And now we've got the second part of that little about-face I wrote.
This is a new entry in our chronicle series, published on Mondays every other week.

So this explains how pod pilots can change their portraits, which means I'm as guilty as Gilea then.

Part two was a bit anti-climactic, I half expected a strange twist where Gilea would end up in prison and the face she selected set free to assume her identity....

I thought that was a good second part. I didn't see that coming until the masked man killed himself. Unsettling story though, Eve is a creepy place.

Wow, what a story.
Luckily, that not all of us with power and money are selfish bastards but actually care for the mis-fortunate.
Btw. Abraxas, does podpilots store their original body, the one the carries the scars from their childhood and youth, somewhere safe or does it get destroyed the first time their have a pod breach?
While this chronicle beautifully describes the "mechanics" behind avatar face alterations, I think it could be interesting to dip into the mechanics of clone jumping and what that means to the concepts of being alive or dead. ---------------- Mr. Science & Trade Institute

On the subject of clones, I thought they were all stored in suspended animation at the bio-facility until you needed to use it, then your brain image would be transferred to the clone on death of your current physical form.
Some people say that the bodies are grown from stem cells, others say it's labotomized prisoners or other enemies of the State. Who knows for sure though.

Not my favorite chronicle. I thought it was pretty cliched, and have seen better.
I'd be interested in seeing stories that are sophisticated but *not* gloomy or sadistic more often. The author is a fantastic wordsmith, and there is a big universe out there. How about mining some story telling themes from a new vein?

One thing I noticed in several chronicles from different authors is the use of the empire as a race classification. IMHO, this should be avoided and instead the bloodline used. This will give a much more accurate first impression of the character and allows the reader to establish a visual archetype before more information about a character is given, if any.
For example, instead of writing "A group of Minmatar clansmen stormed into the bar." you write "A group of Vherokior clansmen stormed into the bar." In the first example, you probably thought of Brutor or similar types and not of a bunch of Vherokior on a sugar rush. --------

Edited by: MeatyBTZ on 16/11/2009 17:49:16 I kind of thought of that once.. A story revolving around a Pilot tired of the never ending but not wanting to stop being a pilot. Wanting to have both.. fakes his death, cuts out the chip that activates on death to wake a clone, while he ships to some paridise planet and does something mundain for the rest of his life. Alas, its not to be, slavers attack the planet he is taken as a slave and the transport pilot happens to be his "other self". Kind of a Gemini Story. Lots of untaped potential there. Tons of possible plot lines. Cloning Capsuleers to try and increase fleet size for an up comming war, etc. Other madness. Could be something Sansha tried.
As for the story, good as ever, but yeah kinda creepy. More than a little disturbing...

This is a prime example of the seedy underbelly of New Eden, where everything can be bought for a price. Just goes to show that money is no obstacle to some people, and neither is their conscience.
One of the best, if not more chilling Chronicles I have read.
Well done.

That part about underground drug manufacturing reminded me of some earlier chronicle. There were masked people there and flies. I don't remember which chronicle it was though. Help anyone?

Even my thought after reading this chronicle this morning in bed. What if he doesn't suffer Prosopagnosia, but their faces were used the same way (or used for the capsuleers clones maybe?). AFAIR, the capsuleer was very kind, so maybe he had some possibility to duplicate his face in some way and give them his face for exchange ... MAN ! this is getting weirder with every chronicle in this row. It really shows the abyss of some persons ...
Can't wait for the next chronicle !!!

Brrr, I got the genuine shivers after reading that. In the universe of New Eden, ISK really can buy you anything.
What would I like to know is what Gilea's reasons were for applying for the ultimate face-lift. Was it necessity or merely vanity. Or was it her knowing that she could do it, and that was reason in itself.

This was a pretty cool story. It would seem to fit for a lead in to the character reconstruction that the Devs have been talking about when "Walking in stations" comes into effect. I would hate to think that my reconstruction would leave some virtual prisoner without a face and in mental termoil. OK JK on the caring about the virtual prisoner.

EDIT: Ah, not a chronicle, a short story :) Saccade
I love when you tie your stories to something old and obscure, and then a small detail brings out the memories of a good read.
There are still some links missing ... masks as punishment there and "new" faces for some rich maniacs here ... or was that punishment just a lie for the new employee? Really weird

Edited by: Typhado3 on 18/11/2009 07:09:12 Very nice. Very interesting story.
And good spotting on the connection between this and that other short story.
Couple questions though, who really runs these things? what the hell did these people do to end up in these prisons? Something tells me they didn't do something that bad... maybe it's the fact the picture makes the victim look sorta like an angle.
The one thing I find slightly wierd in this chronicle is the minmatar flashback (or whatever you call it), it just sounds so much like it's the sorta scene you would see in a Amarr slave mine. At first I wasn't sure weather this was an Amarr camp with Minmatar prisoners or a Minmatar camp with Minmatar prisoners until I went back and re-read the first part of this chronicle. I just find it slightly wierd or disgusting that the minmatar would do exactly the same to their own as they have been rebeling against for so long. Not saying it's not impossible it's EVE afterall can't expect people to be nice.
It would make a lot more sense to me (or at least make me feel a lot better about being minmatar) if these where run by the pirate factions. However that brings up it's own problems with the blood raiders, stealing peoples faces would probably be a step up for them.
Also while I don't see myself doing it will we be able to run these sort of places when planetary interaction is released? ------------------------------

According to the Empyrean Age novel the "original" body of the capsuleer is destroyed when they first get podded. The Gallente ceptor pilot (who's name I can't remember) talks about how his new body's skin feels like that of a newborn baby and comments on a scar that he used to have that is now gone.
Of course there might be situations where this is not true. For example if you create a jump clone when you still have your original body then jump to the new clone and store your original body somewhere safe. But usually the original body will be lost once the pod is breached (or at the very least the body's brain will be destroyed to facilitate the transfer of the conciousness).

Sure. If one of these factions runs this "service", the cruel lying about the face-"givers" (put to death) would be comprehensive. On the other hand, would the wish for a new face bring rich people to deal with pirate factions? Though, the original face was stored "ready for use if she ever needed it back". Or, if the corporation needed the face for some intent? Weird, weird ....
