So i've just started doing level 4's. Dualboxing raven and dominix.
I've tried salvaging a few missions and it just doesnt seem worth the trouble (at all!).
When/how is salvaging worth it?

Not all wrecks have good salvage.
However some NPCs yield very decent salvage (Angels, Sansha, ...). If you are against EoM - they have crap salvage, but it's sometimes worth looting the wrecks because they drop tons of random loot.
From linky:

Earnings breakdown (all missions): Bounties: 27% Reward: 7% LP: 27% Salvage: 20% Loot: 18%
The numbers may not be entirely accurate - but they are good estimations.
So as you can see, salvage and loot actually bring more than bounties and mission rewards.
So I suppose it depends on how fast can you run missions. If you are not breezing through them, I suppose it's better if you do at least some looting/salvaging (when it's worth it). ---

Depends on the mission level, as usual. Mission rewards can top 40 million with salvage in level 4`s. As for level 5`s you can add in another 30 percent, but it`s recommended you do those with a partner. Preferably one good at PVP

Please note those figures were from before the salvage changes. Now they're more in the area of this:
Bounties: 24% Reward: 7% LP: 37% Salvage: 14% Loot: 18%
Note also that these figures are calculated under certain circumstances. Look in the thread for more info.

Do you have a dedicated salvager?
I hated salvaging at first when I was using a destroyer, but then I bought a Ferox to use solely for salvaging and it makes it so much easier.
4 salvagers, 3 tractor beams, MWD and 4 cargo expanders.
Breezes right through. Still depends on my mood though whether or not I salvage.

Its not worth anymore the time... but... as more pilots realize this, quantities in the market will drop... its unknown how the demand its gonna stabilize, capsuleers are now rigging ships that didn't before due to cost... but large rigs will drop in demand.
this will result in 2 scenarios:
1- salvaging will became a newbie oriented way of earning isks 2- prices will stabilize (raise) until isk/time/fun fits most of the pilots standards
ofc, peeps with observation skills will salvage only specific ships to maximize isk/time

IMO: Salvaging 1,2,3 lvl missions - not worth the time. For level4 use separate salvager, say, Hurricane, 4 tractrs, 4 salvagers, lows filled with cargo expanders, cargo rigs desired, that way you make only one salvage trip. If you have at lvl4: - angels and sansha - salvage - drone missions - dont salvage unless you are a builder - less than 10 large wrecks per room - dont salvage - less than 5 wrecks filled with loot - dont salvage
If are selling salvage or using for manufacture of rigs (for own use or selling), make an estimation, if the time used for salvaging could be used for making another mission. If that mission nets X mil, while profits from salvo amount to less in the same span of time, you will have your answer.

Unless you are exceptionally slow in doing missions the salvaging/looting is not worth it for majority of missions. There is few however in where you can kinda 'break even' against accepting the next mission and doing that instead. Those 'few' depend on your mission running speed. As rough rule of thumb Gone berzek, Right had of Zazz, Damsel in distress, Attack of the Drones and Worlds Collide. Extravaganzas can also be worth it, but as the crap is located in 4-5 different pockets it's somewhat iffy usually.
Just be diciplined and ignore the crap that is out of your reach. It is not worth it to fly 40 km between wrecks to pick up some random wreck that happened drop beyond your tractor range.

yup, those are the main level 4 types of player...
newbie: 1- pick up mission 2- fit specific resis 3- stargate 4- agro management. 1 by 1 pocket. 5- kill 6- return station 7- pick up specific salvager 8- stargate 9- run around collecting wrecks 10- fly back home. next mission.
skilled for Lvl4: 1- pick up mission 2- stargate 3- agro room 4- kill when NPC under 40km (unless higher orbits). loot and salvage while killing 5- fly back home. next mission.

Originally by: Irene Soderhall I've tried salvaging a few missions and it just doesnt seem worth the trouble (at all!).
Over the last month of missioning, I've collected enough salvage to build 45 units of each of the following rigs: Trimark, Energy Locus, Nanobot Accel, Polycarbon, Low Friction Nozzle, Energy Collision Accelk, Remote Medium Repair and Auxiliary Nano Pump.
That's enough rigs to keep my HACs, CS and Logistics ships in rigs for a LONG time..all from just 1 month of missioning doing just a few missions a night.

I use a domi for missions and as i couldnt fire a gun for my life, i have one tractor beam and one salvager in the highs, salvaging every bs that dies in 20 km (good i mission in angel space) but never stop or waste time for it. Makes some millions extra each mission without keeping my drones from bringing the bountys home. And why is there still nothing that sets content apart from signature? Is that intentional or technically imposible? |

@ OP,
No, leave the Salvage to the professionals and go get another mission. You'll earn more LP that way, better standings, probably more loot, and there'll be more salvage for everyone which ultimately means more, cheaper rigs.

I sense that you are not exactly a disinterested party.
OP, take note: salvage is valuable (albeit less valuable than it once was), which is why ninja salvaging as a profession exists. However, whether or not it's efficient for you, personally, to salvage depends on how fast you run missions. If you're in a Drake and it takes you 30 minutes to finish a mission, but 10 minutes in a destroyer to come back and salvage, you might actually be making more isk/minute in the 10 minutes you're salvaging (which is why ninja salvaging profits are comparable to the low end of running l4 missions). If you're flying a Golem and can finish that same mission in 10 minutes, plus tractor and salvage the large wrecks as you go, coming back to salvage the rest is a complete waste of time - you'll make much more ISK/minute by ignoring the loot and moving on immediately to the next mission.
Edit: didn't notice that you said you were dualboxing. Obviously, if you can salvage with one ship while killing rats with the others, it becomes more worthwhile, Generally only the large wrecks are worth salvaging (one large wreck is equivalent, in terms of the amount of possible salvage, to four medium or sixteen small wrecks, and most valuable loot comes from large wrecks); you might be better served putting the Dominix alt in a Vexor instead, letting it help out on DPS with mediums (or 3 sentries) while it speeds around collecting the large wrecks... at least, until you can upgrade to a Golem...

I use something like that and change resists and drones according to NPC type. Tanks the room cap stable with the AB off and the drones do the dirty work while I loot and salvage the wrecks. It's not the only way of running L4s but it works for me at the moment. ---------------------- They're angry there was damage done to their ship. It's not difficult! |

As others have touched on, definitely if you have a marauder. Since I got mine, I generally do onw of two things depending on the mission. When I'm travelling between groups/gates I'll loot and salvage the wrecks as I go (two tractors/1 salvager). If I fill up the hold (leaving cap 800s usually), I'll ball things up and come back in the 'cane. If it's a mission like Smash the Supplier, where I'm keeping distance and leaving a long line/circle of wrecks, I'll often salvage everything either with the marauder or the cane.
My rambling point is that I don't play Eve on a cost/benefit basis. I like to try out all sorts of things, so I'll salvage until I'm not bored, small wrecks and all. Hell, I'm halway to filling up a GSC, can't stop now :D

Well, I guess it would be dishonest to suggest that I'm a disinterested party. But yeah, you're advice is sound. For most mission runners, those who don't have a Marauder, even those who are dualboxing, you'll likely come out ahead if you simply grind missions, grabbing the best loot from the large wrecks, and only worry about salvaging Angels, Sansha, and Bloods and the corresponding Empire factions of same.

I usually do L4s in loki with 2 salvagers and 1 tractor. It basically acts as mini maurader with less gank (dps) pulling wrecks from 40km at 1000ms.

It's really not worth it for the time being. Some missions are exceptions but that also depends on where you are and how the market is. Sounds like you are already familiar with that so you have your answer.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.
