Hi guys, I recently came back to EVE and am trying to decide which race's ships to focus on. I'm looking at everything BS and below because while I might fly a carrier eventually I have no intention of flying any other caps. I'm probably going to end up doing a lot of combat and maybe a little bit of exploration, but no mining/industry.
I really like carrier-esque ships like the Vexor, Dominix and Arbitrator. Is there any glaring reason I should take Amarr over Gallente? |

Do you plan doing fleets? If your long term goal is a carrier then there's no better choice than the Archon currently. Archons, Guardians and Abaddons are almost mainstays IMO. Can't go wrong with those.

Small gangs yes, but any sort of large fleet engagements probably not until I have a carrier. |

Amarr is just flat out better than gallente at this point, more damage, stronger tank, better T2 ships. Abbadon, Zealot, and guardian are pretty much the mainstay of armor tanked PvP ships currently.
And lets face it, Amarr have fricking lazors man. |

For solo to about 3 in gang I would go with gallente. There are very few decent amarr solo ships. Gallente has a few decent ones.
For large fleets I would go with Amarr.

I prefer Gallente ships in general, but that is because drones are nice, then again the arbitrator/curse/pilgrim and Gila are all also very nice and not Gallente, however no one has a real equivalent for the myrmidon or ishkur. Blasters also do great damage.
However, I would have to recommend Amarr over Gallente, while I love my active tank bonuses, generally speaking a passive tank will win more fights, tracking disruption is far more effective than sensor dampening in most situations, and I feel the t2 lineup amarr has is just better. While the Ishtar is great the demios isn't something I am fond of and the ishtar seems to not nearly have enough CPU. The Sac may be slow, and the Zealot may not have drones, but in their respective roles I think they are better ships. Also Gallente commandships, while high on the DPS front don't really compare to Amarr commandships, that and everyone likes an armor bonus.
That being said, train amarr then cross train Gallente, you want gunnery, armor, and drone skills for both, so why not? Only thing you might "waste" is missile skills which Gallente really doesn't make much use of, while Amarr has several missile ships. |

I have to choose Amarr, their ships are just more versatile. |

Yeah I fly both myself. I like the Gallente frigate line very much. The Dominix is a fine ship as can be the Megathron in some situations. The Myrmidon is probably my second favorite battlecruiser, slightly ahead of the Harbinger. |

with amarr you can 0.0 blob, nanofaggotry and regular lowsec roams/piracy so it's your best option after minmatar, with gallente you're good too, but you effectively cut your options to lowsec
if you want to combine PvP and PvE then you should go with Gallente, especially for exploration, arbi/pilgrim are nice, but they deal very low dps, other ships can't choose damage exept for missile boats so with amarr ships you've got proper resistances vs angels but you deal em damage, you end up with either very low tank or very low DPS
for gallente pve ships, they can kite with drones and can always get close with blasters to take down heavily tanked ships, the proteus configures very well for covops exploration, it has great tank, can run a mwd easily, can field 5 drones where other ships can't and breaks stuff easily with blasters, vs a tengu, it has to get close but deals more dps overall, is alot faster and tanks more |

I'd like to note that amarr has at least one ship that is both good at solo/small gang and is actually a drone boat! I present you The Curse. Also Armageddon can field full flight of heavies (one of three T1 bs that can do that). Ah, you seek meaning?-áThen listen to the music, not the song. |

hmm. can anyone say Archon?
You did mention that you wanted to get into a carrier eventually.
Also, there isn't any reason that you can't do both races, or perhaps amarr and minmatar. Every good BS pilot should be well trained in two if not 3 races. Its long term, i know. Go with amarr and down the road train gallente or minmatar as well.

You had better mean tier 1 and not tech 1 (Geddon, Dominix, Phoon, Metathron). |

If you're really into drone boats, I'd go for Gallente first - Arbitrators and its T2 variants are good drone boats, but you're lacking drone frigs, drone BCs and drone BSs - so after having the Arbi-line skilled out, you're facing a gap until you fly an Archon (and it's not that much used in pvp as a carrier in the literal sense - more as a logistics ship). morons-áare recruiting. I wouldn't pick Archon over Thanny for carrier. As far as blob pvp, both handles competently. Archon is better, but not by a lot. In pve, Thanny is the far superior choice. By going Archon, you'd be losing a lot of isk-making potential for comparably small gain in blobbing.
Then, there's the issue of Gallante taking full advantage of the drone skills you'd be training while on the way to carrier. Amar only has the Arbitrator. Going Gallante also opens up Guristas possibilities, which are impressive as far as droneboats go. Lvl4 Caldari frigate or cruiser don't take long to train. You won't need lvl5. |

This. Amarr are extremely difficult to use in small gangs, they make fantastic fleet ships though, anything from HAC size to supers. Gallente on the other hand are fantastic skirmish ships, high DPS, versatile fits, and they have the Domi. Reason enough to train both. |
