My Coercer Fit I am considering whether I should fly a Coercer or a Thrasher in FW (Amarr militia). I have the skills to fly either one. I am drawn immediately towards the Coercer because of aesthetics (the golden fleet is beautiful), but if I'm going to be flying a fragile gunship I want to make sure I pick the one that's best suited for the job.
The job in question is killing frigates as efficiently as possible either solo or in a small gang, and getting out of the area as soon as there's something big enough to toast my untanked ship. I'd like to get the opinions of people who've actually flown the ships in Amarr/Minmatar faction warfare area, especially if someone has experience with both ships.
Thanks in advance!

Whilst not always true, the Thrasher tends to be the more versatile destroyer for PvP. The problem encountered with the Coercer is its obvious lack of mid slots; definately a case of MWD or die. However, while Shield buffered Trashers will beat the hell out of any frigates it can get its claws into, the Coercer makes a better sniping platform. If you're rolling in fleets then setup for anti-frigate on your overview, stay aligned and get out the moment you start taking damage. With T2 Pulses or Beams this ship can be a nasty surprise for Interceptors/AFs that arent paying attention.

I'm not familiar with the T2 weapons fits with the coercer, but don't it's mid slots interfere with ability to get a lock at distance?
When I was fitting and flying sniper thrasher fits in FW the usual mid layout was:
mwd, sensor booster, targeting comp.
Depending on the typical target and the experience of the expected opponents I'd ether go for a maximum gank or a tracking version fit. The heavy tracking version was specifically to be able to get tracking on interceptors and had the nice ability to hit an mwd'ing interceptor orbiting at 20-30km, the gank version was for handling AF and other destroyers. Neither fit had problems with T1 frigates of course.
The good thing for the coercer is that in a sniping role you're not expected to have tackle modules so the lack of mids is not as critical in the sniping role for the coercer. Targeting I would assume is more of an issue.
Now learning how to fly a sniping destroyer - that's a whole different ball o wax...

No wrong choice here tbh! If its about killing t1 frigs the coecer can do it in 2 - 3 volly! Mwd might be of more use but you may come to the same conclusion in time...

!Thrasher!
Coercer are only us full for snyp ... if that..
If you get you core skills up, thrashers have some interesting fits you should consider for frigate popping. Gank with auto cannons (150's to save grid) and here comes the fun stuff -over sized modules-and good use of actually having mid slots- throw a medium shield extender and a 10mn afterburner on it. and of coarse a scram, (yes 10mn ab yes it fits.) and on lows, 2 shield power relays. for rigs lop on 2 of your choice :core field extender or pergers, (depending weather you want more buffer or more recharge rate)
you now have a dessy that is not so fragile, can tank t1 frigates, and eat them for breakfast, great tracking, and does about 1 km a second for speed with no bloated sig radius cuz ur using a ab not mwd. I pop frigates with ease, and can pop most cruisers as well cuz they cant really track you, just remember to pop there drones, those are youre only real threat. Fun ship fun fit. Play with it, love it. :D

I'm very surprised noone has mentioned the arty thrasher for lolpopping frigs. High alpha for a destroyer can one or two shot most frigs.

Edited by: Davina Braben on 02/12/2009 01:35:27 Coercer does really nasty damage out to a pretty good range with Scorch. That's with short range guns so you can still track up close, unlike artie which leaves you basically helpless point blank.
The big downside is you can't have a speed mod and tackle fitted so it's a gang ship only in my opinion.
Thrasher is a nice ship too. It's more generally useful and has 8/3/2 config so you can fit tackle (kind of a big deal for solo). ACs lack the range of pulse lasers though (maybe they're better with a TE now?). Artillery leaves you vulnerable to scram fitted ships getting under your guns.
I like the Thrasher and it's obviously the boat of choice solo. In a gang though the Coercer is better at projecting DPS. I tend to fit an MWD instead of a tackle mod.
