I've been playing about a month and a half now and thought I'd try the new-fangled Fleet Finder. The problem is: I can't find anything. What are the standings based on and how to do I increase them? :P

Standings in the fleet finder are standings between play corps/alliances and such.
Give it time, it will prolly take some time before people really start getting to use the fleet finder outside of alliances and corps. ____________________________________________ When going to a party with wine, women, and song. Always acertain the vintage of the first two. |

Random people who want to get together in a fleet and do some missions? I thought that's what the fleet finder was for.

Same problem here, is there a default filter against neutral people who aren't a member of my alliance or something? I find it hard to believe that not a single person in all of EvE has an open fleet...

Firstly, it only applies to the region you're currently in - so it's "not a single person in your region"
Secondly, successful eve players are only slightly more paranoid than a dog with 8 tails in a tapdance studio. Inviting random strangers into your fleet tends to be a no-no on general principal. ----------------

In low security space, sure. In high security space, what are they going to do? Suicide gank me in what would require at least a battleship class, or tech 2 cruiser +, to be able to break my drake's tank? And in the amount of time before concord gets there.
There's no real danger in high-sec space unless you're flying something EXTREMELY profitable. And even then... (this is something I highly disagree with, safe zones with CONCORD guards that spawn and can't even be targeted).

As far as I can tell, the fleet finder does nothing for random people.
To see a fleet in the fleet finder, the fleet creator needs to have either set a positive standing to you. Or you need to be in the same corp or alliance.

Nope...Definitely not.
Fleet finder is for corp/alliance members (or groups of blues/friends) to find fleets consisting of each other. For example, it's for random Suddenly Ninjas Members who want to get together and a fleet and salvage your missions.

Indeed. It does nothing for the lone wolf to temporarily find allies to hunt with.

I've looked into the fleet finder briefly as we often form fleets of 'randoms'. All of our classes are composed of fee paying students from a variety of corporations and alliances.
At this stage it doesn't look like it will be much help as setting standings for all our students would be a major hassle for the directors (then resetting again after class). As our class fleets are at publicly known times and we've been known to shoot people from time to time, the chance of having people with evil intentions joining is fairly high, so setting a free invite is out.
I do like the new "re-join fleet if you disconnect and reconnect in less than 2 minutes" feature though - yet to try it myself, but it does sound good.

Seems kind of lame. It would be a lot better if it let you search out random fleets. :P

It'd be an intel tool then. I'm sure that would've worked out badly.

No, we really need a local which also tells who's fleeted with eachother and works for whole EVE, not just the current system...

Oh and I have the filter set to 'all', not 'region'.
Um..if you invite said BS or T2 cruiser into your fleet they can shoot you w/ no concordination. That is why people are paranoid about fleeting up with random people.

No. The recent (but not working anymore) trick was to invite you and a wartarget, so the wartarget could shoot you since you were in a war-gang.
The "you can legally shoot whoever is in your fleet" thing has been changed several years ago.

I stand corrected, I was not aware of that. That was the going scam when I was a nooblet just starting out in the game. I only fleet w/ alliance mates anymore.

Actually 'lofty' was well and kicking just a year ago, I should know since I was victim of this scam when I was still a noob 3-months in the game. It has now been changed so that only your own corp mates can shoot you without being concorded when in fleet with you.

I do not believe that since I witnessed some "incidents" being in fleets with non-corpmates way longer than a year ago. Both me getting globally flagged accidentally shooting wingmen (fortunately in low sec) and a wingman accidentally shooting me and getting blown up by Concord.
In fact when I started playing like 3 years ago one of the first things I heard from a fleet member before applying to his corp was a don't shoot me or you'll get pwned by sentries while messing around with him in a fleet.
Btw. this is going to get way OT .
Edit: Also if being in fleet or not doesn't matter as long as you're in the same (not npc) corp.

It would only work for fleets which have it set to "public".
Simple enough.

What are you talking about?
You cannot attack fleet members without being concorded, unless they are in your corporation (which you won't need a fleet to attack them in the first place). The only exception is if you are in low security space.
High security space is, like I said, almost 100% safe. Being paranoid there is not a requirement for survival anymore.

I just think there should be a public fleet finder tool. If you're too paranoid to use it then don't advertise and don't use it. :P A lot of people would benefit from this. If you get ganked by some jerk, you move on. Just like every other instance of everything in EVE.

I'd really like the fleet finder to actually help find a fleet for you. When I first read about the fleet finder the first thing was that finally there is a tool which makes it easy and possible to find people who want to do similar stuff.
Here are few proposals from me how to improve: - make it possible to advertise your fleet by dragging it on the chat like you can do with items - make it possible the fleet to create a short info text what kind of people they are looking for for the fleet along with what they are doing, like mission, pvp or just laidback idling and random joke with a pun - fleet can be set open and closed. Once closed the fleet finder doesn't find it anymore. Also make it easy to see when fleet is open so you don't forget it open - bigger buttons on the fleet screen. I just hate small buttons, hard to see, hard to hit fast etc.
It's a nice idea but it could be more open to play with it :)

Does it work in it?
If so, there's still the problem of actually having to quit your own corp to get anything near the semblance of a global fleet finder.
