I was living in West Berlin at the time.
The strange thing was that we heard on the news that anyone who wanted an exit visa could get one on short notice, but we did not immediately understand the implication that this effectively ended the Berlin Wall.

If I remember well, this was the time when my mother made a bet with my father, saying that until new year, Ceausescu and the communism in Romania will fall. The answer of my 2m tall father was:
"Shut up! You are stupid! You don't know what you are talking about"
hehehe ... but in the end, he payed a dinner to my mother. She won the bet. The communism in Romania fall, Ceausescu and his wife where executed in the Christmas Day of 1989.
As some said, they received as a Christmas gift some bullets....
Any way, I am thanking Gorbaciov and Bush (the father) they where the one realizing it's much easier to control the masses (eastern Europe) with "freedom" "democracy" and "mass consumption" other way, we wouldn't even have access to EVE :)
Or I am just pessimistic tonight, I can't really see the full half of the glass.
I was 12 back then.

I was in West Berlin, luckily and accidentally, as the wall came down. I still have a bit of it somewhere in a box with my baby teeth.
Our family had a visa to get into East Berlin but of course it wasn't needed: we went over and dined at the top of a rotating restaurant at the top of a tower, can't remember the name of it. We ate something horrible with red cabbage and it was incredibly cheap. The Berliners were crying and hugging each other by the checkpoint crossings. Just a day before they would have been shot at.

I visited West Berlin shortly before the felling of the wall. It was a land of wonders compared to what we had in the East. In the final years it was quite easy to "smuggle" technology through the East-West border control, they didn't take it that seriously anymore. Though you could get busted on the trains when crossing borders (CoCom).
East Germany was ridiculously cheap. LOL, I remember that you could simply roll out hundreds of tickets from the holder in subway stations since you paid via an honor box I did that since I had no idea how it worked up until someone came up to me and convinced me that it was best not to steal the whole roll of tickets. I probably thought I won or something.

And yet, after 20 years, Germany is still divided. Socially, economically and structurally. All the funds made available from taxes to build up the eastern states was siphoned away by empty promises and corruption.
Of course the people in charge are too busy celebrating themselves to admit that the German Unity was, once again, a typically half-assed almost failure of a revolution as every other before in Germany's history... -------- Ideas for: Mining

Big deal.
All that communism didn't go away, it just spilled out all over the rest of the world.
Look at the USA now. We got presidential cabinet members who are certifiable communists. Most of the world is either socialist, or nationalist.
Of course in the USA we have to be exceptional, so we have national socialism and we get the "best" of both worlds.

SNL had a great skit about Ceausescu's funeral service with the punchline something about it being in the gutter "over there".
Anyway, I remember it well, having just turned 15. It pretty much invalidated last quarter of my Freshman History class. We had to memorize all the countries in Europe (plus the rest of the continents), and by the time I graduated half that information was wrong. I may be exaggerating slightly.
I remember watching the footage of the celebration and all the happiness, even here in America.
Then came reunification and a real understanding of the bleakness of the East's industry, agriculture, economy, social services, general welfare, and all the work that would need to be done (and apparently still does) to bring them to parity with their Western brothers.
Next up: the Koreas, and that could be trillions of times worse if it ever happens. At least East Germany had electricity. And food (plus a whole lot more). The only hope is that most North Koreans think the South is no better off, so they won't storm across the border looking for anything but family.
PS - sorry to derail the thread.

Korea has been commented on in the news, there certainly are parallels, so it's not a complete derailment.
I have been told that one of the problems with re-unification was that former state owned east german companies suddenly found themselves inside the EU, cut off from their non-EU buyers and suppliers due to the trade rules. Not sure how much impact that had.

I find it quite amusing how people comment on North Korea as though they have special information about how life is there, as far as I'm aware the only information we in the west have is what our media and governments tell us........ which lets be honest isnt a very good source. Yes there probably are people suffering from malnutrition etc, but I can show you plenty of so called democratic country's that have the same problem.... hell I could even take you down some streets in London where you can see such degradation.

But now you're making the same mistake yourself. If we on the outside don't have special information of how life is there, as you put it. How can you then in the next sentence make a comparison to some people in for example London?

Believe me, no communist would ever call the US that, only borderline national socialist republicans ever would.
I remember the day, didn't really understand the magnitude of it at the time and why the elders were so upset, in a positive way. Having grown up with the two sides one thought it would endure forever.

I'm seeing the word "Communism" and "Freedom" being used a lot in this thread, what East Germany was liberated from was not a communist society, it was an escape from the clutches of an elitist dictatorship, not one country has ever adapted Communism as it was originally intended.
Communism as it is described fails purely because it is an attempt at distributing wealth via a system of money and labour, this fails simply because wealth should be irrelevent, it is resource that should be distributed. When somebody looks at a plot of land with the intent to build on it they say "do we have the money to build here?" when what they should be saying is "do we have the resources to build here?" Allowing people to hog and waste resources simply because they pay for the right to do so can only lead to disaster in the end.
*Quote* At the beginning of World War II the U.S. had a mere 600 or so first-class fighting aircraft. They rapidly overcame this short supply by turning out more than 90,000 planes a year. The question at the start of World War II was: Do we have enough funds to produce the required implements of war? The answer was No, they did not have enough money, nor did we have enough gold; but we did have more than enough resources. It was the available resources that enabled the US to achieve the high production and efficiency required to win the war. Unfortunately this is only considered in times of war. *Quote*
