Apocrypha was simpler in that we added wormholes and we added tech 3. We had to refactor some old code in Apocrypha but we were mostly adding new code.

Well, back in '83 when I was copying 5 pages of code from a computer magazine for a space invaders clone on my Vic-20, it took me a few hours to load that in, then press record on the tape player, then debug. I bet it is easier now, so what is taking so long?

Firstly CCP's infrastructure is far more complex than the other games on the market.. so I can give them a break for needing sometime to roll out these changes.
Secondly does it really matter if you cant play EVE for a day while its being sorted? I know its great and everything but there must be something else you can do with your time :)

I would say that deploying the code on the servers is pretty easy, shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.
But that is not all.
It needs to be tested, fixed, tested again etc.
Also CCP needs some buffer time in case that something goes wrong and they need to hotfix stuff. Or do you want to have a 8 hour downtime followed by days of unannounced shutdowns, crashes and so on?
I prefer that they take the server down a full day or even two, do their stuff until it is done and then start up the whole thing as smoothly as they can. Anything else doesn't make any sense to me. |

i really hope what you say has been done weeks ago and extensively been tested on sisi. now do an svn upd, start the services and control once again all your changes work. start up logon server services and we are good to go. easy?

You are spot on. Actually deploying the server code is a 5 minute operation. But creating the client install and patches and uploading them to our CDN is about a 6 hour operation. And updating the database and migrating data is a long task - we actually started migrating the mail more than a week ago. And there is testing, lots of it.

Nice. Thanks for the insights.
As a computer developer myself that has to work with large DB imports and exports, I can attest to the fact that it can take some time. If the DB migration is only about 6 hours, as Explorer said, consider yourself lucky. They have some good coding for that. Unfortunately, I also have to work with idiot programmers that make a data import process run 19 hours when I can recode it and get it to run in 1 - 4 hours, depending on the size and current server load. And this is only working with a few GB of data.
And then, if CCP is doing it right, which I think they are, there should be integrity tests run that crunch through the DB data and makes sure the import ran well. My company would take a good day or two to find and fix all of the data integrity problems in an import (and they don't listen to me or my boss about any of it :S ).
And all of that is just for the DB stuff that I have experience with. No doubt they're also logging in and running at least sanity tests on the systems. If they're upgrading any hardware in the meantime, too, that they don't put in the patch notes, that'll take some time to install, test, and verify.
So less than a day for a patch like this is decent.

Fact is I seen many other games do larger amount of changes than what CCP is doing and in less time, most being 4 to 6 hours. In those 4 to 6 hours, entire new lands, worlds, dungons, ect was put in place, and server stability and other testings completed.
CCP from what I can see is just so dated that maybe they forgot the technoligy that was used to create this game in the first place.
