too bad you can,t orbit a planet in Eve with the new graphics Eve could be a nice AFK-screensaver maybe CCP could make a screensaver like that

Mmm, gravity.
I know it would add all kinds of precious calculations to the servers, but us being able to feel every aspect of gravity would be amazing.

The N-body problem is unsolved except when N=2.
But, you could totally fake it and come out really damn close. Considering that the server already knows the masses and distances between all the objects in a solar system (witness the overview), it wouldn't put much extra load on.
The problem is that you'd hate it. I'm pretty sure that is also the reason that all the planets and moons have been stopped dead in their orbits for the last 6 years or so.

I assure you i wouldn't hate it. And why stop with just the gravity of planets? Freighters and other ships with lots of mass should gently pull smaller ships like frigates into orbit around them.
As for the planets and moons not moving, i choose to just ignore that and pretend they do.

Edited by: Mr Kidd on 04/12/2009 10:36:30 How about before we get gravity, we get first person ****pit views and some real piloting? Honestly, wth is "gravity" going to add to the game in a point, click and wait universe that we have now? It would be nice if Eve could be more "technically" challenging. How about having to dock one's self.......at an rotating station? Or, having to actually aim projectile or blaster weapons? How about real collision effects/damage? How about being able to hide from sensors behind that massive planet over there? What about being able to dodge being shot in this nice asteroid belt? After all that, then add the gravity for increased technical challenge.
EDIT: Honestly, ****pit? ****pit? You've got to be ****ing kidding me.

Yes, whats needed is a close simulation of all gravitational perturbations down to a granularity of 10 newtons/m3. That'll do it. Now where do I put my several trillion trillion trillion spare BlueGene/L supercomputers?

Orbit would be awesome with the new graphics. I wouldn't mind even being able to set up about 6 waypoints in a loop manually and setting up some sort of autopilot loop.

You could easily add it to the client that it installs a screensaver!

It would be REALLY easy to implement orbiting around planets, the code is already there! I'm thinking of the orbit button. If it just allowed a value of say 10000km - 15000km you could orbit a planet by selecting it and pressing orbit.

There is no *general* solution for N-body problem when N > 2, but you can always use the integrator (i.e. Runge-Kutta) you are already using to compute interceptions to find the solutions for given boundary conditions (typically you are looking for x,y,z(t) given initial t). Of course this is somewhat computationally expensive.

I like the idea. I think having a gravitational effect would look and feel cool. It would also be nice to have those effects play out in something as extravagant as a physical black hole.....don't like a corp mate fire on him till he is force in. I mean come on we can't see celestial objects such as stations and moons and planets orbit least we can do is orbit it ourselves with gravity as a friend. Don't stray too close to the atmosphere or your ship pops lol
