Edited by: Sochin on 08/11/2004 04:37:41 Anyone living in the United States knows the horrible job Simon & Shulster did promoting EVE's initial launch in the United States. I would have never even HEARD of the game if it weren't for Gamespot's Beta Center.
Now that Exodus is finally arriving, and *most* major gameplay issues have been resolved, prehaps it is finally time for CCP to find a new publisher to re-release EVE for retail in the United States. Prehaps this new publisher could do some actual advertising for the game, and maybe some new box art (Since the original art kinda sucked).
At the very least I would like to see CCP take out some big banner ads on the various gaming sites, and hopefully get them to re-review EVE when Exodus hits. Many of the current reviews are very mediocre (Gamespot's is 6.6 out of 10!).

Agreed, the US market has hardly been tapped, and I for one would like to see some more US players.

Even with advertising, your not going to catch the 'just browsing for a new game out of boredom at the store' crowd. There are alot of people out there that don't bother paying attention to advertising on the net, or that download games and just rely on what the back of the box (That is in their hands) says. Which btw, is how I ended up with this game a year ago.

A couple weeks ago someone else brought this up. Someone from PR at CCP responded and stated that once Exodus is released, there will be a start of a new advertising campaign as EVE is released anew. They will get new reviews and I believe work on a North American publisher. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

CCP had a distribution agreement with some publisher... It didn't turn out all too well. You know how they are "Oh we will distribute your product just give us money lots and lots of money and let us dictate how you will do things. Okay?" I'm guessing that is how that went down. Even if they release it to Amazon they will do well.

Frankly the best thing CCP ever did was buy back the rights to their game. S&SI did a horrid job with the birth of this game. Now that CCP has full rights to their product they can concentrate on building a game they want instead of one that a publisher wants to "sell" (and I use sell loosly).
I would say the best way to get players it by word of mouth. Imagine if the fans of EVE set out with flyers and wireless gaming systems and setup in public areas to show off the game. Consider it like a grass roots style advertising, like politics. If you want CCP and EVE in general to push into the US market better than what happend with S&SI, consider holding EVE weekends in your area, like a local users group. Setup areas where players can come and play the game, and talk with the fans and have a fun time. EVE is about community, and having fun doing it.
The best sales pitch comes from a happy customer. (:

I'd imagine the main source of costs involved with publishers (other than paying the bloodsuckers) is production materials (b0xen, CDs).
Why not sell CD Keys to use on the website for account activation? They could be sold on Amazon etc, couldn't they?
Another option would be to sell through IT component websites (in the way Dabs.com does here). This would probably attract a larger market than simply hoping word of mouth and the reviews on MMO sites do the job - this would bring EVE to the masses, who've never played an MMO |

Edited by: Aion Amarra on 08/11/2004 13:11:38 Minyon: Writing things like that makes you more annoying than most Americans will ever be. Doh. Shut up if you've got nothing to say.
I'd say at last some advertising wouldn't harm the game at all. Perhaps make the Game Time Cards available through a few more internet shops than they are currently as well. (Amazon hasn't got them. At last in Germany. There are some retail boxes for sale, though. 12,99Ç)
A boxed version with some kind of bonus material would be neat. And a good handbook would keep many people from leaving after the first few days, because the game seems too complex to them.
EDIT: I'd wait with a re-release until most of the bugs that probably will come with SHiva are fixed, though.

I had a chat with some of the devs in iceland at the fanfest. They are happy with the way the game is growing but want to get Exodus released and stable.
They are also aware that several other on-line games are releasing expansion packs before Xmas.
It therefore makes sense to get Exodus out of the way and working and let the hype of the pre-xmas expansion pack release's die down. They said that they wanted to start an advertising campaign sometime early in the new year. They also want to tap into the huge asian market when they can get the typefaces and stuff sorted, proberably this time next year when Kali and the new asian bloodlines are released.
They got 53,000 subscribers (which around 15,000 are second/third accounts) by and large using word of mouth. So imagine what they could do with some advertising!!!!!
Last thing I/we want at the moment is a huge influx of newbs just as Exodus is released. But standby for an influx of returning players when Exodus is released and lots of newbs when the advertising starts in Feb/March next year.
