Quentin, I know exactly how you feel but let me tell you a little story that might change your mind...
Back in 2003 I was a fresh faced Minmatar, in a Probe, mining Veldspar in Ammold. I wasn't alone in the belts I was working; there were other miners/haulers coming and going, and evil people who would try and steal ore (because back then you didn't get a criminal flag for looting).
One day the fella mining next to me struck up a conversation. It turned out he was a recruiter for a corporation called Spirit of Nemesis. He had noticed how hard I had been working since I started and asked if I wanted to sign up: I accepted.
A couple of mining ops and a corporate ship building program later I had my first Rupture. It was sooooo shiny... so what do you think I did then? Why combat missions of course!
Everything was peachy until I moved up to a L3 Republic Fleet agent in Auner. I was blissfully unaware that a certain (now infamous) pirate corporation going by the name of mOO were busy discovering the art of low sec ganking.
When it happened I did not have the money to replace the cruiser, it was all tied up in skills I had brought. Two months into playing I was about to lose my first valuable ship and it felt BAD. 30 seconds of watching a failing tank felt like it stretched out for those same two months of work (just to rub it in).
I learnt a lesson that day. I didn't learn it very well I'll admit, I still lose the occasional ship in spectacularly stupid ways but the important thing is I don't put at risk anything that can't be replaced.
One final word, and the reason I still play today after almost 6 years: what other game provides the consequences that can plunge you to the deepest depths of misery one moment and the dizzy heights of elation the next? My advice: get some booze or pot in, plan you ascension and go out and find some pew pew! Oh and next time you take a mission check on http://eve-survival.org that you're prepared...
Good luck!
