Hail capsuleers,
I'm deployed with the US Air Force somewhere in the middle east. The base is fairly hardened, and we have (obviously by this post) commerical internet for commercial purposes. Well the new rotation of network guys have finally settled in and have started making improvements.
First thing they started working on was improving Wifi coverage- Great! Next thing they did was block "unneccesary" ports for outgoing traffic.
They did this Christmas Eve, mind you. They cut off my EVE Online the day before Christmas. Jerks.
Eitherhow, I find myself unable to fly or even so much as switch skills for another 4-5 months. Should I continue to pay for EVE for the use of the forums? Does CCP's banhammer know no mercy, that my skills cannot be switched by a trustworthy comrade from stateside?
Regards,

Holy ****, Cat in my thread? I'm honored. Will you sign my defencemobile?
Um, well, its kind of a joke... that got sort of out of hand... but more or less no, because they'd throw me in prison. Lol

IIRC, it's not an EULA violation for a member of your immediate family to access your account.
However, dont fire off any petitions if your wife undocks your Machariel and shoots the station with it.

You just tunnel the EVE connection through an SSH tunnel or something.

If you don't ask they can't say no. However as Malcanis say, if bad things happen to your char/assets during this time you will be on your own.

I'd love to... Unfortunately the region tends to be rather gestapo-ish about their internet, and all public proxies are blocked. I'd run one myself, but I'm without permanent residence, as I'm between apartments for my stint out of the nation.
Anybody have any experience running a hosted SSH tunnel? Can it be confirmed that one can use EVE over a tunnel like this?

Go to your IT guys. Explain it's your entertainment. Give them EVE's port number. you may find them a lot more accomodating to you guys then you think. Then again, I've never dealt with Military IT Dept's, so what do I know.. :)

You're making it too difficult. Either
a) Find out what game they're playing, then blackmail them to open the EVE port for you,
or
b) Get them hooked on EVE, then either ask or blackmail them to open the port for you, too.

Ask first, let them decide if it's a security risk. An SSH tunnel might be a bad idea, depending on how anal the OIC is.
If that doesn't work, try horsetrading. Case of beer for a port might work, or some kind of souveneirs, especially something they can make up war stories about when talking to their grandkids. Again, might be a bad idea if the OIC has major pucker going on.
If THAT doesn't work, let a trusted family member run things. Prepare to not be upset when your faction ship get ****d, pillaged, and laughed at for shooting a Concord frigate. Or traded for something shiny. "This Machariel thing is ugly. Oooooo....That Slicer looks so COOL! Trade me!"

Assuming they didn't block everything and then whitelist certain ports (HTTP(s), POP etc) then you should try the alternative port for EVE. You can get the info from somewhere on eve-o, or maybe the wiki.

Good info.
Unfortunately, this seems to be a typical military whitelist... HTTP, HTTPS, maybe some VoIP, and World of Warcraft. Freakin' IT guys.

Military IT guys are not accommodating. In fact I would probably be looked at like a terrorist to ask them to open any port, even with a perfectly valid application that would use it. "Yeah, good cover up for that new Al-Qaeda worm, *******."
But I will give it a shot anyway :)

Unless you were joking about the Warcraft ports, you have a good case, especially since it's military culture. Just explain you're playing a game like Warcraft, only without all that frou-frou bull****. Also Warcraft is for pansies. _ |

Let them know that this US tax payer says that it's cool for you to play the game and I have that authority to say so because I pay 1/138,000,000th of their salary.
Thanks for your service and hope you get things sorted, man. ---
