Nope, nothing mentioned about damage.

Hm. Can't see blowing up roids working, for the reasons outlined by others - people would just go wrecking other alliance's belts.
*However* what might work is an overpowered mining laser, one with say 10x the roid destruction rate of a mining laser but one which annihilates rather than collects the ore. So for example you could slag a big annoying Veld roid in 5 minutes instead of 50 minutes - which would be worthwhile for mining ops - but emptying an opponent's belts would take too long to be worth it for casual griefers. (But might still be a valid tactic for a serious operation - and why not?)

Originally by: Lygos If you blew up roids, and I recall firing on a few at one time or another, they would just get cycled immediately through the backend and pop up somewhere else. Probably in the same system. It would be nice to shape fields quickly for warp paths though by eliminating some monster Velds. Biggest one I've seen so far is only +16km diameter, but I am on the lookout for bigger ones.
IŠve seen roids being so big that when you warped out and zoomed all the way out you were still inside the roid. damn scordite invasion back then.. whole belts were never mined becurse you could not enter it whitout hitting a roid..

you obviuosly missed the days when roids never stopped growing i remember coming to asteriod feilds that had only 2 or 3 roids in them all veld and all 150-200km around also if you busted the veld ones there were really big omber roids inside of them.
oh and haven't mined in ages but it would be nice if the veld roids weren't so big i hate getting stuck while farming npc's |

Mining Crystals
An ammo type for mining lasers that adjust the rate, and effiency, of mining lasers. The standard mining crystal mines at 100% the base rate, with 100% effiency. The improved crystal would mine, for example, +20% more ore per minute. 10% goes into the cargo, and 10% is wasted. So you get more ore per minute. But the roids get emptied even faster.
At least one crystal would have a 0% effiency, with a 1000% rate boost. Meaning that is exhausts roids really fast, but puts nothing in the hold :)
Miners could just carry sets of crystals around to fine tune their mining ops. Mine the common roids quickly with low effiency beams. The rarer stuff gets the slow, high effiency beams.

Having mines that can dislocate or vapourize asteroids would be good, then you could send in demolition teams ahead of a mining expedition to clear the path.
That or mine the competitions belts.

Okay, fine. . . but then I want a missile that will cause a star to nova and wipe-out its entire system.

Actually, with the advent of MWDs, you shouldn't be too frustrated with roids in your path. You can just fly around em. Anyone remember being stuck in densely packed roids and not being able to move??
But i agree with what you say about the "buffer zone" around roids... Seems to me like some roids have a force field or aura around them that you just bump off with your ship, and it IMHO just too large. The Devs could have cut the minimum range to the roids a bit more.
Damage from roid (and other object) bumpage would be a feature that we could implement in the future. Would definetly make things a little more realistic!
