Something that came to my mind was a way for detecting those pesky afk-cloakers, without making it completely absolete.
Create a new probetype, launchable only when using a covops. Limit it so you can only have one of these probes active. Then how do you find the cloaker with triangulation?
By using 4 of the probes....... The other probes ofc beeing launched by other pilots in their covops-ships.
The main problem with this would bee to somehow get the scanning interface to enable this, but I was thinking along the lines of the probers beeing in fleet and in the same squad, and the the squad commander beeing able to direct the probing efforts.
Now these new probes could either be made to only pick up some of the (scif-fi mumbo-jumbo particles) emitted by the cloaked ships, or, they could also be used as a faster means to probe down other ship (faster due to increased scan strenght).
Overall I think this suggestion would not be the end for afk-cloaking, since it still would take a combined effort to probe it down, and those not afk should easily be able to stay safe.
Some method of decloaking ships on grid would likely be needed, otherwise afkcloakers would simpy need to click in empty space and slowboat, thus not beeing on the warpinspot when they have been probed down. My thinking of solving this is..... another probe
This probe is of very short range (for use on grid only) and would also need 4 covops ships to operate. A succesful ping of a cloaked ship would decloak it (though not if a ship is in the same fleet as the probers).
Now I want as many criticising rants as possible to improve on this idea. Is there any major work that would need to make this work besides the interface for the probing fleet(maybe someone on CCP could tell me)?
My main reason why this is all good: It benefits the active players, and gives us a way to deal with a threat, that's otherwise impossible.

Edited by: Zahorite on 03/11/2009 05:29:13 It would be easier to just put in a new scan option to the interface that allowed basically a deep scanning of a system. This could take an extremly long time 15 minutes to an hour. But it would be able to track down cloaked ships. It doesn't really matter if they are moving along once you warp to where they are located even if they were moving a combined effort from multiple ships should be able to find them, a dozen interceptors orbitting the person that warped in at 20-40km would probably have a 50% chance of finding them as they passed that range. Of course if they didn't then the person would just have to scan them down again and warp to where they are once again and do it over. Eventually they would find someone in a cloak that was afk. Anyone not afk could just drop their cloak and warp to a new spot every once inawhile. Or you could even show the probe on their overview when it found them since it would need to get much closer to get 100% on a cloaked ship, if they aren't afk they will immediatly drop cloak and warp to a new safespot, if they are afk for that long they deserve to get blown up.

Edited by: Semper Nefarius on 03/11/2009 06:13:33 I can understand your suggestion would most likely mean a lot less work for the devs, but I still see some benefits with my suggestion.
A very long scan time would mean it's unlikely to catch any but the most afk cloakers Those semi-afk browsing the web or mining in empire at the same time would still be able to avoid beeing scanned and could easily go about their business.
However, having a short scantime and only needing one ship would be a hard blow on the use of all cloaked ship imo.
Another thing is my second proposed probe (for decloaking on grid ships), could be nice toys used in more regular warfare, at gates etc........

I really don't mind the cloaked afk'ers if they want to hang around for a couple of hours. However, everyone needs to sleep eventually. It bugs me to see someone cloaked and afk in a system for 2 or more day, I know for a fact they aren't actually sitting at their computer that entire time. If they are at their computer then I don't care if they are afk and cloaked away. Let's just take it one step at a time and get rid of the guys that sit there for days, if it's still a problem after that we can always look for another solution or even just lower the scan time a bit.

As I have stated in pretty much every single "AFK cloakers solution invented!!!11oneone" thread I posted in, the very phenomenon of afk cloakers exists solely in the heads of those who metagame by abusing local too much.
And no developers in their right mind will ever "fix" something that is a side-effect of metagaming. Are afk-cloakers an issue in WH-space? No, they are not. Guess why?

Why is afk cloaking a problem in the first place? A cloak is nullified if the ship can be scanned down.

afk cloakers are not a problem. staying cloaked somewhere may be a tactical game for making you insecure or feeling unsafe preventing you doing things you would do without cloaker.
Cloaks are working fine.

Ah, afk cloaking. The player's not there, the ship can't achieve anything, and STILL people complain about it.
What's the point? if somebody's AFK they aren't actually achieving anything other than making you nervy and paranoid. Threads like this prove that the tactic works, too. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

That isn't completly true. Right now afk cloaking is often used to sit in a system for two or three days, then you come out of cloak search down a hulk or whatever you want to blow us, and then you blow it up without any warning. Nobody is going to just sit in station or go to a different system because there is an afk cloaked red in system, however it does get the guy doing it a kill or two.
Cloaks are supposed to be used to ambush people or to hide from people. Not to lull people into a false sense of security and then blow a random guy up.
Perhaps the best idea would be to just have a system upgrade in Domionion that would either allow people that use it to track down cloaked ships or just disrupt any cloak that has been up for over half an hour.

yes, its working.
1) go hunt ratters 2) stay in a system afk cloaked, go shopping or playing console, while they hide in a POS 3) come back in some hours 4) profit
I can understand they dont like this, however I dont like cloaky or hiding in a POS bubble carebears. Afk cloaky is the only way to catch the suckers, hit them unprepared and cloak again.

i recon all afkers should get a little box on there avatar so show that there away just like yahoo and msn and even afkers in station should get booted from a station for staying docked for to long

Yeah, because yahoo and msn messenger are comparable tactical games with PVP combat, right?
Local should be nerfed. Problem solved.

No.
this would ruin all the tactical value of afk cloaking. As soon as the victim knows whether I'm afk or not I could stop doing that anyways.

Edited by: Praetendere on 04/11/2009 13:44:08 People often get bumped out of a POS when afk in a similar fashion after a certain period maybe the coakes could produce a detectable radiation that probs can lock onto. The larger the ship the sooner a detectable amount of radiation is released.
If a prototype cloak is used then if you are on the same or adjacent grids for 15mins then you start to leak radiation.

people are never bumped out of a FF because they are afk, this happens accidentally and in few cases for a purpose.

Cloaks are there to lull people into a false sense of security, the point of cloaking is that people don't know you are there.
Also what are you talking about 2-3 days? at downtime if they are afk, then they are logged out, atleast everytime i am online during downtime i get booted and dont log back in until I log back in.
Another point, if they are afk they are no threat until they come back, at which time they are no longer afk cloaking, making the so called problem not a problem.

I agree with changing local to fix the problem. Local shouldnt be used as your intel tool. Its used so you can communicate with people not in your fleet/corp/alliance. Thats all it should be used for. fix local, cloaks leave the same
