I have been playing Eve for quite awhile and since beta I have been right clicking like a mad man. The other day my doctor tells me I have carpal tunnel syndrome which basically flared up bad over the weekend for me.
I have been having this tingly numb feeling in my wrist and hand all weekend and thought it was strange so had it checked out. This should make you wonder though how many times you have to right click and go through various menus to do simple things or task in eve :).
I am not sueing CCP this is more of a jest but I did get a case of this after playing Eve no lie! I am taking some aspirin and Ibuprofen for it to reduce swelling and have to use those lame mousepads with the wrist thing when I play eve :). I dunno been gaming for awhile among other things and this comes up after long eve use weird :).
CCP should perhaps rethink the menus make them less intensive and let us assign hotkeys :).
Anyways I thought it was funny how many friggin times we right click in Eve and the cause and effects of it in real life ;).

I actually press the f keys (F1, F2 Ect). And use some of the other shortcuts. Try them.

I agree more hotkeys would be good. Even using the ones that they have, combat is a bear on the wrist. Some hotkeys for targeting would be very helpful (e.g., key for locking on selected target, key for cycling through threat targets, key for cycling through asteroids, key for cycling through ships in area, a "get info" key for selection). However, I am afraid this might require some major revamps of the system, which means unlikely to see in the short term.

I had the beginnings of such an affliction until I bought a mouse mat with a gel-filled wrist support. Now I get absolutely no discomfort whatsoever, no matter how long I use my mouse or how often I click (so far...).

My understanding is that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has more to do with the way you use your keyboard and mouse than the actual number of keystokes & button clicks.
Accordingly, correcting your body posture and particularly the position of your arms and wrists, as you use your keyboard and mouse, are the best preventative measures.
I would imagine that for most people, the biggest health risk associated with playing EVE (or almost any other time spent at our computers) is the length of time we are all spending sitting down and largely inactive.
If you really wanted to do something about that as a games manufacturer you could programme 4 regular hourly downtimes a day and call them 'Exercise Breaks'. Tragically I guess that although an hour is about the right amount of time to complete 15 miles your exercise bike, it is also about the right amount of time to order and scoff a Domino's Pizza.

I've suffered the same thing. Played loads of FPSs for years and use a mouse at work all the time. As soon as I started to play eve - wrist/arm ache and numbness.
I'll have to start using those hotkeys... --- 'Dogs love me cos I'm crazy sniffable' |

Trunicus lol you bastage.
Yea in response to the above posts I have a gel filled wrist support pad I just never used it was in my closet =(.
I never had a problem till I started playing Eve alot which I have two accounts so I DO alot of right click warp dock whatever :).
I agree the syndrome is part of a persons posture. I work for a guitar company and players will get this if they have a bad wrist posture along the frets.
I just thought it was weird how this happens nowadays with things we use in life :).

Key binding options would be wonderful. Not so much for the system pull down menu, but like binding bookmarks and so forth. They probably won't do it, but it would be nice. ------------------

using a mouse at the edge of your desk will give you this.
your WHOLE foearm should be able to rest on the desk with the mouse in your hand. then you wont get this problem, trust me i used to suffer from it.
being too high above your desk or too low will result in the same problem, keep your forearm flat on the desk and you wont get it again.. i promise!
those silly units (note NOT a desk) with the slide out keyboard bit tend to be short on room and people who use them tend to get this problem. get a proper desk and a decent chair if your sat infront of the machine a lot.
hope your hand gets beter, i know how bad it hurts.

Hi all,
I was starting to get this same numb feeling in my wrists and fingers. I made just one change and I feel soooo much better: Microsoft Natural Keyboards. I know, I know, I used to loathe them too, but being a programmer and typing all day on a normal keyboard, then coming home and using a normal keyboard all night I was starting to feel the pain just a bit. I switched and had the company buy one for me at work while I bought one for home...now I know that I'll never go back. My fingers and wrists feel so much more comfortable.

I have suffered with something similar to you in the past and I now have a Joystick style mouse. You use your thumb not your finger to do all the clicking, it feels wierd at first but you get used to it.
One word of warning, the actual mouse looks, well, kind of phalic so be prepared for the "amusing" comments that people love to make :o)
Oh, and back to topic, i agree a fey more hot keys would be very nice

Eve has no responsibility to educate you on how to sit behind your desk while playing Eve... Try reading more about RSI. __________________________

ROFLMAO!! Dude... you play too much hahah :D
Just don¦t play 12 hours a day and you shouldn¦t have these kinds of problems. Just a joke tho :)
Serious: If you play much or work much with PCs you¦ll be doing yourself a huge favor with these few tips. I have to do this as lots of my work involves sitting on front of the puter.
1. Take breaks! Really! Get up every two hours, do some stretching. Take a walk or something for 15 minutes. You won¦t believe how good that is for you health and especially your neck and arse :)
2. Buy yourself one of these hand-gym machines. You know those small scissor-like things that you crunch. They help your fingers and handmuscles to relax. This helps very much against problems like the one the original poster described. I have one of these things laying next to my mouse and I play with that thing whenever my hand¦s not on the mouse. It¦s also fun... expecially if you¦re one of the more nervous natures like I am :)
3. Maintain a normal sitting position while playing. You know many people like to lean back in their chair all the time cause they think it¦s all cosy and comfortable. IT¦S NOT! Not keeping a normal upright position in front of the PC is very bad for your neck, arms, hands and legs. When you do this a lot you¦ll suffer problems with your muscles after max a year, trust me!
Really... many people don¦t realise that certain things you do in front of the PC are really bad for your health. These few things help me to prevent this from happening.

wrist aching and bruising can appear while playing long hours on games at your desktop. i find the ebst way to counter this is to get a higher seat so that ur arm is not resting on the table edge, but relaxed on the table top. for comfort from ur wrist and just before your elbow should be flat to the table top.
so get the bricks our and highten your chairs.

I'm a programmer by profession, and I get it in both wrists. It's more to do with posture and proper arm support mate, if your entire arm is on the desk when you play, it helps a lot. Just make sure that you're not putting too much pressure through your elbow.
Either way, you'll get used to it. When your entire arm tingles though, it's time to stop.

Correct. The key to avoid this and other mouse related problems is having proper support for you write/arm.
A good desk with space enougo to fit your screen, keyboard and what not and still allow you to rest your arm on the desk will make sure you do not get this. As soon as you bend your write out over the edge of the table for extended peroiodes of time you will get thsi problem.
Also a nice littel exercise is to place your writs out over an edge and have a broomstick in you hands, now rolle the broomstick, or metalstick, down towards the tip of yoru fingers then back up again and repar 20 times or so.
Aside from that, exercise you muppets! á
