Looks like STO combat both pve and pvp is wasd based with how you maneuver your ship and assign power along with your ships special abilities being the key to victory or defeat. Sounds like they copied the combat style of the starfleet command games and adapted it for mmo use. Sweet.
Looks like I will be subbing up as soon as it goes open beta.
Also: In before the haters because its not eve.

You know what other game looked good pre-release? Age of Conan. Never get excited for an MMORPG until you play it.

Of course. But massively isn't known to have kiss arse reviewers who try to spin a games playability for marketing reasons. I loved playing SFC:OP online and would jump at the chance to play an mmo based around the combat model it used. Especially as STO will have away teams and other such options that were just a wishful dream of the SFC community way back then.

Honestly, if you're into Star Trek, go give it a bash. I wish you all the best... but honestly, I suspect that once the shine wears off, plenty of people who jumped ship to go play Star Trek will be coming back.

Why do you have to 'jump ship' to play another game that interests you? I don't unsub my eve accounts or even quit actively playing when I want to do some SAW wall whooring in cod4 or leading my mechanical minions to pew pew glory in supreme commander multiplayer or exploring the world of mass effect and dragon age. STO will simply be another nice thing to do when I get burned out on eve and need a short break to recharge. Trust, I will be here playing eve right up till they turn off the server for good many many decades from now.

Copying the combat could actually be a problem too. I liked the games, but they were never really popular. They propably have dumbed it down somewhat to have a wider appeal and ease of use. Not to mention romulans will ass****/gank everyone, if they allow ship customization and the use of overcharged plasma torps+cloaking with a mechanic similar to SFC in a multiplayer game.

I pretty much only play one game at a time simply because I only have so much time to play. I'll bet I am missing lots of good games too...

Apparently you can 'ping out' cloakers now. -------

It was in SFC 3, but it was less than impressive and required highly upgraded systems to get access. Laying mines and triggering them yourself was a much better way to force ships out of cloak and you could also target the cloak as a subsystem for weapons or transport raiding parties to destroy it.There were other ways too, but those aren't going to matter in a MMO and I doubt mine spam will be allowed either. Wonder how they are going to prevent the incoming automated ping spam?
The whole combat system isn't going to work well in a EVE sized fleet fight. Firing arcs and dogfights were only relevant with a very low ship count. Even a few heavy combat ships with good amounts of forward weapon arcs could alpha almost everything in the game and small ships were largely irrelevant.
The point is, that either you have a terribly heavy combat system, that can't handle good numbers and they put in hard limits and instance everything or they have to simplify everything to the point is just isn't that different from any other game. I'm not that fond of either option, but I need to see it in action before I judge it.
