Could you tell why you play EVE, what does it give you?
Tell a bit about yourself like what you work with, and what else you do beside EVE (To find out what kind of people play EVE)
This will be used for a school project.

The two reasons I enjoy EVE are that it's a sandbox and there is always risk involved.
Most games are nothing but a linear level/gear grind. The most you risk is a minuscule set back if you happen to make a mistake, no consequences. These two things result in the onset of boredom at a rapid pace, for me at least.
That's about as simply as I can put it.
I'm a professional, IT industry. 30's, married, child. Also enjoy the outdoors, games video and otherwise, hanging out with friends and/or family occasionally drinking way too much.

Because it's the only MMO you can be competent at without consuming time that could be spent doing things like getting laid.

EVE requires far less 'face time' than other MMOs while still allowing for pilot advancement in terms of skillpoints, isk, production, invention, etc.
The game has a bit more depth than other games and far better replay-ability outside of the mission running environment. We are less reliant upon developers to create content for us to consume (ala WoW, EQ1&2) due to the pervasive PvP aspect.
I'm 41, work in higher education (University level) and engage in interests outside of EVE on a regular basis.

What it gives me: apart from playing with and making new friends - my actions may have an impact on many other people. Gives a sense of accomplishment far above having some more purple gear a whole bunch of other people have as well.
I don't think whatever job I or other players have is important. It takes a certain mindset to love this game.
EDIT: I'm 31 and the older playerbase (compared to other MMOs) is another plus.

Theres a few reasons I play EVE.
Its the most mature, complex MMORPG.
It doesent require you to play for large periods of time to get better.
Its not full of 13yr old WoW players.
Its a sandbox, I can do whatever I want, when I want.
The whole game doesent revole around combat, I can spend all my time in eve without firing a single weapon and still have a great time.

15yr old.
Unemployed but interested in working in IT.
I play Warhammer 40k - Tabletop.
I play Lazer Skirmish, like paintball but with lazers instead. Not to be confused with Lazer Tag.

For me, the reasons have evolved over the (5 and a half) years. But these days it's mainly for relaxation with the few online friends I have left that are still playing.
As for me, I'm a 31 year old web developer from New Zealand.

Its a real challenge, and it does offer something no other game can.. options.. real options. Unlike Everquest, WoW, LOTRO, SWG, etc., you can really be whatever you wanna be. Dude, people have become STOCKBROKERS in Eve! There's a mortician in Eve! There are player run BANKS in Eve! There are pirates, police, kings, presidents, assassins, bounty hunters (though that needs work), advertisers, recruiters, spies, diplomats, tyrants, miners, retailers, wholesalers, inside salesman, short sellers, scouts, explorers, etc.
You have REAL politics going on, real political intrigue.. real risk and real loss. None of this "ZOMG! IM SOZ LEET!" crap either where a person can become unbeatable regardless of the circumstances. Tactics and Strategy mean something in Eve. You also get a higher quality of player in a game like this. Its a game where the long view is the winning view. I also get to hang out with a good group of guys (and even a few real life gals too.)

I'm a big fan of both the risk factor and the immense sandbox. I like that this game is so open that at least one person has made a career out of running a cemetary. Another was basically a tourist.
I'm a 26 year old US Marine and part time student. Interests range from astrophysics to modern dance to firearms. This is the only MMO I play thought I'll probably try out STO when it comes out. Call of Duty is my main FPS though I do dabble in killing zombies.

All of us in Eve matter. Maybe not a lot, but just a little bit. Our decisions have repercussions both to ourselves and the other players we interact with. It's the perfect sandbox. Everything we do, if we do it wrong, can cost us and punish us. Likewise, everything we do right can bring us rewards. Regardless of what we do, skill matters, thought matters, and the players who try, rather than mindlessly grind, are rewarded. You don't have to play a lot either, so long as you make your time count when you do play.\
Anyways, I personally am a ninja salvager/can thief. I'm slowly making the switch to full-time explorer, though.
Out of game, I'm a full time college student. I work part time at a movie theater when not hanging out with friends, going to LAN parties, going rock climbing, or just hanging around with my girlfriend.

Personally I enjoy being part of an immersive and persistent online universe, and seeing that concept expand and grow through projects like Incarna (WiS), New Eden ('space'book) and DUST 514.
That the EVE universe is complex (modules, market, politics) and harsh (loss, risk) is a massive bonus and the main reason Ive stayed in the game so long.
It give me a chance to relax from RL, chat with friends and meet new and interesting people with lazors.
I'm 34, married with kids etc, and work as an international sales manager. Besides EVE er........

to elaborate on point five: i can fly up to someone and blow them up. And if i do it in the street i get shot by the cops, if i do it in the back alley of low sec i can make off with thier watch and money clip. And it has a good environment where friends can just chill and talk .
and for point six there is more corporate espionage in this game than in real life. And CCP doesnt give a ****.
 Player "Someone scammed me out of my ships"
CCP:"Was it an exploit?"
Player:" No, but...."
CCP:"Then Frankly My Dear I Dont Give A DAMN!"
Complete player made enviroment is the point here.

1) Fanfest! Beer + Devs + Friends = Awesome
2) No need for endless grind to stay on top. My character stays competitive without 24/7 grinding. For the moment I'm carebearing in empire, but it doesn't lessen my abilities to go pvp again one day.
3) 0.0 and alliance warfare.
4) Market / whole loss system.

I enjoy playing EVE because it doesn't hold your hand, lets you use your initiative to solve problems (something I love doing) and makes you responsible for your actions, though reading the forums sometimes it seems some people don't think they should be responsible for their own actions.

For the most part it's a more mature and intelligent crowd, as well as having players of more diverse nationalities. Aside from that, the game itself is wide open, and offers more things to do and more ways to do them than you'd find in other online games.

You can play with any timezon in one big sandbox (in wow you have lots of small boxes so 8 mill of people is nothing, you still not mor then 3000 in one box)
Still after playing for X amount of time you still get surprised.
I'm a 42 year old married no children, teacher in art, science and math age 12-15 live in a small town in sweden

I play Eve Online cos Hello Kitty Online is too hard for me.... i hate it when u get blobbed by love hearts in HKO.
ah no but in all seriousness i like most players play eve online cos we are all nerds :P
typical mid 30's bloke who has been playing pc games since the pc games first emerged... got bored of linear gaming. love the sandbox style, love making new friends in game, etc.

I play eve now because i have played eve for so long already, i used to play to escape from the "grind" of real life. (but the grind of EVE sucks as much)
I like the depth of eve, that is what separates it from other games, im generally good with details so like play the industrialist role and messing with fittings.
Im a programmer, i like sci-fi and philosophy, im wearing ... ;)

I play for the next shiney thing and to help younger players out. I biomassed my first char after transfering my assets to this one about a year ago' to have the thrill (read grind) of starting over.
I run missions mostly and use the game as a way to relax. Its a social thing too, without my corpmates this game would become very dull.
