You can use pulses too in those ships just fine for PVE, and for long range scorch attack against smaller ships at some distance.
PVP abaddon is pulseboat yes.

Pulse apoc is great for level 4s because you get 60km range with scorch ammo and no extra range mods.

There is no wrong answer to using Pulses or Beams. It falls on your playing style more then anything else.
I prefer beams for missioning becasue I prefer to fight at range, but they cost alot in terms of fitting flexibility. And as many will confirm, loading an Apoc with Pulses is a good idea...heck loading Pulses on any ship with a range bonus could be good.
Another over simplified answer (for me) is beams for PvE, pulses for PvP.
BTW, if you go pulses on Apocs and Paladins, you can easily fit 2 armor reps and fight cap stable, so you'll have firepower and a sustainable tank.
So really, I dont think you've wasted any time if you prefer close to mid range fighting.

This. Beam geddon or abaddon work well too, but the Pulse apoc is a very relaxed level 4 boat.

The Paladin is pretty much supposed to be used as a beam platform, simply because it's a LOT easier to fit 4x tachs on a Paladin than 8x tachs on an apoc. IIRC, Tachs actually have higher DPS than megapulses, which makes them unique amongst the other long range weapons. Too bad they have insane power and cap requirements. ---------- There is always a choice. The choice might not be easy, nor simple, nor the options be what you desire - but, nevertheless, the choice is there to be made. |

megapulse do have higher dps then tachys, it just happens to only be effective dps out to 20ish km +/- a bit depending on fit.
and not like the skills for beams/pulses are all that different. good to have both anyways.
pulse apoc is good and all but nothing vs a tach paladin/nightmare

I thought when I came in here that some Minnie was training lasers or something.
Training both is a very good thing. You will want them both at some point.

Abaddon uses beams (most times). Same as Paladin. Geddon is very cool with mega PULSE and Apoc (both) do work very well with PULSE too (close to 100km with Mega PULSE and right fitting).
In the end you want both. Pulse and Beam. So you "wasted" no time. Just chose the right ships with propper fittings now ;).
