Edited by: Kemisi on 30/11/2009 18:36:24 This has got to be a basic, previously-asked question - but I couldn't find the answer after a couple search attempts.
I have a mining-transport-trade alt, to use in support of my PVP character and to provide some variety. I'm not hard-core enough to want to mess with using two characters simultaneously. The alt is used to mine when I don't want to PVP, to transport for my PVP character (especially during war time), do most of my trading activities, etc.
When mining, up to now I've been mining and accumulating raw ore until I have enough to fill my freighter. I then freight the ore to a system where I can sell the ore for a good price.
I've done some quick calculations, and the additional ISK I would make by training perfect refining skills and selling refined minerals instead of raw ore seems minimal. Does anyone disagree with this? How profitable (purely from the standpoint of selling raw ore vs refined minerals) is perfect refining?
Other than refining skills, I'll have trained everything else I want by the end of my subscription period. I'm trying to decide if it is worth additional $$ to extend my subscription and train refining skills before transferring the alt to my main account.
Thanks for you thoughts......

Other than the slight profit you mentioned selling the minerals vs. the ore, the biggest factor would be volume. If you are having to move the ore over long distances, the reduction in hauling might be worth it.

It really depends on if you are getting good prices for raw ore. Some manufacturers pay good prices to ensure a steady supply of low-end minerals. But those good prices can vary from region to region.
It is always good to try to figure out what you can get for your ore by refining it yourself. If you don't want to mess with complicated formulas, you can always just take a large stack of ore and see what you could get for refining it. (You can cancel the refine after you see the numbers.)
Make sure you note the numbers in all three columns: "You receive" is what you can sell; "We take" is a function of your standing with the corp; and "Unrecoverable" is based on your refining skills and the efficiency of the station refinery.
Even if you get your skills up, you could still be losing 5% if you don't have standing with the corp.
