I have created this alt to become a pirate (my main is a carebear, don't judge me). I've been following the Beginer's Guide to Piracy by Skira Ranos and have a decently fitted Rifter. My question is this: While my skills are training up to be decently worthwhile in a true PvP fight, what can I do to practice the pirate's life without getting my a$$ handed to me every 5 minutes? I've been fighting rats in 0.5 sec with no real challenge, and I'm not sure I can survive in low-sec yet.
PS, I'm also looking for a good pirating corp that can train a noob pirate who is a casual player, mostly weekends.

Hmmm, 0.3 sec. Me thinks that may be a little too much for me on my own in a rifter. I may not even survive the trip just getting there. |

Just get out there and do it...you will learn nothing from belt rats. Make sure you have 5 or so ships fully set up and ready to go and dont be afraid to lose them. If nothing else practice using the D-Scanner in high sec..scan on 360 choose a ship and practice finding them by narrowing your scans down. This will be your bread and butter as a low sec pirate so the better you get the more successfull you will be. Some more usefull information can be found on our forums

To learn to swim, you have to get in the water first.
It's not as hard as it looks.

Just get out there and kill shi t and if you die learn from it and then just keep on going from there.

If you really want to learn about piracy, get a cheap mining barge and hit up the low sec belts.
You will meet a lot of real pirates that way.

Well, that's sort of the point, isn't it? You might not survive the trip but as long as you figure out why you didn't, you'll do better next time, right? Just stock up one some spare rifters so you don't have to screw around getting replacements and you can dive right back in...
You'll probably get the snot knocked out of you the first 50 times, but you'll get better, and (insane match-ups aside), real skill beats skill points 9 times out of 10. (I've got reasonably high SP and I routinely get beaten by newer toons who just flew better on the day or had a fit that beat mine. Of course that's probably because I'm rubbish - but I can't be the only one).

Really? Wanna PvP? I wouldn't mind winning my first fight.

Stock up on Rifters. You have been a carebear so you should have the extra funds.
Head out to a boarder low sec region, despite whether itÆs 0.1 or 0.4. Fight other frigÆs to start with and even try your hand at taking down some cruisers (no drone ships). You may get your backside handed to you a few times but you will quickly get the feel for it.
Get T2 guns ASAP. Constantly ask yourself what went wrong, what mistakes were made, what went right, how to tweak your tactics or fitting to help you come out on top next time.
Here is a little gem of advice. Find a good pirate corp killboard(s) and study their fits. Not just the corps that beat an opponent 15 vs. 1. That will tell you little. Look for pilots in those corps who solo and look at their losses for fittings.
Enjoy and good luck.

Done. Your Rifter vs my Nidhoggur, mano-a-mano. .
The other thing you may want to read, if you haven't already, is the rifter guide on Wensley's Blog. http://www.rifterdrifter.com/rifter-pvp-guide/ . He's gone all schmick and flying HACs now but it's worth a read.

getting your a$$ handed to you repeatedly IS the best possible way to learn... do it while your ships are cheap and plentiful so that when you're flying t2 with t2 fittings you've made all the mistakes from which you learn.
basically... get out there and start losing ships. attack EVERYTHING, rifters with t1/named are practically free with insurance, there's no excuse.

Actually you should be able to reach that lowsec destination just fine. It's what you do when you get there, thats what you need to worry about.

This.
T1 frigs are cheap, and plentiful. If you live in 0.0 where the market doesn't have the fittings, buy the BPO's for the ship and all the t1 fittings(still cheap as hell) and build them with melted rat loot.
Set a destination to somewhere in New Eden, and just go. Don't stop. Anything by itself you attack it until you die/it dies/local spikes. While dying, think about what the ships doing, how fast it can move, what weapons it's using, what tackle it's fitting, how much damage is it doing to you, what sort of tank is it fitting, how hard is it's tank, is it active or buffer, is it's weapons tracking you, does it have a neut, how many drones does it launch, are they medium/large/small/ECM drones. And start making a mental list of the more comment fittings for the various ships If local spikes and you can't escaped, take note of how long the various ship sizes take to arrive, where they arrive (distance from you/your target).
Just learn. Let death be your teacher. She's a harsh one, but the best --------------------------------------------

EDIT: Also the BIG thing. Getting over the fear of dying and loosing. And the fear of being shot at.
+1 to this suggestion. I'm actually going to get some of those bpo's myself and start doing the same, free ships can't be all that bad!
If you want to find decent fits check out battleclinic but other than that, just pick your battles cleverly and fight to your strengths.
Best of luck to you in your pirating adventure.

Just go out there and have some fun, your list of lost ships might be longer for a while, but that is always due to change ;)

You are in a frigate, you should align and warp before anything could lock you.
