This is probably already in the forums but after looking through the first few pages of search results I couldn't find anything.
I'm curious as to how repair drones work. Specifically with respect to how they are activated when your ship or a fleeted ship has taken damage. For example, if I have shield repair drones deployed and take shield damage do they automatically start repairing? If a fleet member takes damage will they automatically start repairing the fleet member? If yes, is there any prioritization in what is repaired first (me or fleet members)?
I use combat drones regularly and enjoy playing as a Gallente drone pilot. I have mining alts and ideally would setup my BS with Heavy Shield drones deployed in the belt while I am mining. The goal would be to provide additional defense to my barges from suicide ganks while in hi-sec, i.e. so I can AFK the BS and focus on my barges. (it is very unlikely the BS would die before concord arrived). I would like to have the shield drones automatically start repairing if any damage occurs to any of my fleeted ships. Is this possible?
If drones must be automatically targeted what methods exist to make this easer? If I'm in a fleet the only way I know to watch fleet member's HP is to use the 'add watch' function. If a member takes damage and they must be targeted and then drones told to engage this will significantly slow down the time until a repair cycle begins.
Any details on the logistics of repair drones (and for that matter remote rep gear in general) would be appreciated prior to training those skills.

Long story short, they work exactly the same way as combat drones, except that you use them on your friends. They will not auto-rep, and you cannot use them on yourself.
Something else you could get into, which is similar is remote repping (or remote shield transfer) and Logistic ships (somewhat of a longer term goal).

Can't use them on yourself? That is very disappointing.
Okay so if they work the same way as remote repping does can you elaborate on that please? With regard to my original question how do you easily monitor the health of fleet members and initiate repping. Is it a matter of actually targeting them individually?

Fleet members can broadcast requests, for amongst others, armor So you see the icon Target Send drones to rep armor
You can keep a medium repper drone in your drone bay and use it to repair your other drones that get damaged. Handy if you are a drone ship working away from a station -----------------------------------------------

Exactly. Which is why you can't use them on yourself. You can't target your own ship.

You can use 'Watch member' under fleet commands on your mates if you are in a fleet. Their health will show in a seperate window so you are free to target other things and only need to target them and heal them when their health goes down.
Of course, if you only do logistics (i.e. armor repping shield boosting other) you will just target all your fleet members right away. Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie ROTDK is recruiting

good tips, good tips.
Can you target someone directly from the watch window? Also, once they are targeted does it work like the overview window where you can click the name and it will make them the active target? (I think overview lets you do this, going from memory and not positive)
I looked up logistic ships in EVEMon and it shows the max locked targets of 10. I assume high priority skills for these pilots would be to max out targeting & multitasking. In large fleet operations is there typically one logistics pilot per 10 member squad?
For my original goal of supporting my mining operation against suicide gankers in high-sec given the fact they aren't automated there doesn't appear to be any value in using the shield repair drones. I don't want to train for logistics so tell me if this is a good approach (this is in addition to equipping mining vessels with the appropriate skills & fittings, of course):
1. Take a BS and equip with some Large Shield Transporter II's. A BS appears much, much harder to gank than a logistics ship. Plus I'm Gallente so their logistics ship doesn't have shield transfer benefits and mining vessels are shield tanks. 2. Fleet up with mining vessels and target them all, up to 7 3. Add a watch for all vessels. 4. Run perm-tank on the BS and minimize window - safe enough for high-sec suicide gankers
If my mining vessels take any damage (they should be able to survive at least a volley or two) switch to the BS, click the vessel in the watch window and then use the shield transporters until concord arrives.
Is there any better defense against high-sec gankers? I'm not looking for something I can AFK, and obviously yes no matter what you do you are not 100% safe and don't fly what you can't afford to lose, etc, but I would still want to TRY to survive long enough for support to arrive to make expensive mining vessles not worth the trouble.

... because you can't target yourself

Right-click on in fleet: "Add to watch list". Still have to target though (and people wonder what Multitasking is for).
