Edited by: Evyx Cervin on 18/12/2009 21:22:05 Now that the Dominion changes are upon us, it looks to be much easier for smaller corporations to take space for themselves.
That said, a few of my friends and I are toying with the idea.
If we were to form a small alliance with about 6 members (people, not corps), would it be plausible or practical for us to find an out-of-the way system and hold sovereignty, moon mine, rat/plex, and do all the other things space-holding alliances can do?
We all know what hard work it all is and whatnot, but seeing as how holding wide swaths of space is now extremely expensive, I see many uncontested areas all over the place so that we do not get rolled the first time a random blob passes through our system.
Either way, this is all just speculation. Good idea y/n?

You would get stomped on if it is 'claimed' space. However with 6 man corp, if you are all active players one could already pull off the 0.0 live reasonably well. So try to see if any of the alliances would be willing to recruit a 6 man corp. Some of them just might be desperate enough if you are good at talking. Most of them tend to rurn down anything under 20 memebers without talking at all. If you have alts (like those extra 2 spare slots on each account) stick them into your corp to boost up numbers, so the alliance recruiters are more likely to at least talk to you.

our whole plan revolves around unclaimed space.
If we actually decided to do this, it would be weeks of scouting and observing to find a location way out of the way from the baddies.
Then we just have to worry about logistics to this far-off place

It seems like the popular thing to do is to come to Querious and drop a few towers.

Which is entirely the wrong thing to do. If you're interested in claiming an unclaimed bit of Querious I might be able to help you with the process.

just because systems aren't sov'd doesn't mean they aren't 'owned' by something.
prepare to pay hefty rent or just stay mining veld in empire

There is no unclaimed space in 0.0 - would suggest you to try wormholes in that regard instead. Even if the sov is not claimed every single system of conventional 0.0 is claimed by some group. Even the NPC areas. They enforce that claim ofc with various degree of sucsess, but only 6 pilots do not stand against numbers those entities can field. You can make a living with that size group in NPC 0.0, but it's also hard and you must know very well what you are doing to pull it off with reasonable level of sucsess (where sucsess is not dying more than you can afford).

Is it *poosible*? Yes. Is it *probable*? No.
For starters there is the logistics problem (getting stuff to and from your little system). Then there will be dealing with the 'natives' when they discover you (and they will sooner or later--you'll end up on sov maps at the very least)
Honestly, your best bet would be to join an established 0.0 corp as a whole (all 6 of you) and use it as a learning experience. You can still maintain your tight-knit community of friends by creating a private chat channel.
If you are absolutely hellbent on claiming your slice of the heavens, then you would probably do very well in a wormhole where you wouldn't have to worry about dreads/roaming fleets of BSs.

I'd say the only way it is possible is to claim an empty and unimportant system (no high end moons, no strategic position) and only buy lvl1 upgrades. The more upgrades you buy, the more interesting it would be for an alliance to kick you out. But then you'll have to ask yourself if you want to live in space with crappy upgrades. AND getting the infrastructure hub down there is going to be a real challenge :) x |

Possible to claim a system? Probably. Possible to keep the system for more than a few days? Nope not a snowballs chance. If you can become a renter somewhere then maybe. But not by yourself as a holder.
For example, you would really need to have access to a station in your system. That is a huge investment and the effort of getting that there is to say the least large and if you manage to get it there the people around you will notice and stomp on you.
If you want to be a holder take a look at how large the alliances that hold fairly small and crappy areas are. It is 5-600+ people and then they are pets of larger alliances still. Smallest "independant" alliance is probably PL or around that size which is 1200 or so. So recruit or go to wormholes, my suggestion is wormholes.
