Just skip the movie and get some kills. My drunken redneck of a brother actually put it quite nicely while watching that movie. "We've been watching them go to bed for 2 weeks and all I saw is a ****ing door close!"

Originally by: Ban Doga I'm really looking forward to this "Excellence" that was announced for the coming year at Fanfest. I hope CCP will address the release procedure too.
Because unexpected DTs / service interruptions are rather far from excellence...
And they're also pretty much a given, when working with software such as EVE. Work with similair software myself, and while you do everything you can, unless your producing a 100% uptime application you have to live with the fact that you can't allocate enough resources to prevent this sorta stuff from happening. The extra 100s of hours ( if not 1000s ) of hours needed on QA are not worth it to prevent the risk of a couple extra hours of DT and some hotfixes.
For every hour of development we spend 2 hours of testing. And that's not even remotely enough to prevent this sort of stuff from happening. It's not like they're working on a new version of MS Paint.

Hey, if it was SOE, we'd already be on the 7th hotfix by now, and the server might actually be stable this time! And if we're really lucky, the rubberbanding will be fixed so travel is actually possible, and the shuttles will work properly, and you won't desynch every five minutes! But it's only been a week of hotfixes every day so far so we might have a day or two before it's playable!
Yeah, when you Eve players start complaining about patches and downtime, it makes SWG players roll their eyes.

Quoting commonplace ("testing takes time", "software has bugs", "they work hard") is okay. I just never feel that is of any relevance.
All I was saying is that IMO they are quite far from the "Excellence" they announced for 2010. I'm sure no one forced them into saying this and I'm also sure some of the customers will use this as a basis for forming an opinion on how CCP is doing.

Problem is, it's all true. and to top it off, we're talking about the biggest, most complicated game server IN THE WORLD.
Even Multiple-realm Blizzard can't always manage a patch smoothly. I remember more than a few occasions where their extended, basically all-day downtime turned into a TWO DAY downtime.
This is not mentioning SOE's epic failures, which generally led to the game being unplayable for at least part of a week after every patch, and multiple hotfixes JUST TO GET IT STABLE.
And lets not forget the time they tried to sneak a change to mission payouts that would nerf the biggest source of easy income in the game by undocumented till patch day...and forgot to put the code in the patch. Guess what happened? Everyone ran out in a solo grouping frenzy to get their money built up before SOE actually managed to hotfix the fix for it in.

So why offer the patch for d/l if its wrong? If it means re-installing i'll just delete the lot as its not worth it atm imo.

While I agree with your point, it is not insurmountable to announce extended downtime at least 24 hours in advance. Especially if it's likely to be even more extended than originally planned. For some people those three hours may be the only time they can log in to set the next skill after the 1d6h one which is just 6h by now...

I'm not comparing EVE to any other game here. I'm not even trying to compare it to anything else.
I'm just remembering their own words. I really think it's okay to use that as the bar.
And while the commonplace is (usually) true we inevitably see differences in quality in different products.
And just because something is better it is not automatically good (or even excellent) - it might just be not as bad as the other thing.
