Good evening everyone,
After being whinged at by my wife for being 26, an Army officer and yet still playing 'silly time consuming kiddies computer games' I got a bit upset and told her STFU.
Most FPS games I have played seem to revolve around 14 yr old kids killing everything that moves (including their own team!). EVE however appears to cater for the older gamer.
I was wondering what the average age/maturity of EVE players actually is? In this way I can actually tell my wife to STFU cos all the other people who play EVE are my age... I hope!

Is between 20 and 40
Currently between jobs, but i don't see why this game should be a silly kids game. I have a friend that is 46 and he can't get enough of Ultima Online..

In no way is eve a 14yr olds game. Afaik, 25-30 is a possible average of the gamers. I dunno what happened with the new entries though, marketing tends to bring in trash games
There was a TV newsreport about the eve fanfest saying something about 30 yr old ppl gaming 24/7...
Now, on the wife matter, you could convince her otherwise... "woohoo! I podded Tank CEO today, I'm sooo hot baby".... Please contact Tank and ask him for that favor

Edited by: Rod Blaine on 06/11/2004 18:13:40 The wife part was more advice then truth.
I think of the older people most have a so called 'loved one'. (sorry for using that word, sounds awfully Dr Phil)
Anyway, Eve has probabaly the most mature playerbase of any MMO out there. Altho being old doesn't say you can't act like kids.

aye, most people I've met in this game are more mature than some of the other games; seems like most people I meet are indeed 20-40, however, I meet a number of high teens, low 20s.
And about the being 26 and playing a 'silly kids game' I have a friend I met on Daoc (dark age of camelot) who is 63, and owns 3 accounts. (and Daoc has a lower average maturity) _______________________________ SF-C recruitment |

Easy solution to the 'wife problem'. Send her back to her mothers, place an add in loney hearts, in your personal description just put Eve. Sit back and wait for the offers to flood in :)
As for the age/maturity question, Maturity about 15 years younger than the age. Those of teenage years find the game too complex and want the quick fix of a game where they can kill anything that moves.

age is not maturity. You may get many 14 yr olds who are immature, but stereotyping all of them is prejudice.

Well, I'm 16 years old.
And it seems like EVEs playerbase is fairly mature. (I'm consciously not using the word 'old') It looks like yer more complex a game is, yer more mature is the playerbase but that's just a guess.
Regarding maturity: It's not really linked to age. It would be kind of cool if you could somehow judge the playerbases maturity instead of its average age, as I know a 11 year old from another Onlinegame, who's more mature than most other people I've ever met on there. That being with a playerbase of ~26 years avg.

You can show her the Dadalus Project Gender and Age Distribution. The Dadalus Project is a study of people who play MMOs in general. It's pretty clear that MMOs are not dominated by "kiddies".
Hope that helps.

Been playing MMO's since i was 16, can say it is far more fun playing MMO's then single player games. Maturity in EVE is generally good but it does have its moments.
On the loosing side people "generally" (not all) drop a century in maturity.
Im 20 now, 2 years EQ, 2 years DAoC, 1.5 years EVE. :) My EX hated me playing MMO's

Methinks thats because of the fact that most 'kiddies' can't afford MMOGs. (Or their parents don't allow them to pay for em XD)

29 here.
If I was married I wouldn't play I don' t think - probably get too much grief. I had a longterm Gf and used to play online FPS's and that was bad enough. Devoting 6+ hours a day maybe to a MMORPG does not fit in with most women's idea of a good time. But then neither does buying a Subaru Impreza or Plasma screen Tv instead of taking them out shopping :)
My theory on Eve is that its good for 20-35 year olds who wish to have their mid-life crisis early before they need to have any responsibility.

Im 35.. but theres another thing Id like to discuss:
when the playerbase is 'so old/mature' isnt it worrying that so many posts on the forum are so derogatory, seems like a large number of the people posting on the forums are just hovering waiting to post to tell someone how dumb they are and how amazing they are themselves... thats pretty sickening in the long run..

Da wife is a message board and email group junky so she don't complain much about the time I put into the game after the kids are asleep.

41 going on 20, (at least in my head). Military background now a senior Manager in an IT Consultancy/Training company. Own house, gorgeous fiancÚe, almost got rid of the kids and spending all their inheritance on booze, cars, motor bikes oh and Eve, (2 accounts), this being my main one. My misses doesnÆt understand why I play Eve but at least she accepts it, just the same as I don't understand why she watches Corrie, Eastenders etal, (TV soaps for non UK residents), but I accept that so we are equal. Just tell her to STFU and lock her in a cupboard until she sees sense.
Just my two penny worth.
Noo sig comming SOONÖ =================================================== What are we going to do about all this ignorance and apathy?.... I don't know and I don't care! |

38 Here.
Eve for the most part has a mature player base but as said earlier in this thread, it does have it's moments.
I think Maturity in MMO's is linked to ideology and ideology is linked to how you think about the game if that makes sence. That somewhat makes age irelevant in terms of maturity imho.

Maturity has a lot to do with age, imo.
Some people are mistaking sensible kids with maturity.

Let's just put it this way:
When I was 16, a MMORPG was a text-based BBS with a dozen players.
