alright... here's a very crazy crazy idea. but hear me out, because i personally think it's pretty cool.
-Imagine if you will... on the fitting screen there is a second line of fitting slots, with a number of spots equal to half the regular slots(rounded down). these slots are "linked" to an equivalent set of the regular slots. so a ship with 5 high energy slots has two secondary high energy slots underneath the 2 right most high energy slots. (there will of course be an option to hide these slots)
-when you are in space, you can exchange the linked primary slots for the items in your secondary slots of that power slot type. you cannot switch individual items, you have to do a switch for all the secondary items for that power level. if you have empty secondary slots, you will be switching to empty slots. They begin as inactive and must be activated for use.
-items on the secondary array (whether they started there or were switched to that position) use up half their normal CPU and powergrid, but are otherwise treated as inactive. The CPU and powergrid readouts will have another value in parenthesis indicating the greatest amount it could become of any combination of linked primary slots exchanged for secondary slots.
-so here's an example (i haven't calculated the cpu and powergrid to see if this would actually work so just take it at face value). You're running a mission in a Battlecruiser, let's say a Drake. You just finished and you'd like to clean up all those juicy wrecks and their loot. combat is over so all your dps and tanking modules aren't necessary anymore. switch some of your missile launchers to salvagers and tractor beams. switch some of your shield extenders to an afterburner and cap rechargers. switch some of you low slot items to cargo expanders or extra cpu and powergrid if your secondary fitting will require it. slowly activate the modules 1 by 1 as you start to loot your mission.
this provides a level of flexibility to a player who does not wish to dock and refit or pick up a new ship. and i don't think it would be game breaking since the secondary modules detract from your cpu and powergrid and therefore limit you capabilities at any one time(i said 50% just to be conservative, 33% is probably more balanced). and since you have to wait to activate each module it's not going to be a heavily exploited strategy for PvP or anything. I just hate going out to a mission a few jumps away from home base and suddenly realizing I wish I was flying something a little bit different. How is this ever useful for anyone but lazy mission runners that cant have 12 high slots to fit extra tractor / salvagers?
PvP fit rarely have more then 5% grid/CPU to spare.
