I've mainly been doing NPC hunting since I started but have done quite a lot of missions as well (about 50 or so at a guess). My caldari standing has done up to 1.03 in all that time. I try to pick the highest quality agent available to me (all level 1). I have never got an implant and don't seem to be getting anywhere towards progressing to L2 missions. What am I doing wrong? It gets a bit boring doing L1 in a caracal - warp in, press 5 buttons and collect the wreckage!

Your caldari standing will increase only through doing "important missions" which you get given randomly every so often. The implants are given out again at random as a reward for important missions. So the chance of getting one is not very high.
The standing for the corp you are working for should also be incrreasing a lot faster than the faction standing, and when that gets to a reasonable level (somewhere around 2.0 you will be able to use level 2, 0 quality agents within the same corp).
The Connections skill will help you a lot, as it increases your standing, a level or 2 in it should give enough of a boost to access level 2 agents.
While waiting for these to train, you could buy a frigate (not a kestral as that will be just as boring) and do the missions, it will take a bit more thinking about rather than warp in, shoot, collect... and it goes faster so you can collect the cans quicker.
Hope that helps

It's not that random
you get a important mission 5 - 20 mission after your last important mission. So the first four their 0% chance of get a inportant mission and if you have done 19 normal their is a 100% chance of get a important mission. The higher you standing with the agent the higher you chnace of getting a inportant mission befor the 20th mission.
Agent will give item the corp sells on the market as bounse or tech II parts (some mission will all give blue prints or name modual theo). checking what the npc corp supplys befor you run mission form them if you don't want 1000 garbish.
Also agent have 4 - 6 inportant mission and their 2 important mission (agent only have one theo) that give attribte implants which are:
Important - Fight For The Establishment (kill)
Important - Transaction Data delivery (courier)
if you agent has 4 inportant mission you have a 1 in 4 chance to get a implant
tually your chance of getting an important mission, is every 4- 20 (minus your standing with agent) normal missions.
so if you have a standing of 0.0, that would mean every 4- 20 mission could be an important one. and with a standing of 10.0 (wich is not really possible, but that's neither here nor there) every 4- 10 missions could be an important one.
