Not to start a flame flinging contest or anything.. but for a longtime eve player thats recently returned after an almost year long break to focus on going back to college.. im a bit out of date on news =P
I stumbled across the Dust 514 video's and news a day or so ago and its actualy what nudged me back into EVE again.. was planning to come back anyway just came back earlier than i'd origionaly planned. I saw mention in one of the 'what we know' lists that at some point, their planning to let the players of Dust, mingle with the EVE players in the stations once that expansion ever comes out.
Im just currious if the "Walking in Stations" is still something CCP is working on.. or has it stayed inside the "when its ready" a.k.a. 2099 release schedule still? --------------------------------------------- "Only two great species on this planet take part in massive, organized warfare. It is called Incarna now and they released a teaser trailer during last fanfest. No official dates on release, but some speculate, that it might be coming after the next expansion(planetary interaction).

Stubborn troll is stubborn
They will have to give us a reason to leave our pods, but I am actually quite looking forward to it, as I hope it will add another layer of immersion to what is in my opinion, the most immersive game I have ever played.

Incarna will only be truly great if they just go crazy with the adult themes. Let us get loaded, have fistfights, gawk at virtual strippers breastises, buy cheap contraband boosters from some shifty guy, and then crash in our rooms.
The entire EVE universe is pretty full of that 'gritty' stuff, in text format for missions or stories and whatnot, so it would be kind of odd if it's all sunshine and lollipops inside stations. If it's just going to have that little minigame and customizable living quarters i agree it won't add much.

Well from what i remember, i know you will 'not' be able to stab some big Corp/Aliance leader's character with a spoon.. but, they did mention haveing a sort of mini-game thing you could do to pass time on, giveing us access to the market while in the stations, and there were a few actual 'game/fleet/aliance' related things as well. and at one point and time, their thinking of makeing that Dust 154? eve spinoff have access to the Stations as well.
And even if the Walking in stations turns out to be nothing but a chat-room type thing, i'll still like it simply because it lets you see something other than your ship for a change. --------------------------------------------- "Only two great species on this planet take part in massive, organized warfare. I can't see any point to Walking in Stations either.
If CCP wants to increase player immersion, how about modernizing the GUI?

Because no matter how good the GUI is, some people find it hard to empathise with a completely disposable mechanical object like a ship, and want to occasionally view their character and socialise with their friends and corpies "in person"?
I know it's hard for all you uber-l33t types who view EvE as a sophisticated, space-based Counterstrike, but there are a few of us who would enjoy such trivialities as "dressing up", minigames, roleplay etc etc.

I'm looking forward to 'walking in stations' mainly because no game to date has ever implemented such a feature and it's always exciting to watch gaming technology evolve. Who knows. It could re-shape everyone's view of the genre and become the de facto standard for all future space games.

Unfortuntely, EVE is rated "T", so I doubt that stuff will be allowed if they want to keep their rating.
I would love to see them add all those adult themes and just embrace the "M" rating.

Yes, lets all hail STO. It can't even get warping right and instead uses a loading screen when you warp, but hey, no biggy, right?

No you won't because you'll leave your ship and find less than a handful of people in the walking about areas. And those guys will be afk.
Without actual "game" content, WiS will be a fad novelty that will wear off in about 6 weeks after release. Hence the whole criminal underworld vibe for incarna.
I'd rather see CCP take their time and develop something awe-inspiringly good than:-
a) ingame shops b) 2 mini games (eve poker and eve stratego) c) agents you have to walk to to activate.
Out of everything eve is about pew. Incarna should begin with some rudimentary pew system, even if its just a western style gun duel on a very basic level.

I don't know where you live but in my society things work like this.
Showing murder is good, showing love is bad.
Removing someones head is okay, giving someone head is not.
Banging some chick is bad, banging her head in with a hammer is rockin'.
Glorifying drug use is bad, lighting the drug user on fire is cool.
How in god's name we ended up so twisted is beyond me. But there you go. You will never see a hint of sex or even sexy in this game or any other game that wishes to keep a teen rating. Just new and interesting ways of killing, maiming, murdering and various other evil stuff.

I am excited about the WiS too. Just for a change of pace...
However -
My experience is when a developer tries to cross that divide between controlling a vehicle to controlling a person - the mechanics, character animations and general feel is horrible. This will be the same if EVE allowed ppl. to go to planet surfaces. While could be interesting, it can also serve to be disasterous if character animations and control mechanics are cluncky.
Also - hopefully, WiS and Planetside activities can be "optional" for a change of pace and not required via missions etc. After all - EVE is about our ships, our flying and combat skills - it is the foundation that has grown to what EVE is today. I'm concerned if extra-ship activities could dilute that feeling of the lonliness of space.
I saw STO (Star Trek Online) mentioned. If you want to see cluncky character animations and controls, check it out. The characters' animations are very stiff and not fluid at all.
Even the Mighty MMO WoW - had issues with weaving the character controls with vehicle controls when they introduced it Via WOLK. The vehicle controls are cluncking and not nearly as responsive as the character controls.
IMO, mixing the two mechanics (Ship vs. Character) can be a very tricky feat to pull of in a manner that will not damage what EVE is known for.
I will admit, I like the idea of WiS (plant side less so) - IF they get the character mechanics / control and animations perfected.

+1. Like you say, the above three are all terrible ideas. Maybe 'c' is ok for some missions or as part of a mission to complete? ---------------------- They're angry there was damage done to their ship. It's not difficult! |

Station mini game to kill time like poker and stratego sound nice. Often I find myself with nothing to do for half an hour - this would be a nice addition.

There isn't really anything wrong with the 3 points above, as long as they are side dishes and not the main course. I have a feeling that C will figure pretty strongly into what they want to do however, which all things considered might not be too bad.

The ability to exit your ship and be more than a bucket of bolts is a bad thing for the game? Are you kidding? It's only expanding it into more!

Whats even worse, ST:O will be heavily instanced. Its one big server, but with multiple instances of each zone, and many pocket instances for the mission areas. So it's not a MMO really.
Instancing sucks, Everquest and Vanguard were the last real fantasy MMOs I played.
Anyway, I look forward to ambulation. I believe some day EvE will allow us all the things you would want in a game. Spacebattles, conquering, barfights, planetary fighting, atmospheric flight etc etc.
CCP is smart for not letting the game stagnate but really evolve it. No other MMO has done that in this scale before. And thats the reason why EvE is still gaining numbers, and will keep gaining numbers. EvE will be around for a loooong time.
And we should be glad we were here from the start ;)

I'm not looking forward to walking in station, as it's not what I play eve for, but I acknowledge that for others it is a big deal and they can't wait for it.
The concerns I've got are: How much developer time this will take away from the core of eve, and when problems occur they will have a whole new ball game to sort. The pc specifications required if they'll increase demand or not, there are probably quite a few players that run on only just machines, especially the multiboxers who have 1 good pc and maybe a couple of cheaper ones. Will I have to go walk to the agent and grovel at his feet for work, or will I be able to just sit in the ship and call him from the docking bay.
But hopefully all these will be answered when the time comes closer to it being a reality instead of a pipe dream.

Unbeknownst to some people who play EVE the game does actually extend beyond doing the same five missions again and again in your lovely little cookie-cutter CNR.
Some people even ROLEPLAY those "Non-PVE" (This is probably a term you've never heard before) aspects!
Walking in stations will ONLY add to the game, there is no way in which it can detract from the current experience AND a different team is working on it so NO, you wouldn't be getting better stuff instead if they weren't developing it.
Ok?
I for one am looking forward to it, it will add a great amount of depth and character to an already stunning game. ______________________________________________

Well they could make incarna the first paid for expansion, and from there get it rated as a different game experience seperate from everything else. I wouldn't mind paying for it if it was a world unto itself, and judging from most of the comments whenever this comes up there's a number of people who have no interest in it at all, and just want to stay in space, so they wouldn't care if it cost money to do or not.

I agree entirely, but if they want to keep the T rating there's ways around all that ESRB silliness. A breast will only corrupt people if there is a nipple visible, for instance. And they could add some kind of thing to the story about how pod pilots have green blood or something, and since it's not red they won't deem it offensive no matter how much of a bloodbath goes on. As for drugs, they could just make all of them come in pill format for incarna, and manufactured by pharmaceutical companies, since we all know pills are as wholesome and harmless as apple pie, right?
My deepest sympathies. Prof. Tarantula, Esq. |
