Edited by: Mara Tessidar on 11/12/2009 01:18:02 So I was missioning off in a random system when a friend said he needed help with a level 3 mission, as his tanked drake had made it out with only 10% hull. As I was flying a tanked drake as well at the time, I figured that he'd forgotten to turn on his hardeners or hadn't been paying attention at the wrong moment. So I went and helped him.
I was wrong. Literally, dead wrong. The mission was Portal to War, Part 2 of 5. It was the last room. And there were 22 cruiser-sized or above ships and 10 frigates all 20km off the gate. Yeah. So I made it about 5 seconds before my computer instaaaaa-tiiiiime-waaaarp-laaaagged as they all targeted me. Tanked drake. 18,000 or so hitpoints. 6 seconds. 3000dps. A level 3 mission. This needs to be changed. A level 3 shouldn't require multiple battleships.

Just because you fail at it, doesnt mean they should change it.

I know that. I'm saying they should change it to either a level 4 mission or make the dps much, much lower.
Great argument, by the way.

From Eve survial guide:
Quote: òDon't take too long, or the fleet will get you
Sounds like took too long and they all clumped together.
Can argue recon 1/3 is similar as it has timed spawn too, and if you try to take a small ship through after they all spwan, can be very difficult. Solution is to clean up ships earlier, or blitz it (some blitz advice in the guide).

The fleet that ganked you spawns 2 hours or so after you shoot the control tower. You have 2 hours to grab the mission item and run.
There is nothing wrong with that mission, I did it with terrible skills in a myrmidon, with no problems. When the game tells you to hurry up you should hurry up.

Yeah and when you post a reply, you generally want to read the first post's first sentence. I didn't start this mission, a friend did. I don't know how long it was between the time he first triggered it and the time I arrived. Apparently it was awhile, judging by the insta-pop fleet.

So you've learned an important lesson about checking mission guides before you jump in over your head. No need to yell at other people for something you did wrong. Had you bothered to check, you wouldn't have died. There's nothing wrong with the mission.

Surprisingly, the listing for this one was missing from EVE Mission Survival when I checked. The link to it was conveniently given to me after I died.
I think the real lesson here is "An EVE forum post is like an idiot magnet." One thought-out post besides my own...although judging by what I've read before I suppose that's a pretty good turn out. Now I remember why I don't bother saying anything on here, all a topic's purpose ever is is to get the creator flamed. Looks like it's time for this thread to die.

Disappointed much? And no, your post is not thought-out. ItÆs a whine over a lost ship.
Missions in eve are already mind numbing and the ones that require you to read the mission info and actually think about what you read should remain and even be more frequent.
That you did not even bother to ask your buddy about it, though he is flying the same ship and just barely stayed alive, shows that not the mission needs to be changed but you needed to learn that lesson badly.

I agree. I'm a heavy l4 mission runner (I use a dominix) and I LOVE the missions that make me change out my fittings and tactics. Difficult missions, and ones that cannot be beaten with conventional tactics are VERY welcome in my book.
Sucks that a drake got ganked, but it is par for the course. For the record, I lost more ships on l3s than I have on l4s. (Actually. . . haven't lost ANY in l4s)

I suspect your friend did it deliberately to get you annihilated, as you seem to be one of those "I didn't read the guide, I didn't prepare adequately and I want CCP to change the mission to suit my needs" people.
To be honest, if I were your friend, I would've done it too. ---

heh, you only complain about the forum posts because they're saying something you don't want to hear, despite being right.
A Lvl 4 mission, Enemies Abound 5 of 5 , is similar. Groups spawn at intervals that, if you don't take them out fast enough, will eventually overwhelm you. Warp in, let the first group spawn, and warp out. Come back 20 - 24 minutes later and warp back in. You'll lose your ship and you'll post here saying it was much too difficult to be a Level 4. In fact, at that point maybe a Level 5 or 6?
You came looking for sympathy or agreement. You didn't get it. So of course none of the other posts are thought-out and we're all idiots.

All of your rationale goes out the window when Ad Hominem is introduced. You're now a troll.
FYI, there's great sites out there that allow you to read up on a mission before you partake. SO... before posting a thread about how a mission is too hard, which failed FYI because of the two-hour spawn, you could have spent 30 seconds looking up that mission and been prepared.
Any other questions?

Don't ever assume anything in EVE. I hate losing ships, much like any other mission runner. And to avoid that you need to know what you're going into. Every combat pilot needs to know. There is always a way to do a mission, it may be hard if you're not skilled enough or fitted wrong, but there is a way.
Just yesterday I did Smash the Supplier L4 which I hadn't done in a very long time and I had forgotten how tough it can be. Normally I can tank every mission as long as I manage agro, but in this one I couldn't pop a BS before they melted my CNR's shield. There were like 30 BS, and a ton of others, and they all agro at once. My resolution is 1920x1080 and the ships didn't fit in the overview fully stretched. The way to do it was fit for range, fly away, then agro and keep them at range while you take 'm out 1 by 1. Was easy that way.
It's your job to figure out how to do them. If you don't want that, if you just want to go in, sit and pew, and collect money, then you should look into mining probably.

Not too add to the troll/flames/insults, and we all know hindsite is always 20/20, but there is one other way to cover your arse when a friend asks for help in a mission and you may be going in blind.
NPC's don't care about pods. Scout what you are flying into in your pod and then refit your ship to match. You will also know how badly you will lag (at least from the sheer number of ships on grid) by doing this, and can reset your graphics settings to minimum if needed.
These tactics helped tremendously when the lvl 4 epic arcs came out and there were no guides yet...

You know, check eve-survival before doing missions just seems lazy to me. Like all those gamers out there that use cheat sheets and cheat codes. I've NEVER used any of these missions descriptions; it says a lot more about one's game style to just dive in and play the damn game. See what you're getting smacked around with, and maybe fly out, refit, and come back. I don't do cheats.

There's a level 2 that I lost a tank Drake to once. Same deal - the last room has 30+ battleships and I (foolishly) took full room aggro.

This is how it should be done. It may sound suprising to some ppl, but there was missions in EVE long before these fancy guides. And ppl did the missions, some losses but mostly wins, and it was all good.
Then the mission whiners came along, and everything started dying.

way off topic, but this kind of game generates these kinds of responses. if you are unprepared for being flamed for whatever you say, no matter if you are right or not, you probably should head elsewhere.
this horse is dead, but was a funny read. I also like how you think it needs to change rather than what you could change first.
start there with any mission/plex/what have you. if you can change to win, then its all good, you just screwed up. if upon all changes you still cannot complete, then try with friends, and then if nothing else, ask what others think about it first.
maybe it will need to be changed, but make sure you ask about and not demand something :)
