If you leave your ship in space, will it stay there indefinitely, or will it expire and disappear after a time?
Can anyone enter the ship and take it, or is there a way to lock it?
Do said empty ships in space show up in scans? (d-scan and/or probes)

It will stay there
Someone can nick it when they want. Only in a POS is it safe (until someone bowls it out)

Thanks for the response. Does an abandoned ship show up differently on scanners than an occupied one?
I am wondering about the possibility of using empty ships as bait in low-sec. Has anyone successfully done this?

It shows up essentially the same, although in the overview it loses a name. It can be done as bait, yes. There is no way to lock it and you don't get aggression on someone for jumping into it so its bait use is limited.

Abandoned ships will sit for 30 days before being automatically removed.
There might be a difference if the ship is left in a pos shield. |

That's rookie ships and shuttles only.

Ships will not removed if being close to starbases.

Edited by: Contralto on 11/11/2009 18:41:43 I maybe reading replies wrongly here but locking an empty ship is possible, I do this several times a day to prevent my Alts Orca being boarded while he is in an ejected ship, I have targeted the empty ship with several characters including the alt.
The ship remains the property of the pilot who ejected, he is the only one allowed to board it if it is targeted by anyone. If not targeted anyone can board it and assume ownership.

I shall have to test this, may be quite a handy little trick to know.

Never heard of that, but i believe i only ejected once from a ship to have it moved through Highsec.

He is referring to locking on to the empty ship with the targeting system on your own ship. --------------------------------------------

Yes, there is just a bit of confusion here. The orca pilot means target-locking an empty ship, however the question being discussed is whether it is possible to lock (the same way you'd lock your car after you park it) a ship.
Locking your abandoned ship (like your car), is not possible, and anyone can board it without receiving any flagging. Of course this does not apply to ships left inside the force-fields of online POS's.

Edited by: Norienda ''no''Nejdo on 13/11/2009 16:33:24 Long story short... If an empty ship is locked(read being targeted) by another ship, it can not be boarded. If an empty ship is left alone and not locked(read being targeted by anyone) it can be boarded by anyone. This is not a way of locking a ship, as it ties one alt up to make the ship unboardable.
