I'm not sure, but it seem to me the chances of getting caught smuggling anything in EVE is quite remote in the current version of the game. I don't remember ever having been scanned by NPCs in high sec, and the fact we can jump nearly on station or jump gates mean we rarely stay long enough in scanning range of a police patrol to risk getting caught. I never did try to smuggle stuff actively in EVE yet, but i had some dog tags in cargo that i should not have brought, and normally should have been caught due to the amount of travel i did with them in the wrong Empire space... Yet, nothing bad ever happened.
Is it still possible to get caught smuggling in EVE?

Smuggling seems to be a woefully underutilised activity in Eve. As you say the chances of being stopped are marginal and it's very much a "if you get stopped you're guaranteed death if you try and run" thing.
Would be more interesting if smuggling reaped decent rewards at significantly higher risks, and instead of customs ships just hanging around stargates they would patrol a system instead - you'd possibly need to use a scout to see if they were on the gate or not.
Also, if you get stopped, you should have the option to run and have them chase you (across multiple systems?) or something. Right now as far as I know (I'm not 100% sure) if you don't pay the penalty you just get blown away.

I get caught *every* *single* time.
Got a station vault filled with dog tags illegal in Amarr and would like to bring them to my current base of operations. Trouble is that the custom dudes are always on the gate to my base. They don't even seem to take a bio break.

I thought clicking jump counted as a scan with a % chance of catching you. á á

It's a matter of beating the customs targeting speed. They have passive targeting mods so you never see them target you.
If you align and warp fast enough they will never scan you. If you cloak-align they will never scan you.
My opinions belong to me, you can't have them!

Try checking to see if they are actually still classed as contraband before being pleasantly surprised :) .

AFAIK the Customs police stay only at regional gates. Its been a long time since I checked that, however.
Yes, I agree that smuggling should be used more.

travelled with a scimi + 3 nanofibres and lost faction standing in roughly every second high-sec do not recommend - putting the gist back into logistics |

That's because the align time even with nanofibers on is not good enough. Try a covert ops and initiate warp and cloak ASAP, you should be fine.

I've been moving Boosters from the drug POS to Jita, Rens and Amarr. I've gotten stopped twice with a....300k+ fine and a drop in standing : i would not let them confiscate it. I use transport ships so maybe thats why i can get away from them when I tell them I will not give up my cargo? On that note I only seem to get caught when im not paying attention I have not yet figured out if covert cloaking right away works to get away from them.

I use the corp hangar of an Orca. Works great, as it isn't scanned.

I can confirm that this exploit does indeed work. Gotta love that corp hanger, it gets around so many things.

I got in trouble in Caldari space for having a load of small arms on board.
Of course, don't want those Caldari slaves to rise up against their corporatists, so they must not be allowed to have guns. They should be more like Gallente, let them have guns and make them think they are free when they are not, and they don't know they are just as screwed by the same corporates. Sounds like someplace else I know.
The smuggling thing could be a nice bridge between PVE and PVP if done right. Otherwise it's just not mattering much. Have to jet slaves too often in order to keep the SOE nuns from slapping my wrists. Could take them back to Minnie space but they can't pay for the ride. Why can't I make them clean my hangar instead? I'll pay them.

How long do you stay in their presence before they start shooting at you?

Not all gates in EVE have customs NPCs. And of those that do I read chances of being scanned at only 1 in 10, meaning they will scan you only 10% of times that you pass through. So depending on your route and your luck you can transfer illegal good relatively safely.

Last I checked they were, but there was no penalties associated with them. I got busted hauling them many times, but they weren't confiscated and I would just get EVE mails saying I was charged 0 isk and lost 0 standing.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |

True for me too, but I can add that cloaking doesn't change anything, nor the fact if there are customs at the gate or not. It happens randomly and you can plain ignore them.
