Looks like there might be a workaround... http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1228968&page=1#3

All I was saying is that IMO they are quite far from the "Excellence" they announced for 2010. I'm sure no one forced them into saying this and I'm also sure some of the customers will use this as a basis for forming an opinion on how CCP is doing.
Problem is, it's all true. and to top it off, we're talking about the biggest, most complicated game server IN THE WORLD.
Even Multiple-realm Blizzard can't always manage a patch smoothly. I remember more than a few occasions where their extended, basically all-day downtime turned into a TWO DAY downtime.
This is not mentioning SOE's epic failures, which generally led to the game being unplayable for at least part of a week after every patch, and multiple hotfixes JUST TO GET IT STABLE.
And lets not forget the time they tried to sneak a change to mission payouts that would nerf the biggest source of easy income in the game by undocumented till patch day...and forgot to put the code in the patch. Guess what happened? Everyone ran out in a solo grouping frenzy to get their money built up before SOE actually managed to hotfix the fix for it in.
I'm not comparing EVE to any other game here. I'm not even trying to compare it to anything else.
I'm just remembering their own words. I really think it's okay to use that as the bar.
And while the commonplace is (usually) true we inevitably see differences in quality in different products.
And just because something is better it is not automatically good (or even excellent) - it might just be not as bad as the other thing.
Well IIRC the posters didn't say "we won't have bugs, period", but something about striving for excellence. And to different peoples minds that will mean different things. To me it means, doing as much testing as possible given the type of application and resources available, cutting features/improvements/etc. when they're not up to the standard. And having good procedures in place to make sure the quality of the coding is good enough. To me it most definetly doesn't mean no bugs. Cause that's not a realistic goal. And unrealistic goals don't motivate at all.
And you do have to compare to others to see how you're doing, don't see how you could quantify excellence without compairing to others doing similair things really.

Today at the EVE
Client: Hello Server. Can I log on? Server: Hey Client, sorry, you have an incompatible protocol there. Client: Yeah, I know, patch day and such. Can I have the update? Server: Dumdidum dumdidium. Client: Server? Can I have the patch now? Server: Dubididum dumdidum. Client: HEY SERVER, I AM TALKING TO YOU !! Server: What? Oh, hey Client, you have an incompatible protocol there, want a patch? Client: ARGH! Yes, of course. Server: Here you go, starting upload. Good luck! Client: Yeah, yeah, whatever. *Client walks off to patch.* Server: What's up with Client today?

I'm really looking forward to this "Excellence" that was announced for the coming year at Fanfest. I hope CCP will address the release procedure too.
Because unexpected DTs / service interruptions are rather far from excellence...
I was not comparing EVE to any other product / software / service. I was only comparing the announced result to the one that was actually delivered. (One can tell if a person delivers something on time or not - even if no other person is around)
And I never said nor implied that I was expecting bug-free software. So all this talking about "A system like EVE cannot be bug-free" is true but still misplaced, since that was never the point.
There is a reason CCP made "Excellence" the motto for 2010. And this reason is surely not that there is no more room for improvement.
Why do think would a company - at its annual customer convention - present itself and say "Next year will be about 'Excellence'"? Do you think it is because they expect everyone to be happy with the quality? Or do you think they would do something like that because quality might be really something that should be improved?

Message on website gives some clues to problem. When going to page to find patch it says Quote: The website you requested has been temporarily disabled. We have a number of Amarrians bringing in Minmatar labour workers to get it back up.
everyone KNOWS Minmatar build with ductape and bailing wire, FFS bring in some Gallente labor to build it right the first time
