I noticed recently that catalyst has a "radio antenna"-like wingybit that sweeps above the ****pit. It really adds alot to the character of a ship I think, which are otherwise appear static and inanimate (other than the blinking lights, meh). Who wouldn't want to see ships with animated opening of their drone bay say, or turrets/launchers that show a "coming online" animation?
So, are there other ships with similar "cool touches" of animation?

I quite like the zephyr animation on the sails, also the sphere that the game engine recognizes as a ship seems to have been moved so the center of the sphere is near the front of the ship, it's subtle but looks very graceful when turning. _________________________________________________ Lifeboat ----> + Human |

yeah the mining barges look great with the animations. little touches but they really help you in imagining that you are flying a 400m long factory running full steam deep in space :)

Catalyst. Barges. Rorqual (if the deploy animation counts).
About it really for player ships. The drone Dominix has a LOT of animation on it (antennas, the little legs and the ramora attached to the face).
If I remember, the original sketches for the Tristan had its wings folding down in "battle mode". But never made it in to the game.
Always surprised me that CCP didn't put in more twidly bits with Trinity as you're right the little radomes and such give the ships a bit of character.

Edited by: Kaylee Juuna on 21/12/2009 01:16:21 More animations on ship = much more engaging.
Instead of, "Oh, I'm flying a plastic model of a ship in space. I'm playing a video game. I'm sitting in front of a computer, wasting my life", it could be something like...
"I'm am grate pilat of the vacuum, surrenduring to me nao or face explosion of space pixels."

The eris replaces the radar dish of the catalyst with a light it moves back and forth, the cormorant has 4 lights under it that move back and forth too as if they should be scanning the hull of a large ship or the surface of a planet. -------------------------------------------------

There is no need for the server to sync animation data, unless we are talking about tracking turrets etc, that actually track you ship and your client is notified about their aiming direction all the time etc...
The animation sequence and all the GFX/Textures etc are stored and computed locally by your PC-client, so no lag should be involved, as the animation is repeated in exact intervals and it's not linked to your ships orientation or actual speed etc...
Sounds on the other hand, like turrets firing etc, are synced globally, and to an extend is logical to expect higher server loads when a lot of ppl on the same grid "demand" sound fx syncronized to the actual fight. Just like drones would affect it for the same reason...not because of their locally stored textures, but because those are so many in busy fleet fights and fly so inconsistently and so fast...each drone is line an extra ship with a single turret on it...

More animation would be awesome. Sure in reality a spaceship ain't designed for the looks, but what says a game can't be entertaining a bit? x)

.. those are all that I know of turrets used to have a nice firing animation, where the barrels would be pushed back by recoil.. has been missing since Apocrypha though :) (I smile because I tend to bugreport it every now and then :D ) ____________ nerf metagaming, boost fun |

Things with that low of a polygon count wouldn't affect the game at all. Unless you're running on a Pentium II and a Voodoo 3, maybe.
1 ship in grid with animations, cool. 5 ships, cooler. 50 ships, no problem. 200 ships, wont effect much. 500+ ships in grid with lots of tiny bits moving constantly... that may cause some problems i think. Unless closing effects stops animations also.

the EOS used to have a chin mounted scanning radar dish, heck it could be still there but since the EOS sucks such a large quantity of donkey genitalia and no ones flys it - i have no recent evidence!

Graphics have nothing to do with lag, you may get low fps under some very unrealistic situations, but not lag... Graphics are renderd by your graphiccard and not by servers.

The Catalyst was designed as homage to the venerable WWII B-17, and the rotating Radar is probably homage to the first ever radar used by the Brits in the Battle of Britain.
The rest of the Gallente line is homage to the byproducts of the meat processing industry and sex-toy industry.
