I have two questions about harvester drones. First, do I need any special skills to use them? I currently have Drones lvl 4, and Mining Drones lvl 4. Second question, I don't mind paying a lot for the harvestors, but I keep hearing that mining barges will make them obsolete. What's the real story behind this? If I buy up a bunch of harvies right now, will I be wasting my isk? Please advise.

u dont need any skillz other than the usual drones and mining drones skill
Yes they are expensive but they are worth it if u make a living from mining. using 8 of these effectively gives u about 290 (with ur mining drones bonus) extra ore per cycle (note: mining drones take longer than 60secs due to travel time).
How mining barges will make harvies obsolete i dont know. Maybe they mean the new mining drones although it still isnt confirmed that these are coming with shiva. Basically they may introduce standard/advanced/elite versions (15m3, 20m3 and 25m3 respectively) but even so, the harvester will still be the best mining drone available.
They pay for themselves pretty quickly, so if u are a miner by trade then they are well worth the money. Just be careful cos they are NPC rat bait and they pop damn easily

Here is the trick to using mining drones.
Instead of killing the spawn and then mining, Find a way to mine and have the NPCs shoot you at the same time. This is called tank mining. Once the NPCs are shooting you and you are sure you can hold out running everything indefinitely, release your mining drones and the NPCs will not shoot them.
Nor will they shoot your hauler.

Thanks to all who responded. EyeShadow, I am a miner (industrialist actually) by trade, so I will be taking your advice. As far as fighting while mining, I usually mine with an Osprey which allows me to fight off most rats in Nonni, while continuing to mine.

i don't know were youve been but elite/standars/ and advanced mineing drones have been out in the game for a long time.
some members of the aliance i'm in have some. and to prove it once they put them into the market for like 10 million each.
so don't think that they will be released when they are alredy in the usable and in the market... good luck finding someone to sell you 1 without paying a massive amount of money.

Wrong. They were released accidentally on convoys, and at the same time their entries were propagated onto the market so they can be sold there. They weren't supposed to be in game, and there are no blueprints, and their supply has since been retracted.
And yes, I have some.

You don't need any special skills beyond the ability to use a normal basic minind drone to use Harvestors...but at the price they go for (they are not cheap) better not to use them. I paid 650k for mine which I thought was expensive for a mining drone, then recently while using them got d/c'd with them in space, and logged back on to find them inactive and under fire from NPCs. I lost one which at current prices for 4mill plus each are just not worth replacing. So I put seven on escrow and some chump paid 4mill each. I made 25m and never have to have the anxiety that comes from the fear of losing even one. Not to mention that with them taking 100m^3 drone space compared to the 50m^3 of normal mining drones it's freed up space for more scout drones to deal with those NPCs.
If they were easily replaced, there would be no problem, but as long as they are priced as they are, there's just no justification to the cost. Sure 8 of them mine like 3 Miner IIs, but I'd rather mine a little slower than end up losing isk whenever I mine and lose one (make x mill, lose y mill). Mining should make money, not lose :) Once mining drone BPOs are available (if) then it'll be much more worthwhile as the Elite one in particular is half the size of the Harvestor, mines just as much, and can be built from a blueprint.
