I wonder if the OP understands how fun this is for probably 95% of the EVE subs. Keep it com'n Hardcover!! I think you have a legit grip and should seriously get into a whine. Come on man is that the best you can do?

Edited by: Mareck001 on 01/12/2009 15:37:38 Don't feel bad, if it takes them 19 hrs to deploy, 6 for you to download patch, 2hr to update client(just to find out the patch is POOH), and then 6 hrs to reload WHOLE client , 2 hrs to re-install said client... You have 2 days gone...and STILL a slew of patches to go

real situation is it's party time in Iceland, CCP out on the razzle last night, timeline thus:
05:00 Roll home after 10 hours of ****ing it up in Reykjavik's finest strip clubs. 13:00 Awake with grade 5 hangovers 16:00 Several pots of coffee later head to town for "breakfast" 18:00 Roll into work for post mortem of previous night 20:00 Start updating servers 21:00 Stick it live and let customers do the testing

Hackers, you mean. Expert hackers, who were somehow able to get into the EVE source code and CCP's servers. How else would they know what deploying an EVE expansion entails?
Its cracker at lest get that right, hackers are the good guys
If you have programmed somthing more then 200 lines you know that its hard to perdicted everthing that can go wrong with software/hardware as big as eve.
And if you think its that easy why dont you make a better space mmo and show ccp how it is done.

Anyone else ever notice, how everyone in this game is a computer expert?
Anyone else finding it quite difficult to believe that every self-proclaimed "IT guy, network guy, programmer, etc" has ever even actually had a job?
Im sure the portion of "computer people" to the rest of us is higher in a game like this than in a random sample of people just selected at say, Wal Mart, but cmon...admit it. Most of you do not work, a good portion of those that do are in fields having little to do with computers (unless you count the drive-in window headset) and a few of you actually do what you claim.
Sales associate at Best Buy does NOT make you an "IT guy", btw.
/rant off.

You're right OP, they finished the update at about 3am and now they are all down the "Frog and Dragon" pub, drinking mulled rasberry wine and singing Viking lullabies.
At some point one fo them will wake up from his drunken slumber and turn on the servers again.
We live in hope.

Yeah, I've noticed a higher concentration of computer people than I expected, as well, not just on the forums, but just chatting with my friends in my corps.
But yeah "program analyst" here, though it's really "software engineer" like my last job, but this company names things funny.

Especially when the White Wolf mooks keeps taping over your patch with Coldplay albums.

ah but is that the misused (as in he writes software) 'software engineer' or the professionally qualified with a certified Soft. Eng. degree? Legally you are only a software engineer if it is the latter.

I haven't bothered to get a certification saying I know how to do what they pay me to do, so the former, I guess. But what the heck is "program analyst" supposed to mean? I don't analyze the programs, I code and debug them!

It doesnt has one. If you do find a file like Boot.ini on Vista, delete it immediatly, its a virus that will copy itsself to your brain and turn you into a brainless zombie that plays Hello Kitty Online all day long. I'm not entirely sure that's true. You are what your job title says. A high school math teacher who graduated with a physics degree is a math teacher, not a physicist. Also, the converse is not true: just because I graduate with a computer science degree does not make me a computer scientist.

Software Developer would be the normal term for someone who designs, implements & tests software. Program Analyst is a left over term from the late 70's where the programmer was also usually the business analayst and before there were any IEEE acredited software qualifications. So before starting any coding they would have to analyse the business requirements before attempting to define the software requirements. That's usually done by a dedicated business analyst these days depending on how much a firm follows best practice.
The thing about 'Software Engineer' is it is a professional qualification, the same as Civil Engineer or Doctor, they are protected in law.

That's not true in the case of certain Professional Qualifications. My friend's job is 'Clinical Development Manager' However since she also has a pHD in physics, she is also a Dr. She can call herself either - one is her job, one is her professional qualification.
If you graduate with a computer science degree it makes you a 'BSc Computer Science' so you can legally call yourself Seth Ruin BSc Comp Sci. if you really wanted to.
I am currently a self employed web-designer, however I am still also a qualified Soft Eng (Did it for 15 years after the four years of study, but ill health meant I had to find something I could do from home)
You cannot call yourself a Civil Engineer simply because you work on a building site, no matter what your role entails.

Edited by: Moneo on 01/12/2009 17:49:45 Since programming is mostly a non-physical process of creation, everyone can get involved very easily and quickly. So there are a lot of people running around who did their "C++/Java/C#/PHP/... in 24 days" and think they are a programmer... not to mention an actual software developer/designer/engineer/architect.
I work in a software department, and I hate it when we have to clean up or refactor after exactly those "<bla> in 24 days"-people hired from elsewhere. The worst: dumping a whole system set up by some loud mouth and redo it from scratch... ARGH.
So yeah... what did I wanna say? Yeah: Well, I write my "Hello World! in uuuuuhhh... PERL within a few minutes or even seconds, after that I come here and shake my head upon those total software n00bs at CCP, taking more than 12h for deploying a patch to a system that is only slightly higher in complexity than my previously mentioned program. So open up Tranquility already, dammit!

Blizzard doesn't need to shut down one of the largest servers in the world every time they want to change something.
