Alienware laptop? Exspensive but its hard to find any other brand that makes a high end gaming laptop that can actually run games like a desktop.
Alienware pc? Drop about $600~1000 on a do it your self rig and get better performance.

overpriced, oversized peices of garbage. They are for rich people who are too snobby for manual labour.
if you want a gaming PC, do 2 hours of reading, go to your local Pc store/ebay/newegg and do it yourself.
you will save more than half your money than buying a branded PC and you have the joy of looking at and be proud you built it for your sole purpose

Edited by: Brujo Loco on 27/11/2009 03:37:06 Lemme tell you this, I was lately searching for a new laptop, and was about to shell out 3k on an Alienware laptop for the sheer joy of having an expensive "toy". Unfortunately I ended up buying a 47 inch LCD tv haha, so I have like a 1k left to buy me a ps3 and still hunting for bargains atm.
BUT, I will share this with you so you can make up your mind
www.alienware.com <--- you already know about it
www.sagernotebook.com <--- check them out
www.vodoopc.com <--- nice designs, dunno if they still ship them
www.avadirect.com <--- I like them, look robust
www.falcon-nw.com <---- The same guys that plant those little paper ads in gameboxes
www.pugetsystems.com <--- check their water cooling solutions ... and laptops :D
www.velocitymicro.com <---- moar stuffz!
www.xoticpc.com <--- hmmm, they look strangely ordinary
www.factorgaming.com <--- seems a sager reseller with special offers, might be worth checking them out
And for me, the best bang for the BUCK atm and in our current economic woes ...
ASUS!!!!!!!
Asus Notebooks can be bought here for your convenience check that beauty and compare the price to the others ...
Up to you to decice whats better and how much you want to spend on Looks mostly.
Everybody can mount up their custom built desktop gaming rig, but a laptop, thats another story. Go laptop> desktop, mobility is a MUST! , also remember that mos decent laptops come with Video/sound HDMI ports, so plug a wireles keyboard/mouse to your laptop and hook it up to any HDMI Plasma/LCD/LED TV and there you have your desktop. Laptops, specially powerhouse laptops are the way to go man.
If you really really want an Alienware laptop but wanna go budget, you can buy the chassis off the netz and custom build it yourself too if you like, just look around, several people selling their old alienware laptops, you can refurbish them to your tastes if you into that too. Since most parts are dell, they are pretty common to replace/swap.
If you insist on going desktop, Lemme tell you, Alienware cases are just a dream ... you can go bargain hunting too if you short on cash an buy them for cheapz and refurbish them too, dont remember if the new ones still use some of the odd internal trays that made customization a pain. Only saw one once inside and it was several years ago.
Hope this post was useful

I bought the parts for my computer, and built it myself, including a 21.5inch monitor, gaming keyboard, and gaming mouse, for US $1800. That was 5 months ago. As of THREE days ago, I customized an Alienware desktop for the hell of it, and to get an Alienware that matched the specs of my custom rig, it would have cost me around US $2500. With NO monitor and a cheapo stock keyboard/mouse. I bought all the parts from Newegg, they had the best prices on everything.
Just make sure the motherboard you buy actually supports the hardware you want to use... I made a mistake and bought a board that didn't support SLI, only Crossfire. And the mobo was only returnable for replacement.

Alienware used to be the pc to buy to game with, that is if you don't have the brains to build one yourself... Basically it was the ferrari of pcs.
Dell competed with alienware with some of their desktops by in large to no avail(in this analogy I will say dell is like ford). So dell simply bought out alienware, stuck their crap in the shell and priced it like an alienware.
Kinda like Ford buying our Ferrari and putting a ford v8 in all the models yet keeping the price up, it is basically just a ploy to get those that don't keep an eye on computer systems so that dell can make whopping amounts of money.
This is my understanding of it anyways.

I also vote that you either buy yourself the parts and build it yourself or have some friend do it for you. You could get a lot more out of a build for the amount of money that you would spend at a pro builder. Then again, ofc, if money is not an issue ( e.g., you are rich or you can write it off) and you don't have the aptitude and don't want to bother friends with it then sure, buy a complete comp. Obviously, they don't sell useless rigs.

I'd like to contradict that. My uncle once bought a top of the line dell machine for like 3500 bucks and while it had a superfast processor and lots of ram (those two parts probably constituted more than half the value of the thing), the motherboard was utter crap. They did't even bother to configure the RAM speeds and timings correctly. That combined with generic OS settings and occasionally a load of pre-installed **** software makes them a lot less fas than they could be.

That entirely depends upon your definition of Useless. Of course they don't sell completely useless gear, everything has a use, but Alienware are overpriced, and the only reason they still are today is because of the name.
Alienware by name, Alien Wares by nature.

Edited by: Gibbo3771 on 27/11/2009 17:06:33 Dont buy a Dell gaming desktop, seriously, there not as bad and overpriced as alienware but they still aint worth there money.
If you want an affordable gaming laptop the Dell XPS M1710 is VERY customizable and flexible in price. It is one of the few I would buy.
Honestly if you really are set on a gaming PC do some homework, building a PC from scratch is the easiest thing ever, now fixing/upgrading it is another thing but you will learn and gain experience from it.
Avoid Pc World/Comet/Curries/Asda(walmart?)/Dixons/Argos. Never buy from any of these. The little sideshop with the indian guy behind the desk is your best place but he will prob do his best to rob you as well and no that was not a racist remark. You know, thinking about most of the replies, and following the same utilitarian logic, as someone else mentioned before, everybody knows rolex watches are just plain lame, you see, you can buy like a casio one that does the same for like what? 10k USd$ less? not only that, but rolex ones are like ANALOG man, they cant play mp3s, you have to like wind them? and they are worth oOMGWTF ammounts of dollars you can use on other most important stuffz. YOU CAN EVEN BUY FAKE REPLICAS at like 5$ each!!!!
Luxury Items, wheter it be a generic clone mass produced in the same specs like Mac's Apples', fancy Cases that sport the Alienware logo or for that matter women if we want to go to that far, are in essence items that in most regards can be found way cheaper if you build them, buy them off used or replace with non brand items.
Utilitarian-Pragmatic Logic is something that is good and whatnot, but some people, enjoy spending their money on stuff that logically is worthless, can be found cheaper or is plain moronic and has no real use.
It's been a long time dream and goal in my life to actually own a Grand Complication watch for instance. The day I can own one means I have achieved several job/achievement/rewards/ in life. If I dont perhaps I will dream about it and move on, but the need is there, this is just an example. People strive to have stuff¿that is deemed expensive or good (best marketing ploy ever)because by extrapolation we associate people with those items as being good, its in essence human nature or more precise herd behaviour in a basic scale.
No matter how unique you want to be , you are still one more of the billions of people in the planet, and as perhaps a sociologist will explain better than me a humble psychologist, we still correlate to each other by simple yet subtle scales when doing social interactions. One of these is the things we own-want-wear-etc.
So yes, an Alienware is a moronic choice in terms of dollar efficiency, you are just buying the looks. But that¦s exactly what you want out of it, the gestalt of the concept.
Anyway, to each his casio¦s .
