Servers don't need to be online to start the massive download. They still have the old client on download.

I think OP should just download latest patch wherever you can find it. Install that sucker and keep spamming logins to see if you can be the first person to play dominion on TQ! Go for it mate! Oh and if something about boot.ini comes up, don't worry about it. It just means you're the special one for getting the early, special edition patch. Only losers wait till 21:00 as per CCP's announced time, trust me on that. Waiting is for losers anyway.
/end generic copy paste post to all whiners

Please be patient while our engineers prepare a final patch for Dominion. We will be sure to let you all know when it is available

I can almost see the benefit from this. By releasing the patch when the servers come back up they can stagger the connecting clients naturally instead of having a wall of 50k+ people attempting to connect in the first five minutes.
While some would say "But this clogs up the download server!", I don't agree. They've moved most of their patching to include their download servers and have also included it as a torrent file. Overall that would put more of the bandwidth usage on the users willing to use the torrent and less on CCP.
I think this is a great stability move for them
Also, it means they can include any last-minute patches that would have normally created an unstable release. ---------

It doesn't have to be. I doubt the art assets, sounds and music (which probably accounts for most of those 500MB) are going to change much between now an then. They could have released those days ago without appying them yet. We'd only have to download the changes they've made since then again.
Maybe it would be too much effort with their current patcher.

When it is finally released, does anyone know where the Eve Client will download it to?
I run Eve on 2 PC's, and if I can avoid downloading the patch on both (and instead copy it across the network) that would be great!

Should be able to get the download here and install it from USB, CD, or over a network. http://www.eveonline.com/patches/patches.asp |

If I were in charge at CCP and I read this; I would notice a pixel in one of the blueprint icons that needed to be a shade lighter which would need to be fixed and we would have to start another patch build. Just to spite you.

You all do realize that patches/releases need to be tested first. That is why we have Singularity... just adding a untested change could cause disaster (but would actually explain a lot of the recent unexpected reboots). |

Why? It's easy:
If the download is available right now, when Tranquility opens everyone will be ready to start playing and TQ will screw up by the massive amount of login people, that is why, probably, CCP will choose to wait until the last moment to make the download available, so when TQ opens, half the people will still be downloading the patch. It's better to overload the download server than Tranquility.

They're not software engineers. Literal manly wrench-wielding engineers. Everyone knows that the server farm actually harnesses the power of steam.

I downloaded EVE via Steam... I wonder if I get the update automatically somehow, or do I need to update is manually? I have 6.14.101786 at the moment.

Ah yes, the fatal pixel of game breaking doom. If you don't have your bug hunters rigorously test every pixel, the game will flop.
