I searched and could not find a CSM post on this topic
I would like to Propose for further discussion the Battle recorder. I forward ninjaholic's thread in features thread as it contains all the information needed.
Battle recorder
A summary:
A battle recorder that retains info on ship actions, modules etc, that does not record audio and video itself, but reproduces it within an eve client or similar program (if eve client itself can not be rigged (pun) to do this. )
I request the CSM and all interested in such a recorder to throw their support behind this, and please encourage CCP to place this firmly on their develpment future

This is a good idea and if it could be done without massive server overloading it would be a very useful tool, for newscasts or for movie making. The ability to view a battle from any view and full camera movements would be uber. It was on my agenga but as I haven't managed to make it into the CSM we will have to find someone to support this idea for us if it could be viable.

Definitely.
That feature is pretty standard for the arena type FPS games. No additional server strain as it can be done entirely client side. The entire scene can be (re)constructed with the data sent from/to the server, so only this needs to be recorded to a file. The biggest effort would be the creation of a player for those files. Add controls for advanced camera movement + scripting, as well as the ability to render frames to file... that would be moviemakers dream :)

Definitely like the idea. Less overhead than fraps or other screen-capture tools. Theoretically, it should be relatively easy to implement too.

Very intreguing feature. FRAPS adds lag to a degree which comprimises PVP performance on many people's machines. If this can be done in-client without a similar drawback, I think the benefits to the player base (especially us CEO types) and CCP's marketing efforts would be worthwhile. ---

I also believe that this would be in CCP's interrest in terms of getting more players, and more player satisfaction. One of the things that make my hairs stand, is watching awesome EVE videos (wish evetube came back)
Videos for recruitment, videos to show how awesome our game really is, videos that make people feel as part of the eve community!

I'm sure that the recording tool would add 'some' extra load to a CPU but for most systems able to run EVE now, I believe it will be a barely noticeable feature. To be honest, it does depend entirely on how much information really needs to be processed. And isn't all this information already cached or loaded somewhere? Shouldn't be any major task to get this into a data file for later retrieval. But I could be biased, and seeing it from one angle.
Only one way to know for sure. Get one of the developers to talk to the code monkeys about it, and give us that feedback! They would know more than anyone else how much extra strain on the client this would place, if any at all!

CCP recently posted a tweet asking if people recorded their eve battles. I'm sure I'm not the only person who would if they could.
Hopefully, a battle recorder would be far less demanding on CPU than running a capture utility like fraps. Additionally, I hope you would be able to play eve in low detail (important for fleet fights) and then later playback the battle, with the battleplayer, in awesome high detail. |

Edited by: Presidente Gallente on 02/03/2010 09:19:47 The basic Battle Recorder doesn't need much. Just recording the script what allows to edit that with a camera tool and client playback. Export to AVI uncompressed or as a pic sequence with a separate audio file. Period.
The top future feature could be a post-renderer for movies in breathtaking cinematics quality with advanced shader effects and visual effects, super-hi-res textures and incredible model details.
The usual CCP promo-videos show that there must still existing a recorder tool.

Quote: The CSM inquired about the possibility of a battle recorder, a tool that stores the data stream from the server which would enable re-rendering of events and therefore help with videos. CCP explained that this is technically possible and actually exists as an in-house tool. However, quite a bit of development time is needed in order to release it to players. Itęs therefore a question of prioritization.
From: http://www.eveonline.com/council/transcripts/2010/CSM_CCP_Meetings_18-20_02_2010.pdf, page 14, paragraph 2.
Words fail me for how truely awesome this is! This implies that it is indeed planned to release this tool to the players!

TBH, this would save me about a year worth + render time making the video I'm working on. I'd just need to figure out how to manually script the ships and battles :|

On one hand I love watching EVE movies and a 'battle recorder' would allow much improved presentation.
On the other, I can't help thinking that this would have the potential to be seriously exploited in the same way that Bacon used the logserver information. ...
