on further testing, I suspect it is because of the Temporal AA setting (being turned on), not because of the LOD tweak.
I'm using a 4850 card.
can anyone who has done the same share some experience pls?

I've found the optimized setting.
Temporal AA: x3 (or whatever is highest) This allows any excess rendering capacity of the graphic card (>60fps) turned into pretty AA. This works with HDR and bloom turned on as well!!! This is actually the only solution for the AA+HDR problem I know.
LOD tweak: -1 While -10 to -2 gives excess flickering of the starfield (like a xmas tree), -1 gives a big boost over the original setting 0 (very distant stars visible and slightly flickering, bigger stars stay still) and won't give so much distracting flickers. PERFECT.

I'm loving my new Hi-Def starfield lol

Originally by: Lady Spank how do you move the module panel around like that?
right click the little triangle on the bottom right of the panel, click "align top" or something like that, than drag it (capacitor indicator) to the left.
that is how i did it.

Originally by: Allen Ramses I must ask, what resolution are you using in order for the starbox not to look like pixelated garbage? I'm using 1280x1024, which is probably far too low, and getting ass ugly shimmering effects w/ 8xS AA (1x2 SS + 4x MS).
I use 1650x1050.
I guess since everyone uses different resolutions you will have to experiment yourself to find out your own optimal LOD setting.
(if -1 already gives too much shimmering for you, I guess this tweak won't work for you unless there is a -0.5 or something. I'm not sure tho.)

Originally by: Zandmannetje Does this take a lot more of your graphics card ?
Because my screen is 1920*1080 and I'm running it with a Mobility Radeon HD 4560, don't know if it'll take even more punch?
For Temproal AA: maybe, because it only activates itself when your card can run excess fps (above 60) so it shouldn't cause any noticable degrade.
For LOD tweak: a tiny little bit, but you won't notice the FPS drop.

Originally by: Scout Ops I don't see much of a difference... more contrast?
and the letters on the "improved" pic look blurred, this is a consequence of AA. Dude, you dont want a blurred UI whose letter size is ... ehr... tiny.
turn off pictures autosize in browser?

I want to say something about the "shimmering":
I bought up the topic simply because, at LOD -2 the shimmering (because of the starbox texture becomes too sharp) becomes excessive and affect gameplay.
So in-game, a little bit of shimmering is inevitable if you use this cheat, but that is only because of the sharper texture. That is why everyone will have to find a balance between excess shimmer/stars detail.
Real stars, when viewed in space, I believe, do not flicker at all (with normal naked eye), so to those who are yelling "stars don't flicker" I agree.
But this is a game. We have Nebulas as bright as earth's atmosphere, and we have ships that travel faster than light. Why can't we have shimmering stars to add to the "atmosphere"? :)
