Edited by: Saphieria on 08/12/2009 14:29:11 Deleting "prefs.ini" solved the problem for me.
On Windows 7 the file is located in this directory:
Drive:\Users\Accountname\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\g_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings
The drive letter and accountname are of course system specific.
Edit: the bug is back after you close the game and start it again
Guess I have to play in german until a fix arrives

i had same problem on vista 64 after the last 2 patchs. get the splash screen followed by nothing but the desktop, game is running in process's window.
To solve it delete the ccp folder from the local files in documents folder. you may need to untick show hidden files in view options.

dongo, did you delete your ccp folder mate(this folder contains all ur settings for the game) it is hidden folder so make sure you have show hidden folders ticked under the view options menu. otherwise you wont see it,
plus i believe there is another ccp folder in documents, deleting this wont do anything ,it has to be the hidden folder

Those of you having to delete pref.ini every time you run eve, could one of you upload the offending file to eveFiles or some such and link it here?
I suspect I know what is happening and if so, I can write a batch script that you could launch eve from and only loose your language localization settings every time. But to know for sure I would need a copy of the offending file (or several offending files).

Okay, I found out what is causing the error(for me). In the aforementioned prefs.ini, check the path for BrowserCache, and make sure it contains no wierd letters. I had an "S" in there, and it prevented the game from starting. You can just change it to whatever you want as long as it is a proper path, I think.

Hi all,
Those of you who are experiencing this issue. Can you please reply here with:
- What value the "BrowserCache=" has in the prefs.ini file. - What your OS language is. - If you can resolve your issue by simply deleting the BrowserCache line from prefs.ini. - If the line is re-added after a restart of the client.
Location of prefs.ini:
* Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings * Windows XP Steam: %USERPROFILE%\Local SettingsLocal Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_steam_steamapps_common_eve_online_tranquility\settings * Windows Vista: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings * Windows Vista Steam: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_steam_steamapps_common_eve_online_tranquility\settings * Windows Vista 64bit: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_(x86)_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings * Windows Vista 64bit Steam: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_(x86)_steam_steamapps_common_eve_online_tranquility\settings * Windows 7: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings * Windows 7 Steam: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_steam_steamapps_common_eve_online_tranquility\settings * Windows 7 64bit: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_(x86)_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings * Windows 7 64bit Steam: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_(x86)_steam_steamapps_common_eve_online_tranquility\settings

Ok I was having this problem and this solved it for me because there was an odd piece of text in my prefs.ini file, i simply changed it.
it was this :BrowserCache=C:\Documents and Settings\EvEÖAdmin\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings\Browser
I changed it to this :
BrowserCache=D:\New Folder\Browser
works like a charm now, no more hang ups. Lizaa

EVE: - English client - Inital value of BrowserChache:

Experiment 2
Suggestion: Rename EVE chache folder. (from CCP Tenitigo; http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1223686)
Results: - client does not start - new chache folder is created immediately

I have Windows Vista 32bit - English. I had problems with this during the original release of dominion. I one again cleared the cache manually (renaming the Eve folder in \Local\CPP) to see if that helped.
With the latest update, I checked the prefs.ini in the location specified and I too do not have any entry labeled BrowserCache=
In all my testing, I have simply renamed the EVE folder within the \Local\CPP. I checked every instance of prefs.ini under these folders, and none of them have this entry. Even the original one that also had the singularity info used for the test server and the prefs.ini did not have a BrowserCache= entry.
More than happy to add a new bug report/update current ones opened for this.

I didnt't have a Browser line in my prefs.ini either but 2x the character "+" in another line. EVE doesn't seem to care about a "@" or other special characters in that file but anything like "-+_" will mess it up. Simply delete those characters, not the whole line.
My prefs.ini looked like this:
bitsCancelled=1 clusterMode=LOCAL clusterName=J+RG-QUAD@J+RG-QUAD debug=0 decimal=. digit=, eulaagreed=0 host=0 inputhost=localhost languageID=EN machoNet.acceptThreadCount=20 newbie=0 port=26000 settingsported_uicore_rubicon=,pc,549659,599057137
Deleting the 2 "+" in the third line, so it looks like "clusterName=JRG-QUAD@JRG-QUAD" solved the problem for me. And I don't have to delete the file every time I start the game.
The game still has a german translation but having a windows account-name/network-name with a special character seriously messes things up.

It's on the list, along with fixing the lag and the logs that show nothing ---- a reply which adds nothing to a thread or results in a thread being bumped with no new discussion worthy content is considered spam and as such warrants a forum ban |

Hi !
I solved the problem for me it seems:
clusterName=***n***@***n***
after i changed "n" to "ue" it worked !
clusterName=***ue***@***ue***
seems all people who posted here have some chars in their cluster names with _,+,-,ß,·, or else don't work. Try out.

Confirming that removing these letters from cluster name in prefs.ini solved the problem.

browser cache don't exist as you see OS language is Norwegian since the line isn't even there I doubt it
as you see from my clustername, there are no funky non english letters there.
I have to delete the folder and file, or keep eve logged on as long as the battery works.

Win Vista 32bit Dutch
prefs.ini deleted worked once, after every reboot or restart of a eve client, no boot so I had to delete prefs.ini again.
Checked my prefs.ini again, and noticed I have « in my computer name. Changed it or R and now it works again.
I gave all these letters a test in my computername in the prefs.ini file:
n S d ÷ n «
Confirmed that those letters in the prefs.ini file, will stop eve from starting up!

Edited by: Lineath on 11/12/2009 12:11:43 Got a solution:
Uninstall all, including, cache and setting options tick in the unistaller.
Then download the offline installer, install it.i used a diferent directory than default.
Run eve. Go to the new internet browser, click options, and specify new cache folder, try someting simple i put these:
C:\eve\browser
clear cache, save.
exit eve, test if you can re-enter, reeboot if you whish and test.
it worked for me no more problems.

Earlier someone said you shouldn't have to be a computer technician to play this game.
My question is, Should you?
Is this amount of neglect typical for how Eve Online deals with client issues?
After buying a subscription, I have been extremely frustrated and disappointed by how the company has dealt with this problem (The game disappearing after dominion appears etc).
Can some people please advise if this is a typical level of care they put to communication and fixing of problems?
Thank You,

Unfortunately yes. Their track record is not to hot with small scale glitches as they:
1. Figure it's your computer and not the game.
2. They trully can care less if 100 accounts are canceled.
If they cared they would stickie a dev topic and give updates on possible fixes for us to refer too instead of us all chatting with each other trying to figure out the problem. That or even worse force us to go through the atrocious petition system. Larsonist > i still enjoyed the pew pew though, all the pos sh!t ive been doing lately had me feeling like smeagle without his precious. |

Yea, all those are unicode or extended ASCII characters without basic ASCII equivalents. I ran some tests and pretty much determined that if they are anywhere in the prefs.ini file your client won't launch.
That seems to be the problem for most people in this tread (but not all). I'm really curious what the problem is in the code. When I first saw it I figured they had just made a poor choice of built in python string handling functions when parsing the file (most of those have version that only support ascii and versions that support unicode) but considering how long this is taking I doubt that to be the problem.
