.
Here's to good posting!

No; genuine sarcasm requires a certain degree of insult and/or rude language. Comparing OP to sarcasm is like if you go to the store and ask them for change and all they want to do is sell you something and not make change but you really don't want to buy a popscicle for your grandma and that is why it's not sarcasm.

This is just like the story of the Grasshopper and the Octopus...
All summer long the Grasshopper gathers acorns for winter while the Octopus mooches off his girlfriend, but then winter comes and the Grasshopper dies and the Octopus eats all his acorns... also he gets a racecar...
Is any of this getting through to you?
Now go... go gather your nuts you nagging Grasshopper. |

Thank you Tom for the excellent post! I have to agree with you on all of this. I would have to say that you and me are probably the only 2 good posters in EVE! Which reminds me of a story:
"About 3 months ago I was posting a new topic and the replies were so off topic it made my head spin. Here I am in the General Discussion being fussed at because my post was not "related to EVE". It continues to baffle me how people can't see the correlation between EVE, socks, and waffles."
It is so frustrating to see so many people with closed minds. Like they say, "When in Rome."
Well, Tom I've got your back and if there are any more posters out there that can't see that 90% of EVE posters are <insert_sarcasm "awesome" end_sarcasm> then I suggest you leave.
In closing, I would like to say that I agree with Tom that Suicide Ninja Salvaging Freighters are a good idea due to the shortage of baskets and vinegar in game.

Deep down many of you know I am right. Don't be afraid of your peers disapproval just because you support more thoughtful posting. There is no need to show off for them. In fact, you can be a role model for them. |

Thank you. I'm finally not the only one who realizes that 90% of forum posters (anywhere, not just in Eve) have absolutely no reading comprehension. I don't know how many times I've been the only one after 10 attempts at answering a question to be the only one that actually answered the question.
Sometimes, I think people totally disregard the actual question on purpose and post something relative to the topic, but that may be obscure information, but not really an answer to the actual question, just to look smart.
Here's an example of a post I made on lifehacker.com and how someone responded to it:
Originally by: me So is this Windows7 thing an upgrade or a full install?
The website makes it sound like a full install. They even have a FAQ that explains what needs to be done if you get their product and have Windows XP meaning the only way to accomplish this is if it was a full install. If it was simply an upgrade disc, this wouldn't be an option, yet they make it an option.
Some clear cut clarification on what exactly we would be getting would be nice. I don't like upgrades, and will not purchase if it is.
Originally by: "Answer" With W7 and also Vista there is no distinction between "upgrade" discs and full install discs. They are identical, down to the md5 sum. The thing that decides upgrade or full install is the license key, nothing else.
All the dude did was tell me that the key determines if it's upgrade or full install, not the actual content on the disc. My question was in regards to a website that was in one instance making it sound like I could do a full install, and sometimes making it sound like it was only an upgrade. ------------------------------
EVE players are just as immature as WoW players. |
