im about to let my sub lapse after 2.5 years of subscribing.
thats right folks, its a bitter vet leaving the game thread.
ive been around since revII, and done pretty much everything. ive spent most of my time in empire, but i did try 0.0 4 times. twice in sov holdable sapce, once down south, once up north. tried NPC 0.0 as well.
been in wormholes a bit, tried low sec pirate corp on an alt.
i crosstrained hardcore, and so can fly all t1 subcaps and many t2's as well, plus a t3. its been awesome fun.
so why leave?
a few reasons.
1. ive run out of shiny stuff. much of my time in eve has been spent fulfilling my magpie-like obsession with shiny stuff. new ships, new guns. but now ive run out, there is nothing more to train for apart from caps, which are outside my grasp in terms of isk.
2. ive done everything. ive done scanning, mining, mission running, wormhole diving, 0.0 fleet warfare (always as an underling mind you), low sec piracy, COSMOS missions.
ive seen the eve gate, the belt-in-a-planet, the opux yacht orbiting that moon.
there is nothing left to do.
3. this is the real killer. i cannot play eve on my laptop.
eve is not a very CPU intensive game, and doesnt require that much ram either (takes about 300mb according to task manager).
but its graphics are arbitrarily higher then all its other requirements. my laptop is perfectly capable of running eve, except for the grapics. CCP's refusal to make a real light client has greatly crippled my gameplay experience because i dont spend that much time at my desktop when i am not on holiday.
im a uni student and a casual employee at a local electronics retailer, i have oodles of spare time, but none of it at home. the game im migrating to (WoW) does not have this arbitrary imbalance in spec requirements, and my laptop will run it just fine.
so fly safe, and yes, you can have my stuff. first person to post here gets my nighthawk.

Sorry to see you go. I'd say take a break and see what changes over time. Dont sell ur character yet if you had planned on that.

can I have some of your stuff? =P
but, really, I know how you feel. ^.^ I take breaks every now and then and just train really long skills while playing Console games. Then I get back into EVE. I wouldn't be able to survive on just EVE as a video game, I would go mad.

There are so many MMOs out there today, it is one huge sandbox and even greater universe to explore, I tell you.
Pity you cannot carry over what you did in one game to the next one.
I agree about the graphics, you can play WoW - or even from my recent experience brand new action MMO with only animation cues - but you cannot play bunch of red boxes and text for arbitrary reason.

I say this in many many MANY posts.
If you can't upgrade your hardware on a routine basis, switch to consoles.
PC gaming require routine upgrades to stay current.
NOT cutting edge, but current.
Laptops are NOT gaming machines in 98% of the cases. They are BUSINESS/media computers.
If you can't afford to replace your laptop every 3 years, switch to desktops.
You can buy a whole new desktop once ever 2 years(reusing your monitor) for about 600$ that will keep you up to date enough to play EVE.
It's not a hard concept. Computers are NOT cars. You don't use them till they rust.
They're like cloths on a toddler. You have a finite window of usefulness. Once it's past, it's not comeing around again.

Wow that Eve resume sounds almost exactly like mine. I likewise also recently faced the issue of having to get a new laptop since a combination of age and a power surge zapped the last one. The key is to get one with a real graphics card. There are no integrated laptop cards that will run a modern game decently AFAIK.
For $600 USD including taxes I picked up a dv4-2045dx by HP, with 4 gig of RAM, dual Turion 2.2 ghz processors and an ATI Mobility Radion HD 4200 card inside. It's a lower-end machine tbh, since I'll need it in the desert next year and it may very well expire before its time via sand and dust, but it runs Eve better than my old desktop and even runs L4D2 with no noticable lag or anything on low detail settings (which are barely distinguishable from the high detail settings anyway.)
Not that I'm advocating dropping $600 on a new machine to play Eve, but the next time you need a laptop you gotta be sure it isn't fielding something like an integrated Intel graphics card or something.

Now young Dirk, haven't you heard of these super-duper boxes that you plug into that hitherto-useless PC Express slot on an uber cheap Dell buiness laptop, that can house a proper PCI-E graphics card?
How about it buddy? ---

its running an ATI integrated card. not as good as dedicated graphics, but hardly a generic intel adaptor.

2.5 years is considered a vet now is it?
Feck. My main joined in Red Moon Rising and I don't consider myself a vet. Really if you weren't around in Exodus when Alliances were created and 0.0 first started to be colonized by players you aren't a vet.

TLDR version: Played for 2.5 years, pretty much trained everything desired, explored the vast majority of EVE, no personal goals left, laptop sucks(really bad), gonna play WoW.
I was curious if you had anything you wanted to give away upon your leaving? Thanks.
