I started a new Caldari-alt some days ago and have some problems with the skills for caldari weapons. I'm using a Merlin and a Cormorant equipped with small missile launchers and railguns. Of course I have basic skills for launchers and turrets but how can I increase damage, tracking and firing rate ?

Sharpshooting Controlled Bursts Motion Prediction Rapid Fire Surgical Strike
and since you're just using the base turrets, you'll want T2 turrets eventually so add the following: Small Railgun Specialization Medium Railgun Specialization

Edited by: Assyrinja on 04/12/2009 17:10:55 Thank you !
I found some information. Did I forget anything ?
Gunnery Basic turret operation skill. 2% Bonus to weapon turrets' rate of fire per skill level.
Small Hybrid Turret Operation of small hybrid turrets. 5% Bonus to small hybrid turret damage per level.
Controlled Bursts Allows better control over the capacitor use of weapon turrets. 5% reduction in capacitor need of weapon turrets per skill level.
Weapon Upgrades Knowledge of gunnery computer systems, including the use of weapon upgrade modules. 5% reduction per skill level in the CPU needs of weapon turrets, launchers and smartbombs.
Surgical Strike Surgical Strike Knowledge of spaceships' structural weaknesses. 3% bonus per skill level to the damage of all weapon turrets.
Sharpshooter Skill at long-range weapon turret firing. 5% bonus to weapon turret optimal range per skill level.
Rapid Firing Skill at the rapid discharge of weapon turrets. 4% bonus per skill level to weapon turret rate of fire.
Trajectory Analysis Advanced understanding of zero-G physics. 5% bonus per skill level to weapon turret accuracy falloff.
Small Railgun Specialization Specialist training in the operation of advanced small railguns. 2% bonus per skill level to the damage of small turrets requiring Small Railgun Specialization.
Motion Prediction Improved ability at hitting moving targets. 5% bonus per skill level to weapon turret tracking speeds.
Advanced Weapon Upgrades Reduces the powergrid needs of weapon turrets and launchers by 2% per skill level.

I cant see much difference between 125 and 150 mm railguns. The 150 mm seem to have a greater range and a slower rate of fire and they use more CPU and powergrid.I found no info if they do more damage then the 125 mm.

125mm prototype gauss gun: Damage mod: 2.4
150mm prototype gauss gun: Damage mod: 3.3
As all the skills and bonuses work off that base damage modification, the 150mm will do alot more damage over time than a 125mm provided everything else stays equal (target in optimal, low to no transversal, match to sig radius, etc)

Yes. When you do a "Show Info" on each, look for the "Damage Modifier" number. The 125mm Railgun I has a 2x damage modifier. The 150mm Railgun I has a 2.75x damage modifier.
Consider an Antimatter Charge S does 7hp kinetic and 5hp thermal per shot.
So if you fire an Antimatter Charge S from a 125mm Railgun I, you will do 14 hp of kinetic damage and 10 hp of thermal damage.
If you fire that same Antimatter Charge S from a 150mm Railgun I, you will do 19.25 hp kinetic and 13.75 hp thermal per shot.
Of course, as you already noted, the 125mm fires faster and has a smaller range. And then you take all your skills into account. All this complexity is why most people have spreadsheets or EFT or something similar to figure out their actual DPS potential.
Doh.. ninja'd.

You'll also find that the smaller guns hold more ammo than larger, take less CPU and power grid, and are thus easier to fit.
It's quite a ways in your new alt's future, if you go this route at all, but the Harpy (gun-based assault frigate) can fit a nice buffer tank and two damage mods if you put 75mm railguns on it. If you use 125mm or 150mm you wind up having to make sacrifices in either damage mods, tank/warp jammer fitting, or both. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

What can you do to increase the turret speed? For example I'm using a Hyperion with 425mm Railguns, and can't outrun something to get far away, and if I'm close, I constantly miss.

Motion prediction..
But you are thinking about it the wrong way you don't speed up your guns tracking you slow down the target with a webber or 2.
Also keep some light and medium drones to use against BC and smaller targets.

If you can't outrun a ship (to get a lower transversal) try flying towards it instead. All NPCs have an optimal orbit distance at which they wish to remain..if you are flying towards them they will usually turn and start flying away from you in nearly a straight line to get back to that set distance. You'll have a few moments of very low transversal and can get some good shots off.
This doesn't work very well if the ship orbiting you is a LOT faster than you and a lot smaller. i.e. a frigate orbiting your battleship at 1,000m.

Webbers have a range of ~12km, which is fine for blasters and other close range weapons, not so useful if you're using railguns or other long range weaponry.
To Daremo: Target painters and tracking computers are two modules you may want to look into. As Skex said, ideally you want to be using sentry drones against smaller targets
