So which one is it? Do they flicker or is it like REAL space? ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

that is extreamly pretty, even without aonther screenshot which would show the flickering.
WTB same for Nvidia cards.

on further testing, I suspect it is because of the Temporal AA setting (being turned on), not because of the LOD tweak.
I'm using a 4850 card.
can anyone who has done the same share some experience pls?

I've found the optimized setting.
Temporal AA: x3 (or whatever is highest) This allows any excess rendering capacity of the graphic card (>60fps) turned into pretty AA. This works with HDR and bloom turned on as well!!! This is actually the only solution for the AA+HDR problem I know.
LOD tweak: -1 While -10 to -2 gives excess flickering of the starfield (like a xmas tree), -1 gives a big boost over the original setting 0 (very distant stars visible and slightly flickering, bigger stars stay still) and won't give so much distracting flickers. PERFECT.

right click the little triangle on the bottom right of the panel, click "align top" or something like that, than drag it (capacitor indicator) to the left.
that is how i did it.

Hi Ms. Spank cat here
there are a number of options for customising your modules and targets. you can drag the HUD by click/dragging the capacitor thingymejig. you can select from the menu to align top. and on targets there is a secret hidden crosshair (usually behind the selected item thingy) to move the targets around.
No need to thank me, just help me sort out my sticky out hair lol and i will sort out your itchy lady ornaments for you

Edited by: Druadan on 05/01/2010 01:54:42 Currently trying to get this sorted on my PC but Microsoft have decided that I'm not allowed to install whatever I want on my PC under Vista-64, so the low-level driver that ATI Tray Tool uses is being blocked.
Cheers Microsoft, I really enjoy being treated like a **** who doesn't know the first thing about computers. That's exactly what I went to uni for. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

the flickering is caused by the atmosphere, it has nothing to do with the light source being from a star or a planet.

Edited by: Druadan on 05/01/2010 02:29:26 Got it working (although I have to press F8 to select a boot option) and I am impressed. Now I just need to see if Windows 7 is as vehement about silly driver requirements as Vista is, so I can switch up and not need to press F8 everytime I boot up just to let ATI Tray Tool do its stuff.
Cheers for the tip OP.
A further tip to those trying to achieve this: I didn't get nearly as stunning a result as the OP did at first, and then I realised my shader options were still on Low from a time when I had to underclock my processor. I set it back to high and WHOOSH, lovely star-fields ahoy. Just beautiful. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

I'm almost positive that texture LOD levels can be set by the game engine/artists, so that you wouldn't need to manually change it through ATI tools. Of course this can be overridden by enabling an "LOD texture clamp" in the drivers, but still...
CCP should look into this and see if they can enable this to everyone by default through the game engine. The typical downsides of negative LOD are flickering/shimmering textures, but since we're talking about a star field here slightly shimmering stars won't hurt anyone.

I have a GeForce GTX 285 on WIn7 x64. I set the LOD to be allowed to go negative in the normal nvidia drivers...got the same result as OP. Thanks for pointing this out, OP, but it's not as annoying to get with Nvidia cards. :P

I guess you could say a pulsar "flickers". Most everything else is very constant afaik. But if you like the flickering, just imagine your ship has a bubble of 1.0832073*10^12km¦ air attached to itself. -

I must ask, what resolution are you using in order for the starbox not to look like pixelated garbage? I'm using 1280x1024, which is probably far too low, and getting ass ugly shimmering effects w/ 8xS AA (1x2 SS + 4x MS).

Same here, but mine was already set to "Allow to go negative". Well, my card is a 8600GT, but it still gives pretty stars like the OP worked so hard for. =========================

I use 1650x1050.
I guess since everyone uses different resolutions you will have to experiment yourself to find out your own optimal LOD setting.
(if -1 already gives too much shimmering for you, I guess this tweak won't work for you unless there is a -0.5 or something. I'm not sure tho.)

Does this take a lot more of your graphics card ?
Because my screen is 1920*1080 and I'm running it with a Mobility Radeon HD 4560, don't know if it'll take even more punch?

Surely all the quickly rotating star types would have a 'flicker' - hence we can hypothecise that they are rotating in the first place? :)
Besides, space in EVE is a fluid, so why not have flickering stars? :P

For Temproal AA: maybe, because it only activates itself when your card can run excess fps (above 60) so it shouldn't cause any noticable degrade.
For LOD tweak: a tiny little bit, but you won't notice the FPS drop.

I don't see much of a difference... more contrast?
and the letters on the "improved" pic look blurred, this is a consequence of AA. Dude, you dont want a blurred UI whose letter size is ... ehr... tiny.
