Edited by: Spoon Thumb on 17/12/2009 12:27:03 Eve is the most challenging MMO in terms of mechanics, especially with regards to permanant loss of items/ships when you die, and holding 0.0 space against real human opposition
The stuff I'm interested in, social interactions, building a team, building an Empire, the lessons learned doing those things are more valuable the more realistic and challenging an environment.
Eve is set in the future, I look to the past for lessons but want to apply them in future contexts. Hence why I like sci-fi
Honestly, Eve is the only MMO I've ever given considerable time to aside from a brief stint playing Tabula Rasa. Having invested this time and effort, and from having heard about other MMO's, there's really no reason to even try others. This is probably more the reason why I still play Eve rather than anything specific to Eve
I'm 23, male, computer science graduate
Edit: this is the 'geeks anonymous' meeting right?

2. Single Sharded, one universe.
3. HUGE variety of things to train in and do, without being trapped in a certain class or specialisation.
4. Getting killed, actually means you lose things, meaning that even though the EvE has many issues, even the most simple mundane tasks can actually be risky and as such I enjoy them more.
5. Neat story, races are cool, the ships for each race are unique and different. Dark gritty setting.
6. It is elite II frontier for the 21st Century.

Because it's the only MMO you can be competent at without consuming time that could be spent doing things like getting laid.
I'm 15, and get about an hour a day to play... so the beauty of it is that I can get amazing skills and when I do play (usually to go roam 0.0 or W-space) I have enough SP to fit a decent combat ship. I also write fantasy and sci-fi stories, play warhammer 40k, and I'm thinking of majoring in Marine Biology when I get to college.
you're 15? jesus christ you post as if you were 45.

Tell a bit about yourself like what you work with, and what else you do beside EVE (To find out what kind of people play EVE)
This will be used for a school project.
Thanks in advance o/
I enjoy the PVP. It's a very engaging game with complicated and interesting PVP. I also enjoy the huge player populated universe.
I am unemployed atm. Outside of EVE I enjoy reading, music, outdoors-ey stuff, cake.

Lol, the guy asks about Eve and half the answers are about how gay Wow is. Wtf?
I play Eve because it is one giant puzzle.
I don't play it to meet people, I don't care about having 'internet friends', but I do like the fact that you are in a world full of people doing their own thing. I play lone wolf style though.
I'm a gamedesigner myself, 44 years old, married no kids. So i play games all day.

Edited by: Rotnac on 17/12/2009 14:04:00 I'm a fan of the space setting, and the one-server setup. The industry/economics of the game particularly interest me - its impressive to have such an advanced market in game. But the real attraction is the "sandbox". There is risk in everything, and there's always someone looking to screw you over royally. This makes the game interesting, as opposed to a pointless grind-fest. This is especially true with 0.0 wars (god I hate empire) - while CCP has certainly not always gotten the formula right, the very fact that there's space worth fighting for, and thus that territorial wars to take place, substantially enhances the game. I'm also a fan of the politics and metagaming this brings about - its not just enough that you've got some people who can shoot other people, but you need diplomats, logisticians, commanders, spies, etc. This allows people who aren't as into combat to participate, and really gives the game some color.
I've never actually played any other MMO - no other has ever appealed to me. None allow such free-ranging player interaction.
I'm 23, and a math grad student working on a PhD. Which makes balancing time for Eve and RL interesting - grad life is sometimes very busy.

This is a complement, FYI. At least as far as I'm concerned. There's way too many 15 year olds spouting AOL-speak running around. Thanks for being (or at least appearing to be) a mature player!

I play Eve for a few reasons. I enjoy the single shard universe. It is great that every person who plays, does so in the same space. I love the fact that this game has "real loss" when you loose a ship/pod. Most games you come back to life with all your stuff and you go about your business no worse for wear. In Eve, you can potentially loose everything. I like that. I also play because of the completely player driven economy. I like working the markets and producing my own modules/ships.
Myself: I am 30, married with no kids. (One is probably coming in a year or so) I am an Air Traffic Manager in the NorthEast US. So I do not have much time to do much else.
Good luck with your project.

I am 32 and a student of medicine. I have played a lot of mmo¦s really. The only satisfaction with this games is the competition with other players. Have more/better items, have more money or are the best killer, have the best corp/guilde/alliance. For what reason? To get confirmation of the other players without the need to get it from RL. Its all about getting emotional things from a game in an easier way then in your rl....thats all about it

Edited by: RabbidFerret on 17/12/2009 19:00:47 Tbh I almost never play eve anymore due to time restrictions. I stay subbed because I really like what CCP is doing with the game and I think it's the only game worth the money atm.
When I did play, I played for the community and the brutal, harsh atmosphere. I loved watching dumb people get eaten up by eve's own application of Darwin.
Edit: I'm a game designer by profession.

hey hey
initially i never wanted to play and i always hated the mmolg thingy.
my first ever foray into online gaming was "delta force" and although i really despise war games the whole online element interested me. .
i opened the coffe tray and inserted the disc. went online created character etc and "spawned" then within a few seconds of getting bearings i was dead.
respawned . . . dead
respawned ... dead
ejected disc and never played online again.
a friend of mine introduced me and i refused to play but i eventually got a decent job, decent pc, and decent connection. tried eve and never looked back.
i STILL remember my first few hours playing being totally fustrated and not getting anywhere; the learning curve really was a cliff in those days but at least i wasnt dead.
after meeting a few people in local and slowly learning AT MY OWN PACE i eventually managed to join a corp and new eden life totally changed.
what amazed me so much then and still does (but to a lesser extent) was that you could survive solo or corp, build, mine, shoot stuff, pvp, pve and pretty much do anything you wanted with the exception of skills. the graphics were decent and spaceships have always been something the kid inside me just enjoys.
discovering its an adult game and not kiddies spawn camping and bashing macros out with G15 keyboards etc made me stay.
some times people say eve isnt noob friendly but its actually completely friendly to new pilots as your pretty much 100% safe and have time to learn and play. yes the learning curve is steep but you do have time. harsh environment but certainly new player friendly.
i still ocasionally go online with the ps3 but its not changed much and people will still spawn camp you and the FPS after FPS is just the same game in a different skin (GL with dust514). the new thing is the discos cause people dont want to lose whatever they are fighting with. DC'ing for draw points etc and basic metagaming still puts me off.

I got tired of returning to ultima online which has been dead for more years than I can count.
Things I like:
Loss = fear = adrenaline rush Competition Revenge (that equates to loss and real meaning) From 1v1 to mass fleet strategy Politics and spies actually matter Character age is rewarded Characters are unique in training ISK = Power
Look at single player games that support modding and see what people develop for mods. Most make the games harder and add support for choices and consequences. That's what people want. A challenge, where your decisions matter. Eve provides that. It also allows a 5 year player to have a more powerful character than a 2 month old character, but in player experience as well as character experience. Both matter. At the same time, the same game mechanic allows you to build that 5 year character without putting massive amounts of time into the game.

1. Meeting people from all over the world. Never in my life have I interacted so regularly with such a diverse group of mature, intelligent nerds.
2. Adult setting. No, I don't mean XXX. I mean, on it's absloute dumbest days, NPC Corp chat is still 10x more intelligent than the trade channel in WoW. On it's best days, it's like listening to the BBC or NPR.
3. Genuine RISK. EVE is the ultimate game of Risk Management. Reward scales with risk expended. No other game rewards contingency planning, analysis, and pure guts so well.
4. PvP. When's the last time your heart was pounding in WoW?

I finished my post and then read this, so consider myself guilty as well.
But I think it says a lot. Having played a good many MMOs, EVE is the only one I've found where they are genuinely proud of their game and their impact on it.
One trip to fanfest and it's clearly obvious, that this is a tight knit community. Developers arn't sequestered in towers handing down rewards for faith from on high, but on the ground with the players, doing stuff. All screwups aside, no other game allows it's players to make such an impact.
People are able to be part of something here, and everyone knows deep down that success, fame, or notoriety are within reach of those who work for it, and that means something to these people as opposed to being another faceless warrior in WoW or EQ.

Ok, about myself
26 - IT professional with a tad of customer service role.
I spend each day being decent to people that speak down to me. I laugh at their dumb jokes, and take their grief when they shout. I am a pirate ingame, but really a decent bloke IRL. Simply, I now play eve to ruin the day of other people. It's not their fault, it's merely a product of my total flipside of a lifestyle.
