I'm considering which cruiser of the two should be my first.
I'm more interested in combat, and first glance the Celestis is more appealing with it's launcher hardpoints that I so love. (I have a kestrel just for fun, though my tristan is more all-purpose.) However, it seems to me there must be a reason that the rax costs so much more. Also, I must admit being curious about the rax because I think the celestis is downright ugly, and all the people I know in the game use their rax for mining and can't help me much.
So my question is, could I turn a thorax into a fighting ship, equal or better than a celestis? Or are those hardpoints the way to go?

Thorax is arguably the best cruiser in the game. But, a large part of what makes it so good is its large drone bay. If you don't have the skills to take advantage of that, then a celestis might not be a bad option.
Of course, you can always get a thorax later on, and it won't hurt quite as much if you lose the celestis whilst getting used to handling cruisers.

My Celes copes fine for most lvl 3 missions until i hit Mordus and ran outta ammo. Never used one of the pvp but im tempted to try her as an anti frig ship, 3 150 frig rails (or 3 200mm cruiser) and 2 assault launchers ( light missiles) mated with 8 med drones. The Celes does get a tracking bonus..which i imagine is nice. I believe the Thorax rules over the Celes pvp wise tbh.
Celes really is an ugly duckling ( i like that) and an odd ball in gallente ships being a rail and missile boat, instead of the usual blasters.

All cruisers have a niche. Thorax isn't the best cruiser but its the most popular. Celestis is a fine ship and is a good inty hunter. Thorax has its weak spots... you only need to exploit them. -----

The advantages of the Thorax are , well easy. The ship, simply, is very hard to get wrong.
With its cruiser bonus, the Thorax quite simply has the most CAP and Cap regen with an MWD fitted. Five gun slots + ample powergrid give you a ship that can go from one of the longest range, to one of the shortest range high damage setups.

A popular high damage and high survivanility thorax setup:
5x light neutron blasters (yes frig guns) 1x 10MN MWD 1x web 1x scrambler 1x small armor repairer 1x 1600mm plate 1x RCU 2x whatever you want.
it has BS sized armor, does very good damage with 9 heavy or medium drones + 5 light blasters and is reasonably fast.
Another popular one is fitting a 100mn AB instead of the scrambler. Change light neutrons to 150mm rails, 1600mm plate for 400mm one and go kill frigs in it.

The ultra safe option is 5x250mm rails, 10MN MWD + RCUs and Cap Relays/Rechargers + a drone bay full or hornets. No tanking at all because the MWD & rails ensure that you can engage at 60km and remain 50km or greater away from targets using iron or lead M. Good for all level III missions save Mordus, because, damnit, I eventually run out of ammo.
Yes, Hornets, not medium or heavy drones. Hornets are 1. Small so you can carry lots. 2. cheap so you can afford lots. As a result they are 3. essentially discardable - like ammo. They are also fast, so they 4. can get to enemies fast enough to not take damage on the way in, and 5. able to out fly the rats tracking when they get there, also, 6. fast enough to outfly any light or heavy missiles.

The Celestis is one of those ships that'd not do much adversely to game balance if it got a third bonus. It's fragile, slow, and has low firepower. The Thorax is easily the better of the pair.
I, personally, fly a Thorax extensively, and have only lately been able to acquire the skills to make some heavy damage. So far, I've taken down two apocs (they forgot they had drones...) alone with it. Thorax is the only cruiser I know that can break through a double large (accomodation/i-a polarised) armour repairer tanking. The only real drawbacks with the Thorax is that it's slow and has too low powergrid. CCP were planning to remove half of the drone bay, which is essentially only a valid game balance change if they boost it's powergrid by atleast a basic 100. What it truely suffer from is a lack of speed.
The setup I am using, which I mostly keep to myself, is mostly an all-out-damage fitting. I have no fear of any cruiser in the game except Caldari/Gallente Heavy Assault Ship. Amarr crusiers, especially, I laugh at. Dura-Thoraxes go down so fast it's laughable (I hardly loose shield to those pathetic light guns), and I have only respect for Caldari cruisers. Minmatar cruisers tend to run away too fast (only time I've ever gotten seriously damage, I warped in on one with no cap left and no shield due to rats), but Caldari ships fight with underhanded tactics. Moas are easy, Blackbirds tend to die from drones but aren't worth attacking, and Caracals... I see too seldom to even bother with. I do not doubt that a Caracal might become a worthy opponent, but I doubt it'd survive unless fitted for speed (keeping further than 10km), in which case I do not bother with them --
If TC causes you discomfort that you feel is unwarranted or may be outside TC's current contract - contact me, please. |

*coff* I fly lots of Gallente ships. The author was comparing the rax to the celestis. The celestis does not have ample powergrid - or the low slots to make up the defecit. Sure the rax doesnt have the PGrid of a amarr ship. But then, its not designed or required to equip 5 heavy beams :P

I'd personally recommend getting the Vexor before the Celestis...unless you absolutely have to have the missles. The Vexor is around 1/2 the cost of a Thorax, and it's a very versitle ship. Very agile too. But once again, if you have better missle skills than drone skills, you might want to consider the Celestis first.

You dont get out much... do you?
Alqualonde, go with what you will enjoy. The thorax has many advantages over its gallente counterparts. The celes does give you the versitility of having some different setups with those launcher slots. Though if really like missiles, perhaps you should look at purchasing a Caracal.

I fly a thorax, and I used to fly a caracal, guess which one I prefer? Ok, a fast caracal is the only possible way to beat it, but if they caracal is flying away from you then just don't bother, all you gotta do is turn around in the thorax and get out of any scramblers range with the mwd. Without an mwd the caracal would easily be beat by the thorax, simply because the small blaster tank rax will last more then long enough to where you can get close enough to use all 8 ogres and all 5 blasters :) Which is, probobly the most damage/ per second a cruiser could do. =)

Edited by: laserc on 15/11/2004 00:48:59 Imo the this is the rank of cruisers
Thorax = Blackbird > Maller > Rupture > Moa
Blackbird with some jammers is hard to beat unless you got a specialized ship, but generally the thorax can beat it because the drones still kill even though you are target jammed. An fof caracal could give the blackbirds some real problems though.

Blackbird with some jammers is hard to beat unless you got a specialized ship, but generally the thorax can beat it because the drones still kill even though you are target jammed. An fof caracal could give the blackbirds some real problems though.

pffft....
Rupture > ALL CRUISERS - not even same ballpark.
Don't get Weirda started again...
But Weirda don't think that really help the OP much...
OP should post a bit about preferred fighting style. Doesn't sound like he into PvP yet - so all of the other gibberish is pretty pointless (Caldari Cruisers DO suck though)...
Thorax are fun though (not as fun as Minmatar Cruisers though) - though one thing to consider is that it's bonus (unfortunately like many Matari Cruiser) only apply to 60% of it's weapons. Celestis seem to make much more sense as a longer range cruiser (if that's your style). Thorax can pretty much do both well. -- Thread Killer

For race specific loadouts... Nafri is correct. Thinking out-side the box configs... all cruisers have a place in the game. It all comes down to you having fun with what you fly. Thorax is a mean ship but so is a Celestis. The celestis can do something a Thorax can't do : 3 X medium NOS, 2 malkuth heavy launchers
MWD, 20km scrambler, F-B10 cap charger
1 small t2 armor rep, 4 cap relays
8 medium drones.
8 medium drones + 3 NOS and 2 Heavy Launchers can put a world of pain on a many frigate and cruisers. It can make life short of interceptors as well. Not that the Thorax can't do other, similar types of setups but solo this is a very viable solution for the Celestis. You can hang back at over 10km webby range and warp scramble while orbiting at high MWD speed. Break their Dura-Tank or high damage Cruiser setups while still eating their shields and armor with missiles and drones. IE, Thorax isn't the only kid on the block that can take on other ships... its just most people are sheep when it comes to layouts... and Thorax has a nobrainer ( that many people account for). -----

Calestis is probaply the most solid alround cruiser in the game, but Eve PvP simply isn't about alround ships, you need to have one specific function for your ship and equip it to perform 100% in that single role.
I think the Calestis is a great ship and I fly one to do missions, but in PvP you need to be able to kill one single type of ship extremly well, while avoiding ships that are set up to kill you extremly well as far as I understand it.
