I'll be hitting my x2 SP limit this weekend, having used it primarily for the various learning skills, and I'd like to go for a Covert Ops ship. I'm also planning on rounding out my Mechanic, Electronics, and Engineering skills since I statted to Int/Mem.
Is a Cov Ops boat worth it as a beginning route? I plan to skill Drones at least to a decent level first, so I can pilot an Imicus with 3 Hobs for low level missioning.

No. Covert ops ships are purely support ships, very useful in both PvP and PvE (exploration), but their near-zero combat capability means you need to get a proper combat ship first. ----------- FREE ABATHUR - HAVING GOOD 0.0 IDEAS IS NOT A CRIME.

Edited by: Zeerover on 28/11/2009 05:16:25 The covert ops would be a bad choice for any PvE fighting. You'd be better off with either a t1 cruiser ala Vexor, or an assault frigate like the Ishkur.

Good to know. How far can frigates take you, then, if you go for t2 and work on support skills? For missioning, is there a significant difference between training to get really good at frigates versus simply stepping up to progressively larger ships?
On the other side of the coin, what about PvP? Is there a difference in how long it will take to be effective using frigates vs skilling up towards BCs? I'm generally assuming solo with some occasional small gang roaming.

Frigates suck in PvE (except in the tiny minority of PvE content that only allows frigates to enter), because PvE is all about one thing: killing speed to maximize ISK per hour. Killing speed means DPS, and DPS means bigger ships, so you want to get into a Drake for level 3 missions ASAP, then move up to a Raven/CNR/Golem for level 4s as soon as you have your support skills ready.

Frigates are generally weak for solo PvP because they are too easily tanked. You're going to have very limited target options: other frigates, and the occasional low-skill NPC-ing T1 cruiser. However, they can be quite effective (and often necessary) in gangs as tacklers. ----------- FREE ABATHUR - HAVING GOOD 0.0 IDEAS IS NOT A CRIME.

get your basic skills up, then decide what kind of covops you'll be doing.
if a bomber you need to get your torp skills and missile support skills up.
for exploration, survey and scanning
for black ops... well, don't bother

I use an ishk in l3's and have an easy time doing it, frigs and their t2 counterparts are faster than cruisers, so if spawns are far apart it might save you some time, they also warp twice as fast.
That said, I am at about 4m sp, and still polishing out my support skills, cruisers might get you going a bit faster.
I do reccomend getting a nice amount of frigs to start gang pvping, they are cheap and can be fitted with mission leftovers if needed.
The covops I'd save for later, they are expensive and not really worth investing in until you have a clear goal for them.

Intell is very important in PVP. Even with very low skill, if you're a good scout with real life skills, if you can probe hostile ships... You'll be highly valuable in most of pvp fleet, and even respected for that. But you won't be on any killmail :)
I still think it's a good way to start group pvp, in low sec roams for instance.

Drakes are not the only L3 option and Raven/CNR/Golem are a massive waste of SP if you want to fly other ships.
Amarr, Gallente and even Minmitar all have viable PvE options.
If you're innovative then you don't actually need to run missions as a covops pilot, a friend is making plenty of isk without any combat using his covops. You do obviously need a bit of imagination to think up ways to get people to pay you to use those skills though... but it isn't that hard.
If you do go that route I highly recommend the Minmitar covops as it's the fastest which is useful for supplying warpins on moving enemies while still cloaked.

This.
Scouts are always needed by any gang.
Covert ops despite what most will say, can have combat potential. Stealth bombers for instance, can slaughter industrial ships under the noses of dozens of allys.
you can check my killboard for plenty of examples of industrial kills in busy space.

Basically it all boils down to what you want to do.
PvP wise, a specialty in cov ops is going to lead you to doing a lot of scouting, scanning and support with almost no direct combat. Certain flavors of PvP require more of this particular type of support than others, so it's a viable way to go if that's what you want to do. You can build off these skills to Recon ships which are almost always welcome in any kind of PvP gang imaginable and must more directly involved.
However, if you're the type that wants to be in the thick of things and getting your hands dirty, then no, a cov ops would most likely not be your cup of tea. For more direct interaction I'd recommend looking into tackling (interceptors) or for even more, battlecruisers.

Edited by: Dodgy Past on 29/11/2009 22:51:13 What you really mean is that it's very bad for your epeen since a good covops pilot should never appear on a killmail.
The actual process of getting the warp in is pretty stressful and you may well be right in the thick of things as they they kick off, then you get to pilot your way out of the way and watch the battle from a safe distance.
As someone else has said, the crossover to Stealth Bombers isn't a big deal and they are pretty handy ships as well.
I fly a covops on an alt and enjoy it immensely.
