Edited by: Merdaneth on 24/11/2009 19:22:48 21:31 BattleStar Crusader begins to convince a militia fleet to 'x up'. Apparently there are some juicy targets around. Since forming fleets tends to take ages, I ignore the request and wait for more definitive intel.
22:08 Things are seeming to get a bit more serious. I join the Militia Vent channel and listen in. I keep patrolling the usual hotspots and notice a hostile fleet at the Kourmonen gate in Auga. I let them shoot at me for a while and meanwhile I hear the Amarr Militia fleet is pulling back from its position on the other side of the gate. Some militia members jump through to my side rather than listening to BSC command and the fleet is split up.
22:16 Battlestar is yelling at his fleet, wondering why there are 30 in fleet and only 16 with him (as usual really). I'm only listening in on voice and not in fleet, otherwise I could have pointed out to him he lost about 6-7 ships when pulling away from the gate 8 minutes earlier. I'm wondering if I should join the fleet by now, but decide to continue to harass the hostile fleet alone, trying to pick of stragglers and loners in the general confusion. In my experience, 3 out of 4 fleets don't get a fight anyway because one side eventually chickens out.
22:31 I continue skirmishing with the hostiles. A2M's Hurricane opens up on me in Auga but gives up after 50 seconds of ineffectual firing of his 425mm AC's while I lazily orbit the gate at 500m. No drones perhaps?
22:38 After warping back and forth a bit, I end up at the Auga gate in Kourmonen. There are several hostiles there, even more warping in. Armada114's Executioner puts a point on me and opens fire. None of his mates assist him, and 30 seconds later the gate is clear again with just my shields scratched a bit. I return fire and 5 seconds later the Executioner explodes. So much for that.
22:48 It seems like a fight is going to happen after all! The hostile fleet has been in Kourmonen, with most of them at the Kamela gate. Battlestar is raving about jumping into them even though the Amarr are outnumbered by the hostiles. I get an invite from Mitara of PIE for the fleet and accept.
22:50 Battlestar is jumping the fleet into Kourmonen and attacking. I'm still at the Auga gate and warp off, the Muninn of Curtiss Hawk who has been drifting some 60-80km of the gate now for some time scratching my shields a bit.
22:51 I set overview to fleet and see a huge amount of hostiles. I try to attack the enemy tacklers but fail to get near them. The lag makes it impossible for my AB Crusader to fly manually and intercept the MWD orbits of the hostile tacklers. I content myself with just shooting at the current primary, being Lewis Jonas Typhoon while Battlestar is nearly bursting a vein calling out targets.
22:52:37 Attila 39 opens fire on my Crusader with his Stabber. Being in a short range AB Crusader in a fleet battle always runs the risk with it of some people trying to make a quick kill out of me. Busy shooting the primary, and not yet receiving a lot of damage due to my speed, I do not yet notice this.
22:52:43 The Claw of Cressy Maximus puts his disruptor and 250mm Artillery on me. Fortunately, his speed an my sig and transversal means all his shots miss. I don't have armor damage yet. I notice him scrambling though.
22:52:52 The Typhoon is down and I switch targets to Attila's Stabber who was shooting at me. Orbiting him at 500m is relatively safer. Quickly I strip his shields and start on his armor.
22:53:01 I'm shocked from my reverie by the impact of a flight of Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile from the Drake of seseoB tearing into my armor. I activate my overloaded small armor repairer and hope it will absorb the damage for a bit while continuing laying down fire on Atilla's heavily plated Stabber.

22:53:06 JIm Hammer, the hostile Scimitar pilots sets his full flight of warrior II's on me. Since I don't have drones on overview and brackets disabled, I don't notice this at all. To me it just seems like the Stabber is suddenly hitting me instead of missing. My repairer is keeping pace with the damage for now, but only as long as my cap lasts.
22:53:31 My cap is almost empty and my armor is almost gone under the fire of three hostiles, and the Stabber is still at half armor, so I overload my AB and angle away from the fight, trying to achieve warp.
22:53:39 I shake the points on me and achieve warp.
22:54:15 During the warp I can regenerate some of my cap and repair a bit of armor, and warp back to the battle as soon as I drop out of warp.
22:55:03 I land next to Eeevelone's Caracal and tackle and engage her, knowing that Caracal shields tend to melt fast under my lasers.
22:55:13 Apparently Cressy Maximus has an eye out for me, as his Claw points me again and his artillery continues to fire at me ineffectually. The lag is a bit better, with many hostiles of the field, so I try to get within scram range of his Claw, but I fail completely to catch him.
22:55:33 Yarly has decided I'm his next primary and his Vagabond's Dual 180mm being to track me and a barrage of shells thunders at me, most missing.
22:55:42 l0nagan's Malediction adds to Yarly's shells by by launching a flight of Sabretooth Light Missiles at me. Why can't he just go and tackle some big ship of ours I wonder. However, my tank is holding for now, so not to worry yet.
22:55:51 Yarly has now managed to get his warrior II's on me as well, bringing to damage from an irritating to a lethal level and even Cressy Maximus in his Claw who has been firing on my for a minute now manages to land some hits.
22:56:10 Unable to tank anymore, I attempt to make another warp out by overloading AB and angling away from the thick of the battle. As before I succeed.
22:57:03 Repaired and at 60% cap again I re-enter the battle, which is still raging, with still lots of hostiles about.
22:57:15 Lag is noticably less, and I manage to get within scrambler range of Lewis Jonas of the Valklear Guard and his Rifter.
22:57:37 Lewis Jonas is fairly heavily tanked, fortunately my Pulse Lasers now how to handle a tank and he pops after 20 seconds of intense fire. I'm a bit amazed no hostile has fired on me yet.
22:57:44 My next target is Kei Nagase also in a Rifter and he is going down much faster than Lewis.
22:58:02 Yarly's Vagabond has found me for a third time and is firing at me again. How about shooting at the primary for a change Yarly?
22:58:05 I am still firing at Kei Nagase, but I switch my scrambler to Captain Vaguy's Ares, who I suddenly noticed not 5km away. He's going nowhere fast now. I switch my lasers to Captain Vaguy as soon as I achieve a stable orbit, and see he already has a sliver of structure damage. However, one moment later, to my amazement, his armor is back up to full. A Guardian is repping him! Quite an odd choice for a Guardian to be repping an Ares, but I'm confident in the damage output of my lasers.
22:58:18 Captain Vaguy's armor bounces back once more but then I got him and he pops. Almost simultanously Oica's Ares also opens up on me, joining my nemesis Yarly in their attempts on my poor Sader's life.

22:58:53 My on-board computer tells me the sad message: 'Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters requires 14.0 units of charge. The capacitor has only 0.2 units.' I'm out of cap and still being chased by Yarly and his buddies: both my AB and scram turn off, and I cannot help but be overtaken by the Vaga.
22:59:01 The last of my structure gone, my Sader pops. I hurry back to the station and reship in my Arbitrator. There were still plenty of hostiles around at this point.
23:02:30 By the time I warp back, the battle is as good as over. My Arbitrator manages to aid in killing an Astarte and a Rifter but my contribution wasn't really neccessary anymore.
All in all I found it an exciting battle. Lag was managable, except for the very start. And I benefit from a lack of Thrashers and/or Sabre's which tend to ruin the fights rather quickly, as being in an AB Sader in the thick of the fight tends to make you a tempting target. I constantly keep an eye on overview for who might be attacking me, since I need to maximize transversal against such targets if possible, but otherwise try to contribute where I'm most needed. Sometimes you are at half armor in an inty before you figure out who is shooting at you though, and even one discharge from a medium neutralizer during a battle can practically take you out of the fight, which fortunately didn't happen until the very end.
This time the Minmatar Militia had the numerical advantage and also the jump in advantage. Fortunately Battlestar really wanted a fight and decided to jump in anyway. It seemed that the hostiles suffered from a marked lack of focus fire. The fact that I have 11 parties on my killmail is quite telling. Why would over 20% of the hostile fleet target a single Crusader in the first few minutes of the battle, including a big ship like a Drake? I have no doubt that with better fire coordination from the hostiles that the battle would have gone much more evenly. With BSC yelling like a madmen at the comms, I don't think many in our fleet even thought about shooting at another hostile at first, hearing the primary over and over and over again :)
In any case, the PIE Killboard shows 39 kills to 1 loss (my own) thanks to my fellow Praetorians Ultra Power, Veshta Yoshida and Mitara Newelle. Aldrith Shutaq of PIE joined at the very end of the battle, at about the time I warped my Arbitrator in.

interesting read...
to be honest i don't understand why everyone is making a big fuss about this engagement. it was just another skirmish on the kourm-kamela front. they happen every day.
sometimes the minmatar win, sometimes the amarr win.
my side of the story: the FC asked for a couple volunteers to jump into kamela and shoot at anything that jumped through. i got to blast a couple scimis and instapoped a thrasher... also got to report on all the amarr re-shipping (as they well should... fighting 1 jump from their highsec has its advantages).
the minmatar killboard shows 28 losses and 18 kills. we got a good fight and had fun.

contender for dumb quote of the week, theres a reason both sides (yes minmatar too, our killboard pw is super sekrit being only passed out in restricted channels like militia chat!) comment on our killboard and the minnie board is fairly ignored in comparison. Hint: the reason is its more accurate |

Well, since Battlestar quoted 20 losses and Mr. Ukken quoted 18 kills I would say it is is the other way around .. seems to be a rather large discrepancy in listed losses on Matari board.
Not as if those ridiculous chest-beating numbers matter though, was a good engagement, even if it was a mess at times with comings and goings every which way
To think that a fight like that would have been instant disconnect for 50% of all involved previously .. manageable lag makes for better pew. CCP did something right

This isn't about kills and losses, but about how a fun fight was from the perspective of a close range inty pilot which isn't insta-popped by lag and a brace of destroyers.
Normally I don't post kills or losses on the Amarr board unless they are shared (other people can get my killmails this way). Most solo kills I have on the Amarr board come from Minnie's posting their losses on linked boards. ____

Nice report. Even tho it all ended real bad from my point of view.
Also shows one of the main problems i'm seeing with FW fleets. Focus fire. They just won't do it. It's hilarious.
And i'm jelous you stayed alive all the time, i usually get chased by drones right away when i'm in smaller ships. ----------------------------- Pew pew!
